Everybody wants Easter. Who doesn t desire new life and a clean start? It s also easy to think of Palm Sunday when we celebrate Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem as a prelude to Easter feasting. Palm Sunday is fun and joyous. It s a day that we can all get behind. Yet Palm Sunday carries with it a dark shadow. When Jesus came into Jerusalem, he let people welcome him as ir king. This is why he rode in on a donkey and let people wave palm fronds as y welcomed him. He was selfconsciously entering city to begin his reign as king. But as we read furr in story, we see that joy of Palm Sunday quickly fades. The corrupt religious leaders finally succeed in having Jesus eliminated. Pilate, selfserving Roman governor takes route of complicit expediency and carries out execution of Jesus one who was clearly innocent. And, perhaps worst of all, disciples of Jesus all stumble and fall away from him at his most desperate hour. In or words, to follow biblical story and agenda that Jesus had, Palm Sunday led straight to crucifixion. Many of us would like to skip over somber sides of Holy Week. We don t want to be troubled with dark overtones of Palm Sunday, and let s not even get started with Maundy Thursday or Good Friday. The temptation is to go straight from palm waving to celebrating resurrection. 3 REFLECTION QUOTES The life Jesus has on or side of his death is life that comes from God. It is entirely gift. Trust in that promised gift, creation of possibility of our trusting in that promised gift, is what happens as Jesus yields himself without consolation into unknowing, silence and death. Salvation means learning to do that; learning to live, not by clinging onto our lives, our possessions, our reputations, but by entrusting ourselves to this promise and grace, in a continuous and everdeepening movement of giving ourselves over in prayer and listening obedience. This week we are invited to be with Jesus in his passion, to enter with our own lives into this dynamic of being handed over, of undergoing God. For our sake, Jesus yielded himself to loneliness of disgrace, shame, powerlessness, abandonment so that we might be set free from ways we deal death to ourselves and each or, and receive fullness of our life in God. In and through his passion is, paradoxically, his and our deepest liberation and life. Let us n go with him to Jerusalem; let us be with him along way. Sarah Bachelard Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Jesus, in John 12:24 I simply want to tell you that re are some men in this world who were born to do our unpleasant jobs for us. Your far is one of m. Plain text is read by one of worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout se pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in lobby to engage children in elements of our worship service. Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gared here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Wher we realize it or not, he is one calling us to himself today and every day. 1 CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 118:26; Zechariah 9:9 (NIV) Blessed is he who comes in name of Lord. From house of Lord we bless you. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, foal of a donkey. Blessed is he who comes in name of Lord. From house of Lord we bless you. Standing

Carine Winkworth LECTIO SACRA Philippians 2:111 Seated So if re is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of same mind, having same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count ors more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to interests of ors. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking form of a servant, being born in likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him name that is above every name, so that at name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to glory of God Far. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thousands of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. This is Word of Lord. Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Fairest Lord Jesus Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. Alton H. Howard and Joseph August Seiss 1993 Alton H. Howard 2

6 Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God and each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. CONFESSION OF SIN The Worship Sourcebook O Lord, who on this day entered rebellious city that later rejected you, we confess that our wills are as rebellious as Jerusalem s, that our faith is often more show than substance, that our hearts are in need of cleansing. Have mercy on us, Son of David, Savior of our lives. Help us to lay at your feet all that we have and all that we are, trusting you to forgive what is sinful, to heal what is broken, to welcome our praises, and to receive us as your own. Standing (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Psalm 118:45, 14, 17 Let those who fear Lord say, His steadfast love endures forever. Out of my distress I called on Lord; Lord answered me and set me free. The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. Glad songs of salvation are in tents of righteous: The right hand of Lord does valiantly, right hand of Lord exalts, right hand of Lord does valiantly! I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount deeds of Lord. May peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 8 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 118:12, 1929 Praying through Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, re will be pauses for reflection. Oh give thanks to Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Let Israel say, His steadfast love endures forever. Open to me gates of righteousness, that I may enter through m and give thanks to Lord. This is gate of Lord; righteous shall enter through it. I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. The stone that builders rejected has become cornerstone. This is Lord's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is day that Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us success! Blessed is he who comes in name of Lord! We bless you from house of Lord. The Lord is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us. Bind festal sacrifice with cords, up to horns of altar! You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you. Oh give thanks to Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! 5

19 SERMON TEXT Matw 27:131 [1] When morning came, all chief priests and elders of people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. [2] And y bound him and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate governor. [3] Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back thirty pieces of silver to chief priests and elders, [4] saying, I have sinned by betraying innocent blood. They said, What is that to us? See to it yourself. [5] And throwing down pieces of silver into temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself. [6] But chief priests, taking pieces of silver, said, It is not lawful to put m into treasury, since it is blood money. [7] So y took counsel and bought with m potter's field as a burial place for strangers. [8] Therefore that field has been called Field of Blood to this day. [9] Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by prophet Jeremiah, saying, And y took thirty pieces of silver, price of him on whom a price had been set by some of sons of Israel, [10] and y gave m for potter's field, as Lord directed me. [24] So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rar that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before crowd, saying, I am innocent of this man's blood; see to it yourselves. [25] And all people answered, His blood be on us and on our children! [26] Then he released for m Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified. [27] Then soldiers of governor took Jesus into governor's headquarters, and y gared whole battalion before him. [28] And y stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, [29] and twisting toger a crown of thorns, y put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, y mocked him, saying, Hail, King of Jews! [30] And y spit on him and took reed and struck him on head. [31] And when y had mocked him, y stripped him of robe and put his own clos on him and led him away to crucify him. [11] Now Jesus stood before governor, and governor asked him, Are you King of Jews? Jesus said, You have said so. [12] But when he was accused by chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. [13] Then Pilate said to him, Do you not hear how many things y testify against you? [14] But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that governor was greatly amazed. [15] Now at feast governor was accustomed to release for crowd any one prisoner whom y wanted. [16] And y had n a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. [17] So when y had gared, Pilate said to m, Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ? [18] For he knew that it was out of envy that y had delivered him up. [19] Besides, while he was sitting on judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream. [20] Now chief priests and elders persuaded crowd to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. [21] The governor again said to m, Which of two do you want me to release for you? And y said, Barabbas.
