2 January 3, 2016 The Epiphany of the Lord REFLECTIONS FOR EUCHARISTIC ADORATION THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD, THE POWER OF GOD When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage. When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They said to him, In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel. Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star s appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage. After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way. Matthew 2:1-12 Perhaps we all know the story of Christmas, the story of the magi too well to be amazed how extraordinary it is and how it illustrates the power of God. PRACTICE: Reflect on the extraordinary nature of the events in story of the magi. The magi left their homelands, endured a long journey because of their belief in a prophecy, because they were following a star. They believed that a baby whose parents were not royalty was a king worthy of their visit, worthy of their valuable gifts. They find Jesus, pay homage and leave undetected despite the danger posed by Herod, the chief priests and the scribes. They change their travel plans because of a dream. Reflect on the power of God who makes this all possible - the stirring in the hearts and souls of the magi to believe the Jesus is King and act on their belief in such dramatic ways; the protection God gives to the Holy family, to the magi, despite great danger all around. Reflect now on your own faith, the ability to see Christ as King, the sacrifices you make as a Catholic because of that belief. Reflect on the power of God in your life, leading you through difficult times, threatening situations. Thank God for your faith and ask Him for the ability to believe that He is always with you giving you what you need even if you don't see it or understand it. 4 January 3,2016 The Epiphany of the Lord Prayer of Pope Frances for the Jubilee Year of Mercy Lord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, And have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: If you knew the gift of God! You are the visible face of the invisible Father, Of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and Mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. In appreciation of the volunteers of the Diocese of Venice, Bishop Frank J. Dewane invites all volunteers to a Mass on Saturday, January 16 at 10:00a.m. at St. Leo Parish, Beaumont Road, Bonita Springs. The Mass is an opportunity to extend gratitude and appreciation for those who generously give of their time and talent. A lunch will follow the Mass in the Parish Hall. By: Phyllis & Ed Schilling God s Piano Lesson A few weeks ago we picked up a piano from a yard sale. It was an unexpected purchase, but very exciting as everyone in our family is interested in learning to play it. I ve played the guitar for years, but never really learned to read music. The guitar is a fairly simple instrument because if you learn some chords you can play songs. A musician friend of mine explained that playing the piano is more difficult than the guitar because you cannot just pick it up. You must learn to share the notes and the chords together in a melody, use both hands, and feel a rhythm. Because he is a musician, I believed him, of course. After all, he knows how to read music, and I don t, and certainly the bit of strumming I do on the guitar does not qualify me for any kind of musician status. It makes sense that sitting down at a piano would present a bigger challenge for someone like me who has never played before. Before I even sat down at the bench, these are the thoughts that crossed my mind over and over: This isn t going to be easy. I won t be able to play a song. I can t read music. Every negative thought that I could think was ringing in my ears because I was told that without experience, it would be a long time before I would figure out how to make my inexperienced fingers punch out a decent tune. All of this seems to make sense, and is just common day advice, yet, it is the same trap into which I ve fallen over and over in my life. I place limits on myself based on what other people say, whether it is about piano playing, motherhood, writing, aging, or being a Christian. I forget constantly that God knows what he is doing. In fact, He will never place limits on you. If you want to learn to play the piano, sit at the bench and try it. Don t pass up trying or learning because you allow self-imposed barriers to hinder you. Don t prepare yourself for failure and disappointment, instead prepare for success. God s success. Piano music sounds differently to God than it does to the well-trained expert musician. He will never hear a sour note. He will never tell you to stop. He will never close His ears. When my husband explained how the keys were set up to me, and how certain notes and chords worked together, I immediately wanted to explore more. After a couple of weeks of practicing with notes and sounds, words started to form in my mind, the same way they do when I play the guitar. They were simple words about my relationship with God. The notes and words fell into place: I don t know why I feel this way But when I m sad and lonely Or when I m feeling sorry I need you I need you It was another very clear reminder that I must not allow the well-intended limits of others to affect me. God is completely open to hearing my song. No matter what the challenge, learning to play a song, trying to overcome a serious illness, or overcoming other struggles, when it comes to God, there are no limits.
