1 ADVENT WEEK 2 ORDER OF WORSHIP Sunday, December 7, 201 9:00 am and 11:30 am graceseattle.org

2 ADVENT 201 IMMANUEL: GOD WITH US Behold, virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and y shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us). Matw 1:2023 An angel uttered se profound words to Joseph, man engaged to Mary, who became mor of Jesus. Joseph was a runofmill Jewish tradesman, who had just gotten engaged to Mary, a young woman probably early in her teenage years. What is striking about m as a couple is how incredibly ordinary y were. They weren t rich. They weren t powerful. They weren t even necessarily very religious. However, it is to this couple that Jesus came. That is marvel of God s grace. In Jesus Christ, God has come to dwell with us in midst of our very ordinary lives. During this Advent and Christmas season, we will be considering many ways in which God dwells with his people. God is with us; working in us and among us in midst of our ordinary, daytoday lives. Yet, we are often blind to his presence. This will be a great opportunity to pause and reorient our vision to reality of God s presence. Let us worship! 3 FOR REFLECTION Most of things we need to be most fully alive never come in busyness. They grow in rest. Mark Buchanan, The Holy Wild: Trusting in Character of God The God who made Sabbath is not a cranky schoolmaster, always forbidding, coercing obedience, and watching sniveling subjects slinking about in cowardly compliance. The Sabbath commandment comes from a kind, wise teacher who does not like to see us suffer. Let me make it easier for you, God says. Some things at first may seem expedient, or important, or profitable but in end, y will bring you suffering. If you work all week and forget to rest, you will become brittle and hard, and lose precious nourishment and joy. Forgetting Sabbath is like forgetting to unwrap most beautiful gift under tree This is not a lifestyle suggestion, but a commandment as important as not stealing, not murdering, or not lying. Remember to play and bless and make love and eat with those you love, and take comfort, easy and long, in this gift of sacred rest. Wayne Muller, Sabbath Pick up any glossy women s magazine from last few years and you ll see what I mean. The Sabbath has come back into fashion, even among most secular Americans, but Sabbath we now embrace is a curious one. Articles abound extolling virtues of treating yourself to a day of rest, a relaxing and leisurely visit to spa, an extralong bubble bath, and a glass of Chardonnay. Take a day off, magazines urge ir harried readers. Rest. There might be something to celebrate in this revival of Sabbath, but it seems to me that re are at least two flaws in reasoning. First is what we might call capitalism s justification for Sabbath rest: resting one day a week makes you more productive during or six. Or, as my far has often told me, I ll get more done working eleven months a year than twelve. And while that may be true, rest for sake of future productivity is at odds with spirit of Shabbat. We could call second problem with current Sabbath vogue fallacy of direct object. Whom is contemporary Sabbath designed to honor? Whom does it benefit? Why, bubblebath taker herself, of course! The Bible suggests something different. In observing Sabbath, one is giving a gift to God and imitating Him. Exodus and Deuteronomy make this clear when y say, Six days shall you labor and do all your work. But seventh day is a Sabbath to Lord your God. To Lord your God. Lauren Winner, Mudhouse Sabbath Cast your deadly doing down Down at Jesus feet; Stand in Him, in him alone, Gloriously complete. James Proctor, from hymn It Is Finished

Put on my yoke, and learn from me. I m gentle and humble. And you will find rest for yourselves. My yoke is easy to bear, and my burden is light." Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before Lord, our God, our Maker. Christians adopted practice of lighting of candles during Advent in Middle Ages. Anor candle is lit during each of four Sundays of Advent, signifying hope, love, joy, and peace. Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for duration of worship service. Text in bold italics is read toger by entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of worship service leaders. O Come, Messiah, Come Frances R. Havergal 187; Henri A. 6 Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thousands of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. LECTIO SACRA Exodus 20:811; Deuteronomy 5:1215 Remember Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but seventh day is a Sabbath to LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days LORD made heaven and earth, sea, and all that is in m, and rested on seventh day. Therefore LORD blessed Sabbath day and made it holy. Observe Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as LORD your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but seventh day is a Sabbath to LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. You shall remember that you were a slave in land of Egypt, and LORD your God brought you out from re with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore LORD your God commanded you to keep Sabbath day. The word of Lord! Thanks be to God! Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. INTERLUDE Of The Far's Love Begotten Henry Williams Baker, John Mason Neale, and Marcus Aurelius Clemens Prudentius S T A N D I N G Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God and each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. CONFESSION OF SIN Adapted from Psalm 90:12, 10:1 Gracious God, in a world of distractions which compete continuously for our attention, we confess how we have been bad stewards of our time, ignoring your Spirit within our midst. Forgive us, benevolent Far. We confess minutes, hours, days, when we have chosen to busy ourselves with idols of our hearts, irreverently bowing down before m instead of before you. Forgive us, benevolent Far. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 2

7 And in both our busyness and our boredom, we confess to you how we have struggled to accept true rest which your gospel so freely and abundantly offers us: in disbelieving in your mercy, we have pushed you away out of shame; in disbelieving your goodness, we have strived in our own strength to make better lives for ourselves; in disbelieving in your provision, we have sought idols to help us feel safe. Forgive us, benevolent Far. We confess we have done se things knowingly and recklessly, and we have also done se things inadvertently and out of ignorance. Forgive us, benevolent Far. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Micah 7 Our Far, who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for remnant of his inheritance? God does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love. He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. Our Far, you have cast all our sins into depths of sea. May peace of God be with you. And also with you! O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 3

9 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 85:12, 813 LORD, you were favorable to your land; you restored fortunes of Jacob. You forgave iniquity of your people; you covered all ir sin. Praying through Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, re will be pauses for reflection. Let me hear what God LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let m not turn back to folly. Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land. Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each or. Faithfulness springs up from ground, and righteousness looks down from sky. Yes, LORD will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness will go before him and make his footsteps a way. ANTIPHON Adapted from Psalm 2, J. 11 OFFERING The offering is a way for members and friends of Grace Church Seattle to support church s mission and ministry. If you are our guest today, please feel under no compulsion to give. Please let us know you ve joined us today, as well as any comments or prayer requests, by placing your comment card in offering basket. S I T, S T A N D, O R K N E E L ADVENT PRAYER OF YEARNING Far in heaven, So many of us arrive at this time of year exhausted. We are a people weary from hurt and struggle of our lives. We are a community whose mouths and bodies yearn for change. Some of us yearn for employment. Some of us yearn for better jobs. Some of us yearn for romantic love. Some of us yearn for friendship. Some of us yearn to have children. Some of us yearn for end of physical pain and illness. Some of us yearn for healing from abuse and neglect, both past and present. Some of us yearn to be rescued from our battles with anxiety and depression. Some of us yearn to break free from tyranny and shame of personal sin. Some of us yearn for what death has taken away from us. All of us yearn for rest from our heartache and disappointment. All of us yearn for justice, peace, and racial reconciliation. Far, we yearn for rest. So we beseech you, merciful God, to powerfully break through and change hue and landscape of our lives, that you, Good Shepherd, would lead us beside those still waters, into those pastures green. Far in heaven, in our loneliness may we know you as God with us here, now, on this earth. Son of God, in our despair may you bring to blossom our hope which has faded. Holy Spirit, in our exhaustion may you teach us to rest. We yearn for rest. Come, Messiah, come! Amen. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 7

As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen. 20 S E R M O N T E X T 2 [1] Thus heavens and earth were finished, and all host of m. [2] And on seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on seventh day from all his work that he had done. [3] So God blessed seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. Genesis 2:13 20 [8] Remember Sabbath day, to keep it holy. [9] Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, [10] but seventh day is a Sabbath to LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or sojourner who is within your gates. [11] For in six days LORD made heaven and earth, sea, and all that is in m, and rested on seventh day. Therefore LORD blessed Sabbath day and made it holy. [23] Behold, virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and y shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us). [2] When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as angel of Lord commanded him: he took his wife, [25] but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. Exodus 20:811 5 [12] Observe Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as LORD your God commanded you. [13] Six days you shall labor and do all your work, [1] but seventh day is a Sabbath to LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. [15] You shall remember that you were a slave in land of Egypt, and LORD your God brought you out from re with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore LORD your God commanded you to keep Sabbath day. Deuteronomy 5: [25] At that time Jesus declared, I thank you, Far, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden se things from wise and understanding and revealed m to little children; [26] yes, Far, for such was your gracious will. [27] All things have been handed over to me by my Far, and no one knows Son except Far, and no one knows Far except Son and anyone to whom Son chooses to reveal him. [28] Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. [29] Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. 12 [1] At that time Jesus went through grainfields on Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, and y began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. [2] But when Pharisees saw it, y said to him, Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on Sabbath. [3] He said to m, Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him: [] how he entered house of God and ate bread of Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat nor for those who were with him, but only for priests? [5] Or have you not read in Law how on Sabbath priests in temple profane Sabbath and are guiltless? [6] I tell you, something greater than temple is here. [7] And if you had known what this means, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, you would not have condemned guiltless. [8] For Son of Man is lord of Sabbath.
