1 March 1, 2015 SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT LENTEN OFFERING Each Lent Oak Grove collects a special Lenten Offering to benefit the mission ministries of our church. By definition, these are the ministries that care for and assist people outside the walls of our church. Our recent mission fair was a great reminder of how many mission ministries Oak Grove supports. We offer food through Mobile Soup Kitchen, Montclair Blessing Bags, Smart Lunch Smart Kid, It s Spooky to be Hungry, Hagar s House Dinners, and Caring 4 Clarkston. We partner with Metropolitan Community Church and Under the Bridge Ministries to provide food and clothing for homeless and working poor persons in our community. We are a primary supporter of the Toco Hills Community Alliance which offers food, financial assistance, and transportation tokens to people who are struggling financially in our community. We help care for older adults at Wesley Woods and Mountain View Personal Care Home. We help new Americans in their journey to settle in the US through New American Pathways. Our work with the United Methodist Children s Home provides care for families and foster children. These are just a few of the many ministries that your Lenten Offering supports! This year, in addition to all our Oak Grove mission ministries, we are partnering with the United Methodist Church to care for people in Africa. Every 60 seconds, malaria claims a life in Africa. It kills an estimated 655,000 people each year, most of whom are children under 5 and pregnant women. Yet malaria is 100% preventable, treatable, and beatable. Imagine No Malaria is an extraordinary effort by the people of the United Methodist Church to raise $75 million in gifts and pledges by the end of 2015, putting our faith into action to end preventable deaths by malaria in Africa. This program includes prevention, education, communication, and treatment efforts. Significant strides have already been made to lower the number of malaria deaths through this initiative. At Oak Grove, we have committed to give a percentage of our Lenten Offering to this important cause. To contribute to the Lenten Offering, simply put a check marked Lenten Offering in the offering plate or contribute online ( Thank you for the wonderful way you support our missions through your financial gifts, the sharing of your time and talents, and your prayers! This year during the Sundays of Lent we are lighting a candle each week in celebration of one of Jesus I Am sayings. On Good Friday, the candles will be extinguished as we observe the crucifixion of Jesus.
2 8:30 and 11 a.m. ORDER OF WORSHIP March 1, 2015 (In preparation for worship, please silence all cell phones.) Second Sunday in Lent Gathering Music Andante Dale Wood Welcome (Please complete and pass the red friendship pad at this time.) Dr. Glenn Ethridge *Hymn of Praise All Who Hunger TFWS 2126 *Litany Rev. Susan Allen Grady When we feel hungry for more of something - even when we re not sure what that something is, we can remember that Jesus said, When we feel distracted by other means of fulfillment in the world, help us to remember that Jesus said, When we find ourselves feeling inadequate or incomplete in our daily lives, remind us that we fill ourselves up on Jesus sustaining words, When we look around at friends and strangers, assessing how we measure up to others, help us to remember that we are enough and are satisfied by God s grace when we hear Jesus say, When we worry that the satisfaction we have now may one day run out, let us rest in the truth and fullness of Jesus promise, Acolyte lights second candle We light this candle as a reminder that Jesus is the Bread of Life that satisfies our deepest longings. A Morning Prayer and The Lord s Prayer Rev. Allen Grady Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Our Tithes & Offerings Bread of Heaven Roy Hopp Chancel Choir Bread of heaven, you drew near, and the world lashed out in fear, heaven seemed a threat that might take away what we held tight. Bread of heaven you drew near. Bread of heaven, you drew near, and the world broke you in fear, Gone was every gift you gave, sealed inside a borrowed grave. Bread of heaven, you drew near. Bread of heaven, you are here, you can sweep away our fear; Jesus, risen from the dead, now you come as earth s own bread. Faith and hope and love have come, joy and freedom on our tongue, Christ you give and we are fed, you are here as earth s own bread. *Doxology UMH 95 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. (Following the Doxology, children in Pre-K, Kindergarten and First Grade may leave for Children s Church. Pick up in room 206.)
3 Prayer Mrs. Cathy Huffines Dear God, help us to remember that even when we feel like we don t do enough to honor you, you accept us just as we are because you made us and love us. Let us be constant reminders to each other that we are enough. We invite you to join us in this place, making your presence evident in our community, in the name of Jesus we pray. Amen. Scripture John 6:25-35 Mrs. Huffines The Word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. 4 OAK GROVE NEWS March 1, 2015 Lenten Study to Accompany the Sermon Series During the season of Lent, which began with Ash Wednesday on February 18, we have a sermon series inspired by The God We Can Know: Exploring The I Am Sayings of Jesus, by Rev. Rob Fuquay. The series builds upon the recent All In series by urging us to continue to go all in with your faith by seeking to know God more fully and more personally than you have before. We invite you to order your own copy ( or and to read it during Lent as a supplement to the sermon series. If you have any trouble ordering the book, please contact the church office for assistance. Share Communion and Care In March our church will be taking communion to people in our congregation who are homebound. Training is available and servers will be sent in pairs. If you would be interested in participating in this important ministry, please contact Amy Morgan (amorgan@ogumc.org or ). Thank you for helping us extend the table of grace to those who can no longer come to worship! Vacation Bible School: June 8-12 G Force Adventure Park: God s Love in Action! Help Others by Giving Up Something One of the ways that many people observe the season of Lent is by taking on a Lenten discipline. Often this discipline is giving up something we enjoy. This Lent we invite you to consider giving up something that costs money and donating that money to missions through our Lenten Offering. Even small amounts can really add up. For example, if you give up buying a $5 latte on the way to work each day you could accumulate $150 for missions. Our Lenten Offering funds mission ministries that meet the real needs of people. To contribute, simply put a check marked Lenten Offering in the offering plate or contribute online ( Consignment SALE Friday, March 13, 9:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday is half price day!
