We all know what it feels like to ask yourself this question. Whether you re second-guessing a job you took, a relationship you find yourself in the middle of, or what you ordered for lunch, you know the sensation of having the sinking feeling that you might have made a mistake. Being a disciple of Jesus is no different. The Gospel of Luke was written to a man named Theophilus. We don't know a lot of details about Theophilus, but he appears to be a Christian who is having second thoughts about the life of discipleship he has embarked upon. This is how Luke addresses him in the book s beginning: [I ve written this for you], Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught. Apparently, Theophilus is questioning his decision to become a Christian. Living in a culture that is marked by ruthless power politics, a relatively weak and often hidden church, and an almost incessant questioning and dismissal of the Christian faith, it is easy to envision Theophilus asking questions like: Is this Jesus story really true? Is God really faithful to his promises? What does true discipleship look like? Luke went to great lengths researching and crafting his gospel to answer questions like these. He wrote it so that people like Theophilus, and us, might have confidence that God is at work in the world and in our lives through Jesus Christ. To be a disciple of Jesus is to be on the right path the path of salvation, which to Luke and his original audience meant healing or wholeness. So, whether you re a new Christian, a seasoned saint, or someone investigating Jesus for the first time, Luke is a great book for you to dive into. Let us worship. 3 REFLECTION QUOTES...regeneration may be defined as that work of the Holy Spirit, whereby he initially brings persons into living union with Christ, changing their hearts so that they who were spiritually dead become spiritually live, now able to repent of sin, believe the gospel, and serve the Lord. Anthony Hoekema I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew He moved my soul to seek him, seeking me. It was not I that found, O Savior true; No, I was found of thee. Thou didst reach forth thy hand and mine enfold; I walked and sank not on the storm-vexed sea. 'Twas not so much that I on thee took hold, As thou, dear Lord, on me. I find, I walk, I love, but oh, the whole Of love is but my answer, Lord, to thee! For thou wert long beforehand with my soul; Always thou lovedst me. Anonymous, "I Sought the Lord" God does not need your good works, but your neighbor does. Martin Luther

4 Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST WELCOME Seated Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in the lobby to engage children in the elements of our worship service. Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself today and every day. John Arndt 2010 The Brilliance CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 103:1-6 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! 5 LECTIO SACRA Deuteronomy 34:1-12 Seated Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And the Lord showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, the Negeb, and the Plain, that is, the Valley of Jericho the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. And the Lord said to him, This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, I will give it to your offspring. I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there. So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord, and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but no one knows the place of his burial to this day. Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated. And the people of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, none like him for all the signs and the wonders that the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, and for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of all Israel. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. 2

6 Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. CONFESSION OF SIN Adapted from 1 John 1:5-9 God is light; in him there in no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him, yet walk in the darkness, we lie and son not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Standing Most holy and merciful Father, we confess to you and to one another, that we have sinned against you by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not fully loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not always had in us the mind of Christ. You alone know how often we have grieved you by wasting your gifts, by wandering from your ways. Forgive us, we pray, most merciful Father; and free us from our sin. Renew in us the grace and strength of your Holy Spirit, for the sake of Jesus Christ your Son our Savior. (You are invited to confess your sins silently) RECEIVING OF GRACE Ezekiel 36:25-27 Brothers and sisters, hear the promise of God through Jesus Christ: I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. 3 May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you!

Hall, 1865 John Thomas Grape, AM PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 90:1-6, Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. You return man to dust and say, Return, O children of man! For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning: in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers. (Continued on the next page.) 4

8 So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Return, O Lord! How long? Have pity on your servants! Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil. Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands! Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 11:30 AM THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Elenore Rose Haubenstock Primrose Josephine Haubenstock Questions from The Book of Church Order, 56-5 Seated And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household. Matthew 28:19; Genesis 17:7; Acts 16:31 1. Do you acknowledge that your children are created in God's image and are a gift from him to both you and the world? 2. Do you acknowledge your children s need of the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ, and the renewing grace of the Holy Spirit? 3. Do you claim God s covenant promises on your children s behalf, and do you look in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ for their salvation, as you do for your own? 4. Do you now unreservedly dedicate your children to God, and promise, in humble reliance upon divine grace, that you will endeavor to set before them a godly example, that you will pray with and for them, that you will teach them the doctrines of our holy religion, and that you will strive, by all the means of God s appointment, to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord? To the congregation: Do you as a congregation undertake the responsibility of assisting in the Christian nurture of these children? PROMISE TO THE CHILD Adapted from the Church of Scotland Baptismal Liturgy 5 For you Jesus Christ came into the world. For you he lived and showed God s love. For you he suffered the darkness of Calvary and cried at the last, It is finished. For you he triumphed over death and rose to new life. For you he reigns at God s right hand. All this he did for you, though you do not know it yet.

9 11:30 AM CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER Adapted from The Book of Common Prayer, 1928 Lord Jesus Christ, who embraces children with the arms of mercy and makes them living members of your Church, give Elenore and Primrose grace to stand fast in your faith, to obey your word, and to abide in your love. Being made strong by your Holy Spirit, may they resist temptation and overcome evil, and rejoice in the life that now is, and dwell with you in the life that is to come; through your merits, O merciful Savior, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, world without end. 10 WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Seated Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen. The Heidelberg Catechism is the best known of the Reformed confessions. It was written in Heidelberg, Germany in 1563 by two young ministers. Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. GOSPEL LESSON Luke 7:11-17, 1 Kings 17:17-24 Giving Glory to God Rev. That I am not my own, but belong with body and soul, both in life and in death, to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from all the power of the devil. He also preserves me in such a way that without the will of my heavenly Father not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, all things must work together for my salvation. Therefore, by his Holy Spirit he also assures me of eternal life and makes me heartily willing and ready from now on to live for him. Standing 7

15 PARISH FELLOWSHIPS Since our congregation draws from a wide geographic area, the parish model provides a way for people to connect with people who live near them. There is the greatest opportunity for organic connection and time together when people are proximate to one another. We want to establish and grow community groups within each parish, and we also hope that quarterly parish fellowships provide a natural way to reach out to neighbors who aren t part of the Grace community. 16 COMMUNITY GROUPS Community groups are places of care and community where we learn more about living the Christian life together. Each group is unique and has its own "personality," and yet all groups are focused on growing in relationship with God and with each other. Groups meet on different nights in various neighborhoods around the city, and include time for fellowship, study and reflection, and prayer together. 19 SERMON TEXT Luke 7:11-17 [11] Soon afterward he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. [12] As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow, and a considerable crowd from the town was with her. [13] And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, Do not weep. [14] Then he came up and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, Young man, I say to you, arise. [15] And the dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. [16] Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet has arisen among us! and God has visited his people! [17] And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country. 1 Kings 17:17-24 [17] After this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became ill. And his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him. [18] And she said to Elijah, What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance and to cause the death of my son! [19] And he said to her, Give me your son. And he took him from her arms and carried him up into the upper chamber where he lodged, and laid him on his own bed. [20] And he cried to the Lord, O Lord my God, have you brought calamity even upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by killing her son? [21] Then he stretched himself upon the child three times and cried to the Lord, O Lord my God, let this child's life come into him again. [22] And the Lord listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child came into him again, and he revived. [23] And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper chamber into the house and delivered him to his mother. And Elijah said, See, your son lives. [24] And the woman said to Elijah, Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth. 16
