1 August 27, 2017 TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST The Art of Church Service I am called to serve the church of Jesus Christ. I serve in my professional life as an ordained clergyperson in the United Methodist Church, and I serve as a volunteer leader for Wesley Woods and the Georgia United Methodist Foundation. I believe in the importance of volunteering and serving in God s work in the world. You may be surprised to hear a pastor say it, but there is a danger to the soul in serving in the church. When we volunteer and serve exclusively in administrative roles, church begins to feel like routine work. And doing God s work should never feel routine; it is holy. Spirituality can get lost in spreadsheets and strategic plans. Often I tell church leaders who have served on administrative committees building, personnel, finance, trustees You need to volunteer on a mission trip or in the youth ministry or teach Sunday School. Direct ministry contact, such as telling people about Jesus or helping the poor, will replenish your spirit. Personnel matters and finance also take time. One of the great joys to me in ministry in the last year has been the Young Adult Bible Study (YABS). I teach the Bible study every Wednesday night, and I have enjoyed spending time with our 20 somethings (give or take a few years). This year, I am also going to lead the Jubilation Choir for Kindergartners. I want to teach children about Jesus, and I want to hear joy in their voices as they sing. I serve in the church because I believe that proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ is important. I serve in the church because church ministry is life-forming and life-transforming. I serve in the church because it feeds my soul. In choosing how you will serve the church, remember that the church needs administrative leaders, but don t let your service get too distant from people who hunger and thirst for Jesus Christ. I have been taking my own advice this year. The building program construction and fundraising consumes a great deal of time. It is important. I am an enthusiastic supporter.

4 OAK GROVE NEWS August 27, 2017 Covenant Group Event: Sunday, August 27 Thinking of joining a covenant group? Covenant groups are small groups that meet weekly, biweekly, or monthly to connect socially, pray for one another, and discuss a book of the Bible or other book together. Covenant groups are a great way to connect more often and grow in relationships with others at Oak Grove. The Find Your Connection Event will take place on August 27, before and after the 9:35 service in Fellowship Hall. Come by to get information and/or sign up to join an existing covenant group or new covenant group. Dusty Schaffner (dlschaffner@gmail.com) for more info, or just show up on the 27th. Hope to see you there! Building Update Top Floor Of New Education Wing To Be Completed; Space For Children Expanded The major component of the next building project is the completion of the top floor of the new wing. With the addition of classroom space, conference room space, office space, and a new prayer room, we will relocate most adult classes to the new wing. This frees space in the children s wing. Some of the priority rooms in the children s wing will be renovated to create a more child-like atmosphere. Additional space will be available for assembly of large groups of children in the children s wing. The nursery will have new space, and there will be an area set aside for nursing mothers. The children s department will receive some additional storage space, and there will be other rooms available for storage by other ministries as well. With the children s Sunday School Assembly Room moved upstairs, the Parlor will be available on Sunday mornings for other functions, perhaps even weekly communion on Sunday mornings. The music ministry will receive the benefit of the shifting of space, too. One room will be set aside as a dedicated handbell room. Racks for youth and children s choir robes will have a new home inside one of the classrooms currently used by Oak Grove Christian School. The construction of the new wing was possible because of sacrificial gifts to our previous campaign. With continuous generosity through our second campaign, we will realize completion of the top floor of the new wing. Lunch Bunch Tuesday, September 5, :30 a.m., Fellowship Hall Introducing a new singing group called Music from the Heart created and led by Jack Moore, Jim Golden, and Nell McCuen. This fall, we are encouraging one another to be present in worship three Sundays a month. This requires sacrifice and shifting of priorities, and the reward is spiritual maturity, inspiration, and motivation. God is at work at Oak Grove; get on board. OAK GROVE New Offices for The United Methodist Children s Home We celebrate the new office location for the United Methodist Children s Home! The new central office will be in the 400 building of 1967 Lakeside Parkway, Tucker, GA (close for Oak Grove!). There will also be satellite offices to help children across our annual conference. Young adults and families who were living on the Decatur campus will be housed in apartment complexes close to the new Tucker office. Around October the new flea market location will be set up and ready to receive donations again. The proceeds from the sale of the Decatur campus will be put into an endowment, which will allow that money to assist children in perpetuity. Churches will continue the yearly offering for the Children s Home as we work together to expand care provided for families and children. For information about how you can be involved in helping children through the Children s Home, contact Amy Morgan (amorgan@ogumc.org). Monday, Sept. 11, :15 p.m., Fellowship Hall Rev. Dave Allen Grady, Director of Church Operations for the United Methodist Children's Home will be our speaker. 8 Your opportunity for small group Bible study in community is coming this fall! Disciple Bible study is still the #1 choice for in-depth Bible study. Testimonials from Disciple Bible Study Facilitators In my first Disciple class 25 years ago, we gave names and one statement about ourselves. I said, "I am Leslie Mcbee and I hate Bible Study." Raised as a Methodist, my own experience with Bible study had been excruciatingly boring. Ill prepared Sunday school teachers sometimes pushed personal agendas with no discussion, and study was anything but alive and challenging. Disciple Study is different. Experiencing the Bible as one message (with experts in language, history, and archaeology) I discovered a living document. My own journey now has a plan desperately needed in unsure times and circumstances. Study takes time... but what time do we "have?" I pray you feel called as an apprentice/ disciple, and will arrange your schedule for time to understand what God calls us to hear. Leslie McBee Disciple Bible Study is an important part of my life. I am busy with work travel and my share of three kids worth of activities but I have learned that every aspect of my life is better when I prioritize Bible study and daily reading. Getting to know a group of Christians through our common faith strengthens my own faith and hopefully helps strengthen theirs. The Bible is an amazing gift to all of us. It can be challenging, but it is also helpful to have a team of friends and the Disciple resources to help reach understanding. This will be my seventh straight year of Disciple and I plan to continue. Mark Byrne
