2 WORSHIP SCHEDULE 1300 E Aloha St Good Friday Service 7:00 PM Nursery 6 months 3 years Good Friday 2017 The righteousness of the saints in this world consists more in the forgiveness of sins than in the perfection of virtues. St. Augustine Palm Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week, the seven days of the Church calendar that culminate on Easter Sunday. During Holy Week, the Church reenters the last week of Jesus life. Palm Sunday is fun. We get to wave palm fronds and shout with joy. Palm Sunday is a day that Americans can all get behind. But if we read the gospels closely, we discover that Palm Sunday brings with it a dark battle. On Palm Sunday, Jesus came into Jerusalem with one goal in mind: to suffer and die for people he loves very dearly. Nowhere do we see his suffering so acutely as on Good Friday. On Good Friday, we commemorate the day that Jesus was betrayed and abandoned by his friends, was tortured and beaten by the Roman authorities, and was crucified on a cross, having his pleas for mercy fall on the Father s deaf ears. Good Friday is stark and ruthless. To catch a small glimpse of that, each year our Good Friday service ends in darkness and silence. At the same time, Good Friday, is also a profound and gracious gift from God to us. For, if we let the biblical story shape our imaginations, we will know that he died for us. In other words, he died with us in mind. Because this is true, Good Friday is a sobering event. It is, however, full of God s mercy and hope. Let us worship! But they were urgent, saying, He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee even to this place. Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, and said to them, You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. And after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him. Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, nothing deserving death has been done by him. I will therefore punish and release him. But they all cried out together, Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas a man who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection started in the city and for murder. Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus, but they kept shouting, Crucify, crucify him! A third time he said to them, Why? What evil has he done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death. I will therefore punish and release him. But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed. So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted. He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus over to their will. 15 Good Friday is a day to meditate especially on the Cross, where Jesus Christ gave his life for his people. It is the day in Holy Week set aside for sober reflection on our sins which cost him his life. In keeping with the sober theme of this event, the service will conclude in darkness and silence. Please observe complete silence in the sanctuary, narthex, and parking lot as you leave. 13
