3 THE COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED NOVEMBER 2, 2014 I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord John 11:25a When St. Paul talked about the resurrection of the dead with the philosophers at Athens, many laughed and mocked him (Acts 17:32). The Gospel, he would later write, is foolishness to the wise of this world (1 Cor. 1:18). Yet this week s First Reading tells us that it is foolish to think that the souls of the just are dead. Instead, theirs is a hope full of immortality. By His resurrection, Jesus frees the human race from the fear of death from the terrible fear of the unknown, of our own disintegration that holds us in a kind of slavery (Heb 2:14-15). Because He has walked the dark valley of death before us, because He has promised to walk alongside us, we can take courage and fear no evil, in the words of this week s Psalm. This is God s will for us, the reason Jesus came into the world, according to Sunday s Gospel: that we will recognize Jesus as the Son of God, and by believing in Him be raised to eternal life. If we believe in Him, we will follow Him, as the Psalmist says: He will refresh our souls in the waters of Baptism, anoint our heads with the oil of Confirmation, and set before us the table of the Eucharist. There our cups will be filled to overflowing. And by these mysteries of His kindness and goodness, we will dwell in the house of the Lord in this life and in the life to come. The First Reading seems to allude to the doctrine of Purgatory, to the souls of the just being chastised, purified as gold in a furnace and made worthy of God (1 Cor. 3:11 12). This reading also tells us of the glory of the saints, who will share in the rule of Christ, judging and ruling over the nations (Luke 22:30). Through the newness of life we have in the sacraments, this week s Epistle adds, we grow into union with Him, confident that we will be united with Him in the Resurrection. 4 The month of November is traditionally a month of prayer for the dead. As we prepare for this month of prayer I would ask that you consider the following: *As has been done at MQH in the past, we will once again have a table of remembrance for deceased loved ones. Pictures may be brought in, but they should be no larger than 6 X 8 (including the frame) so we can fit the numerous pictures on the tables. Please bring in a picture of your deceased loved ones who you would like to be remembered during this month of prayer. *Please consider having Masses offered for the faithful departed. This is an ages old practice. In doing this, those present, choosing to do so, have their prayers offered for the person for whom the Mass is offered. Those present may, as well, offer their reception of Holy Communion on behalf of the person for whom the Mass is offered. *Offer penance for loved ones who have died. Your offerings are now a way of loving those who have died. By offering acts of self-denial, prayer (including reading of Sacred Scripture, other spiritual readings, and study), and works of mercy (and almsgiving) you are able, through your union with Christ, offer these to God. Christ makes our offerings holy he sanctifies them and raises them up. Our offerings do make a difference and aid those who are still in need of our prayers. *If you do not have a loved one who has died, please consider offering prayers for others loved ones who have died or for those persons buried in our cemetery. This is also a common practice, when during the pause for the dead in the Eucharistic Prayer, to remember those buried in our cemetery. FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY O Lord, who art ever merciful and bounteous with Thy gifts, look down upon the suffering souls in purgatory. Remember not their offenses and negligence s, but be mindful of Thy loving mercy, which is from all eternity. Cleanse them of their sins and fulfill their ardent desires that they may be made worthy to behold Thee face to face in Thy glory. May they soon be united with Thee and hear those blessed words which will call them to their heavenly home: "Come, blessed of My Father, take possession of the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world." 5 The Knights of Columbus ask for your help: Each year we provide Thanksgiving meals for almost 45 families in our area. We are heavily dependent upon your kindness and generosity in this work of mercy and charity. Your past contributions are greatly appreciated by the Knights and those who have been the beneficiaries of your contributions and efforts. If you would once again kindly consider helping us to help those in need it will be greatly appreciated. Needed contributions may be of the following (all are needed): *Place a monetary contribution in the 5 gallon water container on the back table. This portion of donations helps with all the perishable items. *Take a shopping bag provided by a Knight, fill the bag with the items listed, and return it to the temporary office on or before Sunday, November 23rd.
