The holiday itself is traditiony celebrated on 6th day of January commemorates revelation of Lord Jesus Christ to world. The season of Epiphany extends from January 6th until Ash Wednesday, beginning of Lenten season. Along with Christmas Easter, Epiphany is one of three oldest Christian festivals was celebrated as early as latter half of second century. One of major events associated with Epiphany season is wise men s (or, Magi's) visit to baby Jesus (Matw 2). The Magi were least likely people to recognize Jesus as Savior. They were astrologers who were immersed in an entirely different religion. In fact, according to Old Testament, wise men were individuals who led people astray from true God (Isaiah 47). But, noneless, Magi come to Bethlehem bow before Jesus. And, what do y find re? They do not find condemnation. Rar, y find a king who is gracious kind to m. They are received by this king ir faith has been celebrated throughout centuries. So what is Epiphany about? Epiphany is about discovering God of grace. The God who is not just present gracious to those who are near Him, but, who is also is present gracious to those who are far off. So, no matter where you are with God, Epiphany is a time to come near to him discover his grace. Let us worship! It is my duty," said he, "to distrust mine own ability, that I may have reliance on him that is stronger than." Paul Bunyan, The Pilgrim's Progress "Don't roads in life lead to you?" asks Mackenzie. 5 LECTIO SACRA Psalm 65:112 Seated Praise is due to you, O God, in Zion, to you sh vows be performed. O you who hear prayer, to you sh flesh come. When iniquities prevail against me, you atone for our transgressions. Blessed is one you choose bring near, to dwell in your courts! We sh be satisfied with goodness of your house, holiness of your temple! Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thouss of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by of God s word. By awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness, O God of our salvation, hope of ends of earth of farst seas; one who by his strength established mountains, being girded with might; who stills roaring of seas, roaring of ir waves, tumult of peoples, so that those who dwell at ends of earth are in awe at your signs. You make going out of morning evening to shout for joy. You visit earth water it; you greatly enrich it; river of God is full of water; you provide ir grain, for so you have prepared it. You water its furrows abundantly, settling its ridges, softening it with showers, blessing its growth. You crown year with your bounty; your wagon tracks overflow with abundance. The pastures of wilderness overflow, hills gird mselves with joy. This is Word of Lord Thanks be to God! 2

6 INTERLUDE CONFESSION OF SIN Isaiah 6:8; Luke 10:2 Sting Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy celebrates its abundance in Christ. Lord, you asked, "Who sh go for us?" And Lord, we answered, "Here we are, send us!" Jesus, you said, "The harvest is plentiful, laborers few." So we are to pray to you, Lord of Harvest, to send out laborers into fields. And yet, Far, we confess our prayerless days indifference to your coming Kingdom. We fear being sent out as sheep among wolves. We fear scarcity of your Way. We fear rejection involved in following You. Have mercy on us, O God! Grant us forgiveness. Empower us to pray, sow reap! Orient our hearts to burn for your Kingdom to come, may you send laborers out into fields of harvest. Amen. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Romans 13:1112; Psalm 37:23 Take heart, pilgrims, as we travel along our Way! Besides, you know that at this time that hour has come for each of us to wake from our sleep! For salvation is nearer to us now, n when we first believed. The night is gone The day is at h. Family, we don't need to fear on pilgrim way, for our Lord is patient with us on our way, because steps of righteous are ordered by God! This is Gospel! Helujah, Amen! 3

7 HYMN OF GOD S LOVE Amazing Grace Amazing grace! How sweet sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. Through many dangers, toils snares, I have already come; Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. John Newton, 1779 New Britain, 1831 (last stanza author unknown) Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 126 When we ve been re ten thous years, Bright shining as sun, We ve no less days to sing God s praise Than when we d first begun. When Lord restored fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, our tongue with shouts of joy; n y said among nations, The Lord has done great things for m. The Lord has done great things for us; we are glad. Praying through Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, re will be pauses for reflection. Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in Negeb! Those who sow in tears sh reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing seed for sowing, sh come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him. 4

19 SERMON TEXT Luke 10:116 [1] After this Lord appointed seventytwo ors sent m on ahead of him, two by two, into every town place where he himself was about to go. [2] And he said to m, The harvest is plentiful, but laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to Lord of harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. [3] Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in midst of wolves. [4] Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sals, greet no one on road. [5] Whatever house you enter, first say, Peace be to this house! [6] And if a son of peace is re, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. [7] And remain in same house, eating drinking what y provide, for laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. [8] Whenever you enter a town y receive you, eat what is set before you. [9] Heal sick in it say to m, The kingdom of God has come near to you. [10] But whenever you enter a town y do not receive you, go into its streets say, [11] Even dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Neverless know this, that kingdom of God has come near. [12] I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town. [13] Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre Sidon, y would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth ashes. [14] But it will be more bearable in judgment for Tyre Sidon than for you. [15] And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You sh be brought down to Hades. [16] The one who hears you hears me, one who rejects you rejects me, one who rejects me rejects him who sent me. 16
