1 BEHOLD, the Bridegroom cometh: go ye out With lighted lamps garls round about To meet Him in a rapture with a shout. It may be at the midnight, black as pitch, Earth shall cast up her poor, cast up her rich. It may be at the crowing of the cock Earth shall upheave her depth, uproot her rock. For lo, the Bridegroom fetcheth home the Bride: His Hs are Hs she knows, she knows His Side. Like pure Rebekah at the appointed place, Veiled, she unveils her face to meet His Face. Like great Queen Esther in her triumphing, She triumphs in the Presence of her King. His Eyes are as a Dove s, she s Doveeyed; He knows His lovely mirror, sister, Bride. He speaks with Dovevoice of exceeding love, And she with lovevoice of an answering Dove. Behold, the Bridegroom cometh: go we out With lamps ablaze garls round about To meet Him in a rapture with a shout. Advent Sunday, Christina Rossetti Advent I

The English word Advent is derived from the Latin verb advenire, to come. Advent has to do with the Lord s coming to us. The Lord has come to us (at the birth of Christ), continues to come to us through the power of the Holy Spirit, will come to us again bodily at the end of this age. Advent is a time to reflect upon all of the ways past, present, future in which the Lord enters into our lives our world. Please remember that the purpose of Advent is not to imagine ourselves to be living at the time immediately preceding Christ s birth so somehow pretend that we are waiting for him to be born. Neither is the purpose of Advent to think sentimental thoughts about the baby Jesus. There is no real spiritual power in any of this. Instead, the purpose of Advent is to pray for the coming of the Lord to learn how to wait for him. During Advent we remember his first coming how he kept his promises to his people in the Hebrew Scriptures. Because he was faithful long ago, we can be assured he will remain faithful to the end. Dwelling on God's faithfulness during Advent is a way of enriching strengthening our faith. In addition, we also pray for a greater experience of his presence in our lives today. For this reason, Advent is a great time to begin a new practice of prayer, setting aside time for the Lord in our daily lives. And, finally, Advent is a season to consider (or consider again) Jesus' promises to return to us in bodily form. On that day, he will powerfully graciously deliver us from all evil, overthrow his enemies, wipe away every tear. In this way, Advent is a time where we foster cultivate our ability to faithfully expectantly wait for the Lord's return. Let us worship! (Adapted from Rev. Jeff Meyers) Cover artwork: Advent I Jason Marta, 2018 Unless otherwise noted, all Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Stard Version (ESV ), copyright 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. 4 Please silence all mobile phones electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT WELCOME Seated Lyrics: John Mason Neale, 1851 Music: VENI EMMANUEL (chant) PRELUDE O Come, O Come, Emmanuel Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy". Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself today every day. CALL TO WORSHIP Adapted from Jeremiah 33:1416, Psalm 25:110 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will cause a righteous Branch to spring forth bring my promised salvation to Israel. The Lord is our righteousness. The days are surely coming, says our God, when justice mercy will be executed throughout the l. The Lord is our righteousness. The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when my promised one will teach transgressors my ways, heal the world with love mercy. The Lord is our righteousness. 5 LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE Seated Christians adopted the practice of the lighting of cles during Advent in the Middle Ages. Another cle is lit during each of the four Sundays of Advent, signifying hope, love, joy, peace. LECTIO SACRA Jeremiah 33:1416; Luke 21:2536 Old Testament Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel the house of Judah. In those days at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, he shall execute justice righteousness in the l. In those days Judah will be saved, Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: The Lord is our righteousness. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thouss of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. New Testament Jesus said, And there will be signs in sun moon stars, on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea the waves, people fainting with fear with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. And he told them a parable: Look at the fig tree, all the trees. As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves know that the summer is already near.so also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. Heaven earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation drunkenness cares of this life, that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, to st before the Son of Man. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates! by music: TRURO, Psalmodia Evangelica, 1789; text: George Weissel, 1642; trans. Catherine Winkworth 2

6 Sting CONFESSION OF SIN Inspired by Luke 21, adapted from The Abingdon Worship Annual 2008 Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy celebrates its abundance in Christ. Almighty God, you warn us to read the signs for the coming of your glory in the sun, the moon, the stars, the roaring of the seas the waves, the distress among the nations. We have seen it all before. Nothing seems to change. Help us live with courage in this age of ambiguity where wars are fought for peace freedoms are stripped in the name of liberty. Forgive our lapse of focus, our sense that nothing ever really changes. Teach us to wait with patience, that we may be ready as our Redeemer draws near. Amen. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Inspired by "Come, Thou LongExpected Jesus" by Charles Wesley, 1744 Jesus, the longexpected Savior, was born to set us free. He releases us from our fears sins helps us find our rest in him. Jesus delivers us from the way of sin death. Yet he remains the desire of people in every nation, he will direct us into the ways of his kingdom. And so, with hopeful hearts, we call to him: Come, Thou longexpected Jesus by Thine own eternal Spirit rule in all our hearts alone. May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 3

7 Come, Thou LongExpected Jesus Charles Wesley, 1744 Rowl H. Prichard, 1830 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 25:19 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me. Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame; they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous. Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. Remember your mercy, O Lord, your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O Lord! Good upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right, teaches the humble his way. 4
