Advent Week 2 Order of Worship
Worship Service Sundays 1300 E Aloha St First Service 9:00 AM Second Service 11:30 AM Nursery 6 months2 years Grace Kids 2s: Room 117 3s: Fellowship Hall (FH) 5 years: Room years: Room 103 (first service sermon time) Christian Formation 10:30 AM Kindergarten: Room 103 1st2nd grade: FH 3rdth grade: Room 110 5th6th grade: Room 217 Youth: Room 102 Adult: Sanctuary Advent 2015 God is light, in him is no darkness at all. I John 1:5 In elementary school, we learn that ordinary light can be split up into many colors (seven, to be exact). All of se colors combine wonderfully to give us full spectrum light we experience each day in rays of sun. Full spectrum light is full, complex, rich. It brings life flourishing everywhere it travels. Take it away, world would eventually be enshrouded in death. Each year as fall turns into winter days get progressively shorter, many of us begin to experience toll that darkness takes upon us. Our mood sinks we can find it harder to go about daily tasks of life. We begin to long for return of healing light of sun. Certain types of artificial light try to mimic what sun can do, but y are, in end, cheap garish substitutes for real thing. The biblical narrative tells a story of a world that was enveloped in darkness a darkness of sin, prideful autonomy, foolish efforts to create our own light. And, into this great darkness, God true Light has come. Jesus is Light that has come into our darkness. His light is full, complex rich. He brings life flourishing everywhere he is received. Let us worship!
FOR REFLECTION For shame is specific discomfort produced by sense of being looked at, avoidance of sight of ors is reflex it produces. Guilt is different; re is reflex to avoid discovery. As long as no one knows what you have done, you are safe; or your conscience will press you to confess it accept punishment. Under shame, what must be covered up is not your deed, but yourself. It is a more primitive emotion than guilt, as inescapable as possession of a body, first object of shame. Unless orwise noted, all Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Stard Version (ESV ), copyright 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. Used by permission. All rights reserved. Stanley Havell, quoted in First Things magazine This is midnight radio one As music in moonlit starry night Beneath this purple haze our common dark The heavens obscure, starlight travels into infinity Yet we only see it when night is black. This is question brors sisters fear; What is color of soul? Said Buddha, Jesus, Plato, poets of Old, That evening is color of soul. We hide ourselves in artificial light We think ourselves safe out of sight. You have a million dollars still Enough money to build a city on every hill. Work hard bror, Love alone will pay your bill. Look good sister, Love alone will pay your bill. Die rich, Love alone will pay your bill And evening is still color of soul. Big Head Todd Monsters, Groove Thing He that is down needs fear no fall; He that is low, no pride; He that is humble ever shall Have God to be his guide. I am content with what I have, Little be it, or much: And, Lord, contentment still I crave, Because thou savest such. Fullness to such a burden is That go on pilgrimage; Here little, hereafter bliss, Is best from age to age. John Bunyan, Pilgrim's Progress
SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT CALL TO WORSHIP Sting Please silence all mobile phones electronic devices for duration of worship service. Text in bold is read toger by entire congregation. 5 LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE Christians adopted practice of lighting of cles during Advent in Middle Ages. Anor cle is lit during each of four Sundays of Advent, signifying hope, love, joy, peace. LECTIO SACRA Genesis 3:113 Now serpent was more crafty than any or beast of field that LORD God had made. He said to woman, Did God actually say, You shall not eat of any tree in garden? And woman said to serpent, We may eat of fruit of trees in garden, but God said, You shall not eat of fruit of tree that is in midst of garden, neir shall you touch it, lest you die. But serpent said to woman, You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, you will be like God, knowing good evil. So when woman saw that tree was good for food, that it was a delight to eyes, that tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit ate, she also gave some to her husb who was with her, he ate. Then eyes of both were opened, y knew that y were naked. And y sewed fig leaves toger made mselves loincloths. And y heard sound of LORD God walking in garden in cool of day, man his wife hid mselves from presence of LORD God among trees of garden. But LORD God called to man said to him, Where are you? And he said, I heard sound of you in garden, I was afraid, because I was naked, I hid myself. He said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of tree of which I commed you not to eat? The man said, The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of tree, I ate. Then LORD God said to woman, What is this that you have done? The woman said, The serpent deceived me, I ate. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thouss of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. The word of Lord! Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection worship. 2
Sting CONFESSION OF SIN Psalm 51:13, 56, 1011 Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy celebrates its abundance in Christ. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, my sin is ever before me. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, in sin did my mor conceive me. Behold, you delight in truth in inward being, you teach me wisdom in secret heart. Create in me a clean heart, O God, renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, take not your Holy Spirit from me (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Psalm 103:10, 131 God does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. As a far shows compassion to his children, so Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame, remembers that we are dust. May peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 3

Zechariah pronounced this blessing upon birth of his son, prophet John Baptist. In some traditions, this song is referred to as Benedictus, from first words Blessed be in Latin versions of Bible. Blessed be Lord God of Israel, for he has visited redeemed his people has raised up a horn of salvation for us in house of his servant David, as he spoke by mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we should be saved from our enemies from h of all who hate us. The Lord has visited us to show mercy promised to our fars mors to remember his holy covenant, oath that he swore to our far Abraham, to grant us that we, being delivered from h of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness righteousness before him all our days. (continued)
And John was a prophet of Most High; called to go before Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in forgiveness of our sins, because of tender mercy of our God, whereby sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness in shadow of death, to guide our feet into way of peace. The song text below is given for reflection.
