2 2 Catechetical Sunday Blessing Confirmation Investiture By Laurie Huff, Director of Religious Education On Sunday, October 7, during the 9:30 a.m. Mass, our parish community was privileged to be introduced to our young Seventh and Eighth Grade youth who are preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation this spring with a special rite known as Investiture. Investiture is a pledge made by candidates to fully participate in the preparations leading up to the celebration of Confirmation with the guidance of their parents and sponsor. This commitment includes faithfully participating in Sunday Eucharist, an openness to continued learning of the Catholic Faith and deepening one s relationship with God and the Church through prayer, Scripture reading, and acts of service. In addition, the parish community in turn commits to offering the Confirmation Candidates their loving support and prayers throughout the process and beyond. May the Holy Spirit be our guide! Fall Alumni Mass On Saturday, November 10, at 5:00 p.m., we invite SMOT alumni and their guests to join us for our fall Alumni Mass. Our Pastor, Fr. Terry Hamilton (Class of 1961), will be our Celebrant for this special Mass honoring our Veterans and our Patron Saint. After Mass, join us for dinner at our second annual Martinfest! We will be serving a delicious meal catered by R & R Meats ($18.00 per person). After dinner, stay for the Martinfest fun! Martinfest will showcase our Lucky 11s Major Award Raffle and features: a Craft Beer Tasting, Live Entertainment, a Silent Auction, a Basket Bonanza Raffle, Splitthe-Pot, Suds OR Suds Door Prize, and a Rapid Gift Card Raffle. 6 6 Martinfest Back by popular demand Our second annual fall Martinfest will be held indoors on our parish campus from 6:00 p.m. until midnight. This adult-only event will showcase our Lucky 11s Major Award Raffle. (Our feast day is on November 11 and our church was also founded in 1911!) This evening will begin at 5:00 p.m. Mass where we ask SMOT Alumni to join us in a special heritage celebration of our Patron Saint. After Mass, we will be serving a delicious dinner in Fr. Mick Hall catered by local favorite R&R Meats. After dinner, head on over to our Parish Center for our Craft Beer Tasting! We have invited some local breweries to bring several of their brews for this tasting. Samples, as well as fullsized beers will be available for purchase. This will be an opportunity for you to see what the community has to offer as far as craft beer selection. There is NO admission charge for this event and entertainment will be provided by SMOT parishioner and alumnus, Tom Gilker s band Ripple Effect. NEW THIS YEAR: Bourbon and Wine will also be served! Throughout the evening, we will be awarding prizes for Lucky 11s Major Award Raffle, with the grand prize drawing held at 11:11 p.m. Winners need not be present to win. Be sure to get your tickets in now to participate in our Earlybird Drawings held on the 11th of each month up until Martinfest. We will also be featuring a Silent Auction and Basket Bonanza raffle. A Split-the-Pot and a Rapid Raffle Gift Card Game will be included in the evening s events, as well. 7 7 Why Do Catholics Do That? By Angela Birkhead-Flight, Music & Liturgy Director For All the Saints! As we celebrate All Saints Day on November 1, I can t help but marvel at the richness of our Mother Church. What wisdom was shown in the development of the canonization process so that we would have examples of how to live our faith. And there is such a wide variety of saints that it is easy to find saints to relate to. For sainthood isn t always about working miracles on earth, doing great public works, or living lives of deprival; it s about the person s relationship with God. So, there is a great diversity of saints, from those working among the poor to those living a quiet life of solitude in prayer. Yet the issue of saints is one for which we Catholics are heavily criticized. Most other Christian churches do not pray to the saints. They feel that one should always pray directly to God. Why pray to someone who is gone and dead? For starters, we believe they are not dead. If you believe in the resurrection then they are alive and well. Also, these men and women of faith were canonized as saints because of their close relationship with God. So, since they are standing there at the right hand of God, so to speak, why not ask them to pray for us? We often ask our friends here on earth to pray for us. Since we believe the saints to be living, there is little difference in asking a saint to also pray for us. You do not need to limit your request of prayers to those who are listed in the official canon of saints. As part of the beatification and canonization process, Church officials look for evidence that a person has had an effect regarding something here on earth. For example, there are two healings attributed to Pope John Paul II. The first is a nun healed of Parkinson s Disease who had been bedridden. The second healing occurred on the day of his beatification when a woman was healed of brain damage and her family converted to the faith. People prayed to him for help long before he was canonized. So, as you can see, you can pray to those not canonized, as well as those in the official canon. You can ask for intercession for those not Catholic. I remember when I was just getting started playing the organ and I found out that my first piano teacher had died. I prayed to her for assistance and found myself greatly improving in skill immediately afterwards. Was this a miracle? Perhaps not, but it sure felt like one to me. I have since asked every organist I know who has died to help. If you pay careful attention, you will notice that at the Baptisms held during Masses here at St. Martin, I include the names of the child, parents and godparents in the litany of the saints. This practice is based on the assumption that somewhere in heaven there is someone with that name who will watch over and protect the faith of the person being baptized. So, do not feel constrained by comments from those of other religions or constricted by the official list of saints given to us by the Church. By all means, pray! Pray to those canonized and those not. Pray to those long gone from earth and to your own family members who have gone before you to the arms of God. And always, pray for each other and for those of us on staff at St. Martin of Tours that our faith will continue to grow. In remembrance and thanksgiving for all the Saints on their Feast Day (November 1), especially those Saints who have inspired, helped or interceded for us. For all our loved ones who have preceded us, that they enjoy the peace and joy of being with God. That through the intercession of St. Martin of Tours (November 11), we may practice charity and be mindful of the needs of others. To thank God for the freedom we enjoy in this country, and for all veterans who have served and for those who will continue to serve to preserve our freedom. As we honor the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (November 21), may she as our Mother present us to her Son. We pray, Father, in thanksgiving for all the blessings You have bestowed on us, we pray also for the safety of all those traveling over the Thanksgiving Holiday. For those struggling with debilitating disease, especially those in our St. Martin community, that they be given strength for the journey through their parish and relationship with God. For our second graders and others preparing to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time in December. For our children preparing for Confirmation in April. For our RCIA candidates and catechumens as they begin their journey leading to the reception of the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil. For government policy changes that will turn around the environmental destruction taking place, including that affecting our weather patterns, the temperature of the earth, and the destruction of bee colonies. For those working to feed the poor in our community during this holiday season, and for a generous response to their requests for help. For an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life. For all recipients of our parish healing / prayer blankets for their physical, mental and spiritual health. For the special needs of all members of our Parish and their families, and the special intentions in our Parish Intention Book.
