1 ADVENT WEEK 1 RDER F WRSHIP Sunday, November 30, :00 am 11:30 am graceseattle.org

2 ADVENT 2014 IMMANUEL: GD WITH US Behold, the virgin shall conceive bear a son, they shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us). Matthew 1:2023 An angel uttered these profound words to Joseph, the man engaged to Mary, who became the mother of Jesus. Joseph was a runofthemill Jewish tradesman, who had just gotten engaged to Mary, a young woman probably early in her teenage years. What is striking about them as a couple is how incredibly ordinary they were. They weren t rich. They weren t powerful. They weren t even necessarily very religious. However, it is to this couple that Jesus came. That is the marvel of God s grace. In Jesus Christ, God has come to dwell with us in the midst of our very ordinary lives. During this Advent Christmas season, we will be considering the many ways in which God dwells with his people. God is with us; working in us among us in the midst of our ordinary, daytoday lives. Yet, we are often blind to his presence. This will be a great opportunity to pause reorient our vision to the reality of God s presence. Let us worship! 3 FR REFLECTIN Almost everyone can agree that one of the big differences between us our ancestors of five hundred years ago is that they lived in an enchanted world, we do not; at the very least, we live in a much less enchanted world. We might think of this as our having lost a number of beliefs the practices which they made possible. But more, the enchanted world was one in which these forces could cross a porous boundary shape our lives, psychic physical. ne of the big differences between us them is that we live with a much firmer sense of the boundary between self other. We are buffered selves. We have changed. Charles Taylor, A Secular Age You would think that believing that Jesus is God among us would be the hardest thing. It is not. It turns out that the hardest thing is to believe that God's work this dazzling creation, this astonishing salvation, this cascade of blessings is all being worked out in under the conditions of our humanity: at picnics around dinner tables, in conversations while walking along roads, in puzzled questions homely stories, with blind beggars suppurating lepers, at weddings funerals. Everything that Jesus does says takes place within the limits conditions of our humanity. No fireworks. No special effects. Yes, there are miracles, plenty of them. But because for the most part they are so much a part of the fabric of everyday life, very few notice. The miraculousness of miracle is obscured by the familiarity of the setting, the ordinariness of the people involved. Eugene Peterson, Christ Plays in Ten Thous Places Being rather than knowing requires showing up letting ourselves be seen. It requires us to dare greatly, to be vulnerable. Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures all ocean depths, lightning hail, snow clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding, you mountains all hills, fruit trees all cedars, wild animals all cattle, small creatures flying birds, kings of the earth all nations, you princes all rulers on earth, young men women, old men children. Christians adopted the practice of the lighting of cles during Advent in the Middle Ages. Another cle is lit during each of the four Sundays of Advent, signifying hope, love, joy, peace. Please silence all mobile phones electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. Text in bold italics is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders. Let us praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth the heavens. Praise the Lord! 7 LECTI SACRA John 1:918 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh dwelt among us, we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace truth. (John bore witness about him, cried out, This was he of whom I said, He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me. ) For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thouss of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. The word of the Lord! Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection worship. S T A N D I N G CNFESSIN F SIN Adapted from Psalm 90:12, 104:1 Bless the Lord, my soul. h LRD my God, you are very great. Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you formed the earth the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy celebrates its abundance in Christ. We confess that our eyes are often more engaged in looking after our own glory than worshipping yours. We admit that we have pined for further blessing instead of gratefully delighting in you pour out for us daily. the blessings We recognize that we incline our ears to many voices yet fail to hear where you are speaking in the ordinary lives we lead. Bless the Lord, my soul. h LRD my God, you are very great. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING F GRACE Adapted from 2 Corinthians 5 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new has come! In Christ, we have been made new creations! 9 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 19:16, 14 The heavens declare the glory of God, the sky above proclaims his hiwork. Day to day pours out speech, night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, its circuit to the end of them, there is nothing hidden from its heat. Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. Let the words of my mouth the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, LRD, my rock my redeemer. ANTIPHN Adapted from Psalm 42, J. 20 S E R M N T E X T [26] Then God said, Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea the birds in the sky, over the livestock all the wild animals,[a] over all the creatures that move along the ground. [27] So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male female he created them. [28] God blessed them said to them, Be fruitful increase in number; fill the earth subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea the birds in the sky over every living creature that moves on the ground. [29] Then God said, I give you every seedbearing plant on the face of the whole earth every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. [30] And to all the beasts of the earth all the birds in the sky all the creatures that move along the ground everything that has the breath of life in it I give every green plant for food. And it was so. [31] God saw all that he had made, it was very good. And there was evening, there was morning the sixth day. Genesis 1:2631 (NIV) [18] Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. [19] And her husb Joseph, being a just man unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. [20] But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. [21] She will bear a son, you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. [22] All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: [23] Behold, the virgin shall conceive bear a son, they shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us). [24] When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commed him: he took his wife, [25] but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. Matthew 1:1825 [14] And the Word became flesh dwelt among us, we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace truth.
