1 Now to gate of my Jerusalem, The seething holy city of my heart, The saviour comes. But will I welcome him? Oh crowds of easy feelings make a start; They raise ir hands, get caught up in singing, And think battle won. Too soon y ll find The challenge, reversal he is bringing Changes ir tune. I know what lies behind The surface flourish that so quickly fades; Selfinterest, and fearful guardedness, The hardness of heart, its barricades, And at core, dreadful emptiness Of a perverted temple. Jesus come Break my resistance and make me your home. Palm Sunday, from Sounding Seasons Malcolm Guite, CanterburyPress 2012 Palm Sunday

People thought he had come to overthrow Romans, but...no...he had come to change THEM... and that led to things turning bad. Garrison Keillor Palm Sunday is beginning of Holy Week, seven days of Church calendar that culminate on Easter Sunday. It commemorates Jesus entry into Jerusalem during last week of his life (see Luke 19:2948). When Jesus came into Jerusalem, people lined streets waving palm branches and shouting Blessed is King who comes in name of Lord. By ir actions, y were saying, Jesus, you are great rescuer we have been longing for. You are great king who is going to make everything all right. Jesus agreed with m. Jesus actions during his entry into Jerusalem indicate that he did, in fact, consider himself to be great King over all creation. By receiving praise of people, was basically saying, Yes, I am that King. I am One whom God has sent to heal everything. But people were not expecting how this king would work his healing. They expected an impressive military victory or political coup. Instead, Jesus was crucified on a cross a week later. This is irony of King Jesus. He is King who heals us by being broken. He is king who brings us life by suffering death on our behalf. Come let us worship King! 3 REFLECTION QUOTES Not bristlebearded Igors bent under burlap sacks, not peasants kneedeep in ricepaddy muck, nor serfs whose quartermoon sickles make wheat fall in waves y don t get to eat. My friend Franciscan nun says we misread that word meek in Bible verse that blesses m. To understand meek (she says) picture a great stallion at full gallop in a meadow, who at his master s voice seizes up to a stunned but instant halt. So with strain of holding that great power in check, muscles along arched neck keep eddying, and only velvet ears prick forward, awaiting next order. Mary Karr, Who Meek Are Not When Jesus began teaching he made it clear that his new empire would be unlike any empire world had ever seen. It came on a donkey s back. Its imperial council was comprised of a handful of unemployed fishermen, a couple of IRS agents, a prostitute and some hangers on. Jesus demonstrated how to wield his imperial power by washing feet, telling stories and playing with kids. Jesus empire is based on absurd values that last should be first, losers are winners, and most influential in empire should clean toilets. Members of empire are instructed to love ir enemies, forgive ir friends, always give twice as much as people ask of m and never pursue power or position. Jesus insisted that those who are part of his empire shouldn t worry about finances, but simply trust God. The resources to run this empire were basins, towels, and leftover lunches. This empire also developed a reputation for constant partying almost always with wrong kind of people. Tom Sine, The New Conspirators

Plain text is read by one of worship service leaders PALM SUNDAY WELCOME PROCLAMATION OF THE TRIUMPHANT ENTRY Matw 21:111 Seated Standing The small symbols you will see throughout se pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy". Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gared here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Wher we realize it or not, he is one calling us to himself today and every day. Now when y drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to Mount of Olives, n Jesus sent two disciples, saying to m, Go into village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie m and bring m to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, The Lord needs m, and he will send m at once. This took place to fulfill what was spoken by prophet, saying, Say to daughter of Zion, Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, foal of a beast of burden. The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed m. They brought donkey and colt and put on m ir cloaks, and he sat on m. Most of crowd spread ir cloaks on road, and ors cut branches from trees and spread m on road. And crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, Hosanna to Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in name of Lord! Hosanna in highest! And when he entered Jerusalem, whole city was stirred up, saying, Who is this? And crowds said, This is prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee. 1

It has been practice of church for thousands of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. So if re is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of same mind, having same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count ors more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to interests of ors. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking form of a servant, being born in likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to point of death, even death on a cross.therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him name that is above every name, so that at name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to glory of God Far. 3 This is Word of Lord Thanks be to God!

7 INTERLUDE CONFESSION OF SIN From The Worship Sourcebook Standing O Lord, who on this day entered rebellious city that later rejected you, we confess that our wills are as rebellious as Jerusalem s, that our faith is often more show than substance, that our hearts are in need of cleansing. Have mercy on us, Son of David, Savior of our lives. Help us to lay at your feet all that we have and all that we are, trusting you to forgive what is sinful, to heal what is broken, to welcome our praises, and to receive us as your own. Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God and each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Psalm 118:45, 14, 17 Let those who fear Lord say, His steadfast love endures forever. Out of my distress I called on Lord; Lord answered me and set me free. The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. Glad songs of salvation are in tents of righteous: The right hand of Lord does valiantly, right hand of Lord exalts, right hand of Lord does valiantly! I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount deeds of Lord. May peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 4

Oh give thanks to Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Let Israel say, His steadfast love endures forever. Open to me gates of righteousness, that I may enter through m and give thanks to Lord. This is gate of Lord; righteous shall enter through it. I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. 5 (Continued on next page).

12 THE SACRAMENT OF COMMUNION Seated Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are source of all blessing in this life and life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen. Allergenfree communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at center of communion table. To partake, please dip in wine cup on table, n proceed through line. The Sursum Corda (Latin: Lift up your hearts ) is an opening dialogue in Eucharistic liturgy of Christian Church and dates back (at least) to third century. This text encourages church to come with thankfulness and joy to Lord s table. Communion, also called Lord s Supper or Eucharist, is family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge ir sins against God and ir neighbors and confess ir need for grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, church. If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at front of sanctuary to pray with you. The Sursum Corda The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift m up to Lord. Let us give thanks to Lord our God. It is meet and right to do so. It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Far Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim glory of your Name: Jess Alldredge 2019 The Sanctus (Latin: Holy ) is a Christian hymn text, typically sung in response to The Sursum Corda. It is an invitation to join voices of church with heavenly host, who are continually proclaiming Far s glory (Isaiah 6:13; Matw 21:9). 19 SERMON TEXT Luke 19:2840 [28] And when he had said se things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. [29] When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of disciples, [30] saying, Go into village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. [31] If anyone asks you, Why are you untying it? you shall say this: The Lord has need of it. [32] So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told m. [33] And as y were untying colt, its owners said to m, Why are you untying colt? [34] And y said, The Lord has need of it. [35] And y brought it to Jesus, and throwing ir cloaks on colt, y set Jesus on it. [36] And as he rode along, y spread ir cloaks on road.
