ORDER OF WORSHIP Sunday, 9 December, 10:30 am

ADVENT 2012 Advent is a time of waiting. We learn to wait, because God has promised to come. Dietrich Bonhoeffer It seems like Christmas comes earlier and earlier each year. Many retailers decorate for Christmas immediately following Halloween. This makes sense because our culture hates waiting. Waiting makes us feel weak. This is where the wisdom of our spiritual ancestors can really help us. According to the church calendar, it isn't Christmas yet. Instead, we are in the season of Advent. Advent is the fourweek period leading up to Christmas Day. Advent is not a time for Christmas carols. Instead, Advent is a time for songs and prayers of longing. Advent means "coming", and it is a time of year when the church prepares to celebrate Christ's first "coming" at Christmas. During Advent, there is a very real sense in which the church goes back in time and puts itself in Israel's shoes while they waited for God to send the promised Messiah. Advent is also a time when the church looks forward to Christ's second coming. When Christ returns, God has promised that he will finish the work of redemption that he has started. Then, he will wipe away every tear. Advent teaches us to keep longing for that day to come. In other words, Advent is a time when we practice the spiritual discipline of waiting. Through faith in God's promises, our waiting becomes worship. Let us worship! WORSHIP SERVICES 10:30 am Sundays. Meeting in the Volunteer Park Seventhday Adventist church building (1300 E Aloha St). 3 REFLECTIONS FOR ADVENT What if your story was somehow ordered by a larger Story? What if you could relinquish the frantic need to master time, and relax into a more sacred rhythm? What if this season of Advent could mark a renewal in your life, a renewal of your time? It's fitting, if you think of it. Exhausted by our need to master time (particularly at this busy time of year), we're reminded that we need a Rescuer, a Savior who will set all things right, restoring and reordering a disordered world and our disordered souls. In Advent, we anticipate and long for God to renew our lives. That's good news the good news. Chuck DeGroat To wait openendedly is an enormously radical attitude toward life. So is to trust that something will happen to us that is far beyond our own imaginings. So, too, is giving up control over our future and letting God define our life, trusting that God molds us according to God s love and not according to our fear. The spiritual life is a life in which we wait, actively present to the moment, trusting that new things will happen to us, new things that are far beyond our own imaginations, fantasy, or prediction. That, indeed, is a very radical stance toward life in a world preoccupied with control. Henri Nouwen The Advent tension is a way of learning again that God is God: that between even our deepest and holiest longing and the reality of God is a gap which only grace can cross. Otherwise we are alone again, incommunicado, our signals and symbols bounced back to us off the glassy walls of the universe. Rowan Williams, A Ray of Darkness

GRACE CHURCH SEATTLE SUNDAY, 9 DECEMBER 2012 THE SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT LIGHTING THE FIRST CANDLE OF ADVENT Christians adopted the practice of the lighting of candles during Advent in the Middle Ages. Another candleis lit during each of the four Sundays of Advent, signifying hope, love, joy, and peace. S T A N D I N G CALL TO WORSHIP Adapted from Psalm 5:13 Give ear to our words, O LORD; consider our groaning. Give attention to the sound of our cries, our King and our God, for to you do we pray. 5 God promises David that he will send to his people an everlasting king who will reign with perfect righteousness and justice. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the Bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. LECTIO SACRA 2 Samuel 7:817 Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever. In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David. The Word of the Lord! Thanks be to God! Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. INTERLUDE O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 2

S T A N D I N G CONFESSION OF SIN Make confession to God the Lord, and let everyone acknowledge with me their sins against God and their neighbor. In this season of Advent, we are so grateful for the coming of Jesus Christ into our world. He is the promised Great Warrior who has defeated sin and death. He is the promised Everlasting King who reigns with perfect justice and righteousness. He is the promised Suffering Servant who took upon himself our sin. He is promised Savior of the World who is making all things new. Good and gracious God, we lay our sins before you, confessing the times when we have not lived in light of these fulfilled promises. We have lived in fear by not trusting you in our relationships and circumstances, by putting our hope in our finances or accomplishments, and by demanding comfort. We have sought to control our lives by not addressing our addictions, by refusing to listen to your voice, and by our cynicism and anger. We have paid for our own sins by being dominated by shame and guilt, by seeking to do good works to gain your favor, and by not believing that we are forgiven. Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. We have only lived for this life, by centering our lives on created things instead of you, by coveting our neighbors possessions, and by being selfcentered, disregarding those around us. Because Jesus lived, died, resurrected, and ascended into heaven, we confess our sins with the great confidence that you will forgive, accept, and renew us. (You are invited to personalize your confession as you pray silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted Philippians 2:79 Jesus emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name. Because of Christ our King, we are forgiven and our sins are remembered no more. Go in peace. Amen. 8 PRAYING ADVENT PROMISES Isaiah 40:111 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins. A voice cries: In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken. A voice says, Cry! And I said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the LORD blows on it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Go on up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news; lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, Behold your God! Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 5

Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen. HYMN OF HOPE Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing Robert Robinson 1758, John Wyeth 1813 Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing Thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! I m fixed upon it, mount of God s unchanging love. Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by Thy help I m come; And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, interposed His precious blood. O to grace how great a debtor daily I m constrained to be! Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; Here s my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above. (Repeat first verse) Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. 18 S E R M O N T E X T [8:1] And Saul approved of his execution. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. [2] Devout men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him. [3] But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison. [4] Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word. [5] Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ. [6] And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip when they heard him and saw the signs that he did. [7] For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who had them, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. [8] So there was much joy in that city. [9] But there was a man named Simon, who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, saying that he himself was somebody great. [10] They all paid attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the power of God that is called Great. [11] And they paid attention to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic. [12] But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. [13] Even Simon himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip. And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed. [14] Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, [15] who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, [16] for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. [17] Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. [18] Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, [19] saying, Give me this power also, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit. [20] But Peter said to him, May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! [21] You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. [22] Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. [23] For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity. [24] And Simon answered, Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me. [25] Now when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel to many villages of the Samaritans.
