1 Lord, who throughout these forty days for us did fast and pray, teach us with you to mourn our sins and close by you to stay. As you with Satan did contend, and did the victory win, O give us strength in you to fight, in you to conquer sin. As you did hunger and did thirst, so teach us, gracious Lord, to die to self, and so to live by your most holy Word. And through these days of penitence, and through your Passiontide, forevermore, in life and death, O Lord, with us a bide. Abide with us, that through this life of doubts and hope and pain, an Easter of unending joy we may at last attain! Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days Claudia Frances Hernaman (1873) Lent

Jonathan Chaplin, Living with Integrity in a Splintered World Most of us know that we should make some changes to our lives, but we often never get around to them. Many of us would like to eat better, exercise (at least a little), pray more, and read Scripture more. But somehow these things all seem to get pushed to the back burner so we can focus our attention and energy on what has been called the tyranny of the urgent. This is the gift of the season of Lent, the 40day period of time leading up to the 7week Easter Season that begins on Easter Sunday. The church, in its wisdom, knows how we can tend to get offtrack over the course of a year. So, every spring, we are invited to enter into the disciplines of the Lenten season so that we might get back on course (for disciplines, think intentional practices). This means that Lent is not a time to pretend like we re spiritual superstars. Truth be told, when we begin to engage or, reengage in spiritual disciplines like fasting, morning and evening prayer, tithing, and corporate worship, we quickly begin to see how much opposition we have in our own hearts towards doing the very things that will help us grow as followers of Christ. In other words, we actually need the reboot opportunity that Lent offers every year precisely because we re not spiritual superstars. Also, it s important to know that the appropriate posture to take towards these disciplines is progress and growth, not shame and guilt. We re not doing them so that we can persuade God that he can finally accept us as his children. Instead, we pick up these practices with the hopes that God will bless us with new growth and new experiences of his mercy and goodness. So, we invite you to join the leaders at Grace and enter into Lent this year. We have put together a brief guide (available at the Welcome Center) that we prayerfully hope will help you make progress in your life with God. Each week has a Scriptural and thematic focus that will go along with Sunday s sermon text. May God bless you over the upcoming weeks. Let us worship! 4 Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy". Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself today and every day. THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 95 Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Seated Standing Today, if only we would hear his voice, Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness, where your ancestors tested me; they tried me, though they had seen what I did. So I declared on oath in my anger, They shall never enter my rest. 1

Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. Seated Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. (Continued on the next page.) 2
6 Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you, because of the Lord your God, and of the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. This is the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE 3
7 CONFESSION OF SIN Psalm 95 & 130 Out of the depths we cry to you, O Lord! O Lord, hear our voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of our pleas for mercy! If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared. Standing Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. Deliver us from our competing affections! Father, save us from every temptation! O Lord, have mercy! Soften our hard hearts to heed your instruction! Free us from our many idols! Christ, have mercy! Gracious Father, hear our silent prayers for mercy and grace! Amen. 8 RECEIVING OF GRACE Psalm 130:7; 1 Cor 10:12 O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities. In our many sins and diverse temptations, we are not left to ourselves. Family, say with me these words of Grace and Faithful Love in Christ: No temptation has overtaken us that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let us be tempted beyond our ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that we may be able to endure it. This is the Gospel! Amen! Praise the Lord! May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 9 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 63 O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me. But those who seek to destroy my life shall go down into the depths of the earth; they shall be given over to the power of the sword; they shall be a portion for jackals. But the king shall rejoice in God; all who swear by him shall exult, for the mouths of liars will be stopped. 6

In response to his grace, we also extend that grace to one another with a handshake or a hug. Traditionally, Christians have greeted one another during this time in the service with the phrase, "May the peace of Christ be with you" and receive back the greeting "And also with you." Traditional Celtic Hymn 8th Century Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen. GOSPEL LESSON Written For Our Instruction 1 Corinthians 10:113 Rev. Jason Davison Sermons can be streamed and downloaded at graceseattle.org/resources. INTERLUDE Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. 8

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Hebrews 11 Standing, Seated, or Kneeling As Pilgrims making our way home, what do we believe about our way of faith? We believe faith is the assurance of things hoped for, and the conviction of things not seen. Then as Sojourners, our prayer is that we live deeper lives of faith, for without faith in God, it is impossible to please him. God increase our faith and trust in you! Yes, Father, hear our prayer! Prayer, that like Abel, we may tithe acceptably to you. Yes, Father, hear our prayer! Prayer, that like Enoch, we may walk with you in every detail of our lives. Yes, Father, hear our prayer! Prayer, that like Noah, we may esteem your Word over the words of everyone else. Yes, Father, hear our prayer! Prayer, that like Sarah, we might yield our very bodies to the lifegiving promises of God. Yes, Father, hear our prayer! Prayer, that like Abraham, we might look and labor for that Distant City, our Home. Yes, Lord, hear our prayer! 9 God, we long for our true Home. May we use this season of Lent to fast with our hearts, priorities and labors. We thank you for this road of faith, believing that you are not ashamed to be called our God, for you have prepared for us a heavenly city. Amen.

Standing Sandra McCracken 2016 Drink Your Tea Music THE SACRAMENT OF COMMUNION Seated Communion, also called the Lord s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church. If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you. The Sursum Corda The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is meet and right to do so. It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen. Allergenfree communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then proceed through the line. The Sursum Corda (Latin: Lift up your hearts ) is an opening dialogue in the Eucharistic liturgy of the Christian Church and dates back (at least) to the third century. This text encourages the church to come with thankfulness and joy to the Lord s table. 10
14 Jess Alldredge 2018 Grace Church Seattle The Sanctus (Latin: Holy ) is a Christian hymn text, typically sung in response to The Sursum Corda. The course does not obligate you to become a member, but is necessary for membership, and it is where you will learn about the process of becoming a member. The next class will be offered on April You can contact our Administrator, Danielle Taniguchi at danielle@gracesesattle.org, to register to attend. Grief and Loss Support Group DATE CHANGE: April 14th 9:0010:20 AM Classroom #218 (down the hallway to the left of the sanctuary) This ministry provides a time and space to share our grief and loss with one another, so that we can be consoled in knowing that we are not alone in our suffering. If you are experiencing grief over the death of a loved one, infertility, the loss of health, difficult family dynamics, the loss of a job, or another loss, join us. There is no grief or loss too big or too small. The participants simply listen to, and pray for, each person that shares. A moderator describes the group guidelines at the start of each meeting. We will meet on the second Sunday of the month in April from 9:00 to 10:20 am; please come as often or as seldom as you need. If you have questions please contact Lisa Behringer at cozycottage@mac.com. Men's Retreat Returns to Rainbow Lodge May 3rd5th While the weekend theme will be Doubt, Confidence, & Standing Taller, there can be no mistaking the glory of waking up in a lodge surrounded by Douglas Firs at the base of Mt. Si. You'll be in good company this is a great way to connect with other men, whether you have recently visited Grace or you've attended for years. Save the date for May 35 and register by going to and selecting the registration link from the announcement on the home page. Please Orion Ifland for more information at orion@ifland.net. Save the Date: All Church Retreat 2019 September 2729th Warm Beach Camp & Conference Center Save the date! We will be having a churchwide retreat at the Warm Beach Camp in Stanwood. This is a great time to build existing relationships and form new ones. For more information about the retreat, please Danielle at danielle@graceseattle.org. More details to follow in early
19 SERMON TEXT 1 Corinthians 10:113 [1] For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, [2] and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, [3] and all ate the same spiritual food, [4] and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. [5] Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. [6] Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did. [7] Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play. [8] We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twentythree thousand fell in a single day. [9] We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, [10] nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. [11] Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. [12] Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. [13] No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 16
