The English word Advent is derived from the Latin verb advenire, to come. Advent has to do with the Lord s coming to us. The Lord has come to us (at the birth of Christ), continues to come to us through the power of the Holy Spirit, will come to us again bodily at the end of this age. Advent is a time to reflect upon all of the ways past, present, future in which the Lord enters into our lives our world. Please remember that the purpose of Advent is not to imagine ourselves to be living at the time immediately preceding Christ s birth so somehow pretend that we are waiting for him to be born. Neither is the purpose of Advent to think sentimental thoughts about the baby Jesus. There is no real spiritual power in any of this. Instead, the purpose of Advent is to pray for the coming of the Lord to learn how to wait for him. During Advent we remember his first coming how he kept his promises to his people in the Hebrew Scriptures. Because he was faithful long ago, we can be assured he will remain faithful to the end. Dwelling on God's faithfulness during Advent is a way of enriching strengthening our faith. In addition, we also pray for a greater experience of his presence in our lives today. For this reason, Advent is a great time to begin a new practice of prayer, setting aside time for the Lord in our daily lives. And, finally, Advent is a season to consider (or consider again) Jesus' promises to return to us in bodily form. On that day, he will powerfully graciously deliver us from all evil, overthrow his enemies, wipe away every tear. In this way, Advent is a time where we foster cultivate our ability to faithfully expectantly wait for the Lord's return. Let us worship! (Adapted from Rev. Jeff Meyers) Cover artwork: Advent III Jason Marta, 2018 Unless otherwise noted, all Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Stard Version (ESV ), copyright 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. 3 REFLECTION QUOTES I can love again More than a sentimental feeling I hold within With a heart full of compassion You took me in You're my closest friend, I can love again A smile would hide my pain I'd have to laugh to keep from shedding a tear The sting of a promise broken, a needy word unspoken Helped turn my pain to fear But there You were for me Helped to ease the pain that caused me agony Can't help but to wonder Why You pulled me from under But it feels so good within, I can love again No one could see What my foolish pride had done to me Caused me to ignore All the love that was in store That was in store for me It's because of You Pride has passed away Your love revealed what was true All the love within Caused this broken heart to mend Your love I want to commend Everybody, I can love again Life is worth living again Since You gave me joy peace down within So good to know I'm loved for sure Fear no longer lives within, I can love again I Can Love Again, by Commissioned I always thought of the joy referred to here as the joy which God gives, so it is. I now realize this does not say quite enough. It is also the joy which God possesses experiences.god gives us joy because He is joyful. He is the source of joy, just as He is the source of love, of truth, of mercy, so on. Joy is both a description of God a description of what He gives. The Joy of God, Bob Deffinbaugh

Please silence all mobile phones electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP Adapted from Revelation 7:12, 1517 Seated Sting Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy". Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself today every day. May praise glory wisdom thanks honor power strength be to our God for ever ever. Amen! Never again will we hunger; never again will we thirst. The sun will not beat down on us, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be our shepherd; he will lead us to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from our eyes. Amen! 5 LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE Seated Christians adopted the practice of the lighting of cles during Advent in the Middle Ages. Another cle is lit during each of the four Sundays of Advent, signifying hope, love, joy, peace. The rosecolored cle for the third Sunday in Advent represents joy. Though we wait for Christ s return, we wait with joyful expectation. We are confident of Christ s return because he will come back to complete the work God has begun. LECTIO SACRA Zephaniah 3:1420; Luke 3:718 Old Testament Sing aloud, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice exult with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem! The Lord has taken away the judgments against you; he has cleared away your enemies. The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall never again fear evil. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Fear not, O Zion; let not your hs grow weak. The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing. I will gather those of you who mourn for the festival, so that you will no longer suffer reproach. Behold, at that time I will deal with all your oppressors. And I will save the lame gather the outcast, I will change their shame into praise renown in all the earth. At that time I will bring you in, at the time when I gather you together; for I will make you renowned praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says the Lord. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thouss of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. (Continued on the next page.) 2

Gospel He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our father. For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down thrown into the fire. And the crowds asked him, What then shall we do? And he answered them, Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, whoever has food is to do likewise. Tax collectors also came to be baptized said to him, Teacher, what shall we do? And he said to them, Collect no more than you are authorized to do. Soldiers also asked him, And we, what shall we do? And he said to them, Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, be content with your wages. As the people were in expectation, all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ, John answered them all, saying, I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit fire. His winnowing fork is in his h, to clear his threshing floor to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. This is the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy celebrates its abundance in Christ. CONFESSION OF SIN Adapted from Isaiah 64:15 Oh that you would rend the heavens come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence as when fire kindles brushwood the fire causes water to boil to make your name known to your adversaries, that the nations might tremble at your presence! Sting When you did awesome things that we did not look for, you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence. From of old no one has heard or perceived by the ear, no eye has seen a God besides you, who acts for those who wait for him. 3 (Continued on the next page.)

You meet him who joyfully works righteousness, those who remember you in your ways. Behold, you were angry, we sinned; in our sins we have been a long time, shall we be saved? (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Isaiah 30:18 Brothers Sisters, we serve a God who waits as much as we do during this Advent season. Our God cannot wait to show his mercy to us forgive us of our sins, the moment we turn to Him in faith repentance. What is the promise for his daughters sons? Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him. Praise Jesus for a God who rises quickly to save! In Christ, our Father sts ready even now to show us his gracious mercy! This is the Gospel! Thanks Be to God! May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 8 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalms 77 Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. I cry aloud to God, aloud to God, he will hear me. In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord; in the night my h is stretched out without wearying; my soul refuses to be comforted. When I remember God, I moan; when I meditate, my spirit faints. You hold my eyelids open; I am so troubled that I cannot speak. I consider the days of old, the years long ago. I said, Let me remember my song in the night; let me meditate in my heart. Then my spirit made a diligent search: Will the Lord spurn forever, never again be favorable? Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger shut up his compassion? Then I said, I will appeal to this, to the years of the right h of the Most High. I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will ponder all your work, meditate on your mighty deeds. Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God? You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples. You with your arm redeemed your people, the children of Jacob Joseph. (Continued on the next page.) 5

When the waters saw you, O God, when the waters saw you, they were afraid; indeed, the deep trembled. The clouds poured out water; the skies gave forth thunder; your arrows flashed on every side. The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lighted up the world; the earth trembled shook. Your way was through the sea, your path through the great waters; yet your footprints were unseen. You led your people like a flock by the h of Moses Aaron.
