1 August 23, 2015 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Oak Grove Is Breaking Ground The Holy Spirit Is Breaking Loose ak Grove will break ground on Sunday, August 23 for our $10 million building program. What an exciting day in the life of the church! The ceremonial turning of dirt will take place on the South Lawn at 10:30 a.m. Sunday school classes should plan to dismiss at 10:20 a.m. so that all can gather on the South Lawn. The 9:35 a.m. worship service will end early that day so that the congregation can be together at 10:30. Ground Breaking August 23, 2015, 10:30 a.m. South Lawn Since our strategic planning process we have been focused on Invitation, Discipleship and Service. Please use this important day to remember our covenant. Invitation - We will mention Oak Grove casually in conversation every week. At least once per quarter we will intentionally invite someone to come to an event at Oak Grove and serve as gracious hosts by meeting them here and showing them around. The ceremonial ground breaking is fun and exciting and a wonderful photo opportunity. However, it is far more important that the day mark a renewed presence of the Holy Spirit at work in our congregation. My prayer for Oak Grove is that we intentionally seek God s guidance for the life and mission and ministry of our congregation. A new building is a tool for ministry. The building itself is neither our goal nor our purpose. The building is a means toward reaching people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, ministering to our community, leading in service to the least, lost, and lonely. Discipleship - We will participate in one small group focused on our spiritual life every year. Service - We will participate in local mission every year, and once every five years we will participate as we are able in an international mission trip. Breaking ground is going to be a great experience for us. I cannot wait. Watching the Holy Spirit break loose at Oak Grove is the goal of our breaking ground.

There are some spaces open in existing groups, and there are new groups forming. Register to join a Covenant Group online ( For more information, contact Rev. Susan Allen Grady (sallengrady@ogumc.org). Registration closes September 1. Being in a Covenant Group the past two years has been a highlight for me! Despite having a strong foundation of church attendance for much of my life, I have learned more in the past two years than in all the previous years combined. I still have much to learn, and I am excited about Amity Farrar Covenant Group Member continuing on this journey with my Covenant Group. Leading and participating in a Covenant Group has been a special experience for me. It all started when I selfishly wanted to be in a Bible study with friends and neighbors and had been searching for such a group. After prayerful consideration, I felt that maybe God wanted me to be the catalyst rather than waiting for someone to ask me to join a group. Scott Bazemore Covenant Group Member

8 covenant groups Frequently Asked Questions Financial Planning and Caregiving: Helping Women Make Wise Choices WHAT is a Covenant Group? A small group (8-10 people) who meet together over the course of 9 months (September May) for Bible study and discipleship. Covenant Groups can be all women, all men, couples, or a little of everything! WHY should I find a Covenant Group? At Oak Grove, we believe that life-change happens best in community where we are inspired and where we grow in faith together. Participating in a Covenant Group will help you develop the spiritual practice of studying scripture and faith with others. Covenant groups also provide a great way to get connected and make new friends. WHAT goes on in Covenant Groups? Every Covenant Group will start with the study entitled Community: Starting Well in Your Small Group. After the completion of this study, each group will choose curriculum moving forward. During your time together, you will have the opportunity to read and discuss scripture and ways to apply God's teachings to your life. You will pray together for the needs of the group and develop life-long friendships. Some groups may include a meal, which is a wonderful way to have time to connect with one another. WHEN do Covenant Groups meet? Some Groups meet at different times of day throughout the week. HOW often does a Covenant Group meet? Each group will determine the schedule that works best for them. Groups are asked to meet every week or every other week from September through May. WHERE do Covenant Groups meet? Most groups meet in homes. Some groups always meet in the same home, and some Groups rotate. Others will meet in a restaurant or coffee shop or at the church. HOW long is each meeting? Typically, a meeting lasts between 60 and 90 minutes but may vary by group. WHAT if I can't make it to every meeting? While it is important to keep your commitment to your group as it lends to the cohesiveness, we understand that emergencies occur from time to time. HOW are Covenant Groups different from other Bible Studies or my Sunday School Class? Being part of a Covenant Group is more than just studying the Bible. When you commit to a group, you commit not only to the study but also to other group members. WHAT about childcare? Some Covenant Group members will bring kids along and arrange a babysitter together to watch all the children. Others take care of their own childcare. Your group will decide together how to handle childcare while you meet. HOW DO I JOIN A COVENANT GROUP? It s easy! You can register online ( or you can contact Rev. Susan Allen Grady (sallengrady@ogumc.org, ).
