1 ORDER OF WORSHIP Sunday, 2 February, 10:30 am

2 WINTER 2014 COLOSSIANS: WALKING IN CHRIST "Redeeming love has been my theme and shall be till I die." - William Cowper In the Christian life, belonging precedes transformation. To be a Christian means that God loves us in spite of our sins, weaknesses, and failures. We don't have to change ourselves to become acceptable to God. Through Christ, we are loved, cherished, and accepted right now. This is one of the sweetest and most precious things about God. He loves us in the midst of our mess. But it is precisely our current experience of our sins, wounds, and incompleteness that makes the Christian life so challenging. When he was on the cross, Jesus said, "It is finished." But his work in our lives is far from finished. We still sin. We still grieve. We still suffer loss. We are still not the people we desire to be. Our experiential incompleteness makes us incredibly vulnerable to all kinds of spiritual pathologies. We can despair and give up on the Christian life altogether either in an instant change of heart or a slow, meandering drift. Or, we can chase one spiritual fad after another, in a desperate quest for a spiritual novelty or experience that will fill up what is lacking. How can we steer clear of these dangers? How do we finish the race we have started? This is where Paul's letter to the Colossians is a great gift. Paul wrote the letter to a church a lot like ours young and well-established in the gospel, yet far from complete. And, in their journey towards maturity, Paul urges them that the way to finish the path of Christian discipleship is the same way they started: through faith in Christ. For the Colossians, and for us, faith in Christ is the way forward. Faith in Christ is the way home. Let us worship! WORSHIP SERVICE 10:30am Sundays. 5 GRACE CHURCH SEATTLE SUNDAY, 2 FEBRUARY 2014 THE FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY S T A N D I N G CALL TO WORSHIP Adapted from Psalm 100 Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. Text in bold italics is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders. Let us make a joyful noise to the Lord! Let us go into his presence with praise and thanksgiving! Oh! Great Is Our God! 2009 Brian Eichelberger/E on the Eye Chart (BMI) Oh! Great is our God! So we should worship greatly! No song is too loud! No orchestra too stately To hail the majesty of our King So lift your voices loud as we sing Oh! Great is our God! So let our songs be endless! So awesome his ways, how could we comprehend them? So we will make it knownn to our kids And we will sing about the gracious gifts you give Refrain: We will sing your praise and pour forth your fame We will bless your name Let ev ry one give thanks, because our God is great! Oh! Great is our God! And we cannot contain it! We sing from our souls, affected by his greatness His mercy covers all thatt heʼs made Showing his glory and his grace Refrain (3x) O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 1

6 Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. CONFESSION OF SIN Our gracious Shepherd and our God, we ask for mercy. You have called us to abide in you and to follow you with faith and hope wherever you lead us. But we have turned aside from your way, and foolishly trusted ourselves. You have given us light and life by your word and Spirit so that we might walk with you faithfully and boldly. But our faith has withered when we faced trouble, and our trust has eroded in the midst of trial. Our gracious Shepherd and our God, remind us that we are your children, and fill us with your Spirit so that our lives might always be faithful and fruitful. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Isaiah 53:5-6 Jesus was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray. Each of us has turned to our own way; but the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Amen. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 2

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Questions from The Book of Church Order, 56-5 Cyrus Frierson, Phoebe Frierson, Theodore Alvin Ifland, Sophia Anna Richter 1. Do you acknowledge your child s need of the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ, and the renewing grace of the Holy Spirit? 2. Do you claim God s covenant promises in their behalf, and do you look in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ for their salvation, as you do for your own? 3. Do you now unreservedly dedicate your child to God, and promise, in humble reliance upon divine grace, that you will endeavor to set before them a godly example, that you will pray with and for them, that you will teach them the doctrines of our holy religion, and that you will strive, by all the means of God s appointment, to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord? From Matthew 28:19; Genesis 17:7; Acts 16:31 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household. To the congregation: Do you as a congregation undertake the responsibility of assisting in the Christian nurture of these children? O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 3

8 Adapted from the Church of Scotland PROMISE TO THE CHILD Baptismal Liturgy For you, Cyrus, Phoebe, Theodore, and Sophia, Jesus Christ came into the world. For you he lived and showed God s love. For you he suffered the darkness of Calvary and cried at the last, It is finished. For you he triumphed over death and rose to new life. For you he reigns at God s right hand. All this he did for you, though you do not know it yet. S T A N D I N G Congregational Prayer (adapted from The Book of Common Prayer, 1928) Lord Jesus Christ, who embraces children with the arms of mercy and makes them living members of your Church, give Cyrus, Phoebe, Theodore, and Sophia grace to stand fast in your faith, to obey your word, and to abide in your love. Being made strong by your Holy Spirit, may they resist temptation and overcome evil, and rejoice in the life that now is, and dwell with you in the life that is to come; through your merits, O merciful Savior, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, world without end. Amen. S I T, S T A N D, O R K N E E L Each week, we pray for the people around us and in the world as a way to serve them according to God s will. You are welcome to sit, stand, or kneel as we pray. If you have children, please feel free to use this time to teach them to pray. PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE God of glory, fill this congregation and this city with the power of Christ s resurrection. May we, your people, be a living demonstration of the new life you offer in Christ. We pray for this congregation. That we would reflect your grace, compassion, and justice. (Pray silently for the mission of Grace Seattle and other churches.) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for our friends who do not yet know you That you would draw them to your fountain of life. (Pray silently for those who need a relationship with God.) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for the City of Seattle. Unleash your redemptive power and restore what is broken. (Pray silently for God to pour out His life upon our city.) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. (Continued on page 5.) O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 4

9 We pray for the world. Pour out your new life everywhere it is needed. (Pray silently for the world.) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. S T A N D I N G Let us join together in praying as Jesus taught us to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. 10 Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. The Heidelberg Catechism is the best known of the Reformed confessions. It was written in Heidelberg, Germany in 1563 by two young ministers. AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Heidelberg Catechism #1 Q: What is your only comfort in life and in death? A: That I am not my own, but belong with body and soul, both in life and in death, to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from all the power of the devil. He also preserves me in such a way that without the will of my heavenly Father, not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, all things must work together for my salvation. Therefore, by his Holy Spirit he also assures me of eternal life S T A N D I N G and makes me heartily willing and ready from now on to live for him. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 6

Contact: Heidi Schuler (nihaoheidi@gmail.com), Campus Ministry Staff, China Outreach Ministries for more information or to receive updates on other ways to show hospitality to Chinese students at UW Website: chinattle.blogspot.com Sponsor an Akha child: The Akha Youth Development Center provides housing and education to help young people escape the sex and drug trades in Thailand. You can support a child for $40/month. Contact: Michael Subracko (michael@graceseattle.org) 15

20 S E R M O N T E X T [7] Tychicus will tell you all about my activities. He is a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord. [8] I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts, [9] and with him Onesimus, our faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you of everything that has taken place here. [10] Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you, and Mark the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you have received instructions if he comes to you, welcome him), [11] and Jesus who is called Justus. These are the only men of the circumcision among my fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me. [12] Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you, always struggling on your behalf in his prayers, that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God. [13] For I bear him witness that he has worked hard for you and for those in Laodicea and in Hierapolis. [14] Luke the beloved physician greets you, as does Demas. [15] Give my greetings to the brothers at Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church in her house. [16] And when this letter has been read among you, have it also read in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you also read the letter from Laodicea. [17] And say to Archippus, See that you fulfill the ministry that you have received in the Lord. [18] I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Remember my chains. Grace be with you.
