Holy Thursday Part of the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday is the beautiful ceremony of the Washing of the Feet, commemorating the humble example of service Jesus gave us by washing the feet of his disciples. Confirmation preparation sessions are now available for Catholics 18 years of age and older who have already received the sacraments of Baptism and First Communion. 6 March 4, 2018 RCIA The First Scrutiny At the 10:00 AM Mass on the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent our RCIA Elect, Jacob Schenk and Jack Monett, will participate in prayers known as the Scrutinies. At this Mass, we will use the readings from Cycle A. This week for the First Scrutiny we use the Gospel referred to as The Woman at the Well (John 4:5-42). Next week for the Second Scrutiny is The Man Born Blind (John 9:1-41). For the Third Scrutiny the reading is The Raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-45). These readings are rich in themes and symbols for the final preparations before their sacraments at the Easter Vigil, and helpful for our own Lenten journeys, too. The Gospel of The Woman at the Well centers on the theme of Jesus providing living water that brings eternal life. In the Scrutiny prayers the Elect are encouraged to acknowledge their sins and turn their lives to God. They are dismissed to ponder and discuss the meaning of this Gospel in their lives and discern how they will reject everything in their life that is displeasing to God. All who are unbaptized, baptized into another faith denomination, or baptized Catholic but have not received Eucharist or Confirmation are invited to call the Parish Office at and they will put you in touch with a member of the RCIA team. Checchio will celebrate the Chrism Mass with the priests of the Diocese. At this Mass, the Bishop will bless the Holy Oils which each parish receives for the rites of anointing. These Holy Oils, which are used to sanctify the Faithful, have been channels of holiness for centuries! The Oil of Catechumens is used to anoint infants and adults before their Baptism; the Oil of the Sick is used on the forehead and hands of the infirmed in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; and Sacred Chrism is used to anoint the head of the newly baptized, the foreheads of confirmandi, the hands of a priest at his ordination, the head of a bishop at his ordination, and the altar and walls of new churches. At the Mass, all priests make a Renewal of Commitment to Priestly Service, recommitting themselves to their Bishop and to their ministry to God and His People; the Bishop and all Priests then ask the people for a pledge of their prayerful support. All are strongly encouraged to join in the ancient, grace-filled Chrism Mass.
