It is not a service of grief, but a celebration of life and the assurance of life eternal. As we gather to remember, we give thanks to God for mealtime when we gathered around a common table and for laughter that brightened days and for inspiration that gave wings to our dreams. Remind us of happiness we shared when we walked side by side. Rekindle the joy of loving and being loved, when we lived our lives together. We see them now with the eye of memory, their faults forgiven, their virtues expanded. So does goodness live, and weakness fade from sight. We remember especially today those who were part of our congregation at Oak Grove. They cared for us, labored with us, and gave us the legacy of faith. May we carry on a vibrant faith in Jesus Christ. Create in our hearts assurance that they who died on this earth live with you, That as a great crowd of witnesses, they surround us and yet today stir our heart to prayer And song. Amen. Join us for a weekend full of fun, bonfires, hiking, kids activities, free time, and fellowship at Forrest Hills Mountain Resort and Retreat Center in Dahlonega, GA! Cost: $375/room double occupancy. Additional charges for children: $75 per child ages 3-11 years old, $90 per child ages 11 and up. Children under the age of 3 are free.*for information on financial assistance, please contact Rev. Forrest Hills Mountain Resort and Retreat Center is about an hour and a half north of Atlanta. It offers motel style lodging with rooms large enough for the whole family. Each lodge has a communal kitchen, living room, outdoor space, and meeting room. You will be notified of your lodge assignment prior to arrival so you can plan snacks and drinks with others in your lodge, if you'd like. Meet Our New Bishop! November 13, 3:30 p.m. We have a great opportunity to meet Bishop Sue Haupert-Johnson. She will be visiting with the Atlanta-Emory District laity at Inman Park UMC on Sunday, November 13 at 3:30 p.m. This will be a town hall type event where she will receive questions, and share with us her heart and vision for our conference. Charge Conference this Afternoon Oak Grove s Charge Conference will be held in collaboration with other churches in our area at Briarcliff United Methodist Church on Sunday, November 6, 2016, at 3 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. Volunteers and Donations Needed for Feed My Starving Children December 9-11, 2016 Cobb Galleria Centre We need your help to pack over 1 million meals for starving children around the world! Over the weekend of December 9-11, 2016, Feed My Starving Children is hosting its Hope Filled Holiday meal packing event at the Cobb Galleria. It's a terrific new holiday volunteer activity that everyone can enjoy, even children ages 5 and up. In just a two-hour session, you and your family and friends will have so much fun packing thousands of meals for children suffering from severe malnutrition and starvation. If you are looking for a meaningful, fun, and user-friendly volunteer opportunity for your family over the holidays, this is it! Registration is now open online ( HopeFilledHolidayAtlanta). In addition to the meal-packing sessions held on Saturday and Sunday, December 10-11, we need 30 volunteers from OGUMC to help set up at the Cobb Galleria on Friday, December 9 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. OGUMC will be hosting its own Mobile Pack event in 2017, and the Hope Filled Holiday event is a great opportunity to see the entire process first-hand. The Advent Market is Coming Back to Midweek December 14, 2016 Advent Market Calling all Oak Grove artists and crafters! The Advent Market is coming back to Midweek on Wednesday, December 14. We will offer a variety of hand-crafted items, such as paintings, pottery, glass, ornaments, and more. Journeys of Paul Trip Glenn Ethridge will lead a trip to Greece and Turkey March 28 April 7, The deadline for registration is early December, so now is the time to sign up. The trip will help you imagine Paul s missionary journeys, and you will see some of the greatest cities of the ancient world. You will visit Athens, Corinth, and Philippi. The tour is primarily a land tour but it also includes a three day cruise in the Greek Isles, where you will see Mykonos, Crete, Patmos, and Santorini. These hilly cities on the Mediterranean are every bit as beautiful in person as they are on the post cards. Our trip concludes with a trip to Istanbul, where you will see The Blue Mosque, one of the most important sites in the Muslim world, and the stunning Hagia Sophia. Although there are no more informational meetings, Glenn is happy to speak to anyone individually (gethridge@ogumc.org or ). Brochures are also available upon request. January Honduras Mission Trip There are still a few spaces available on the January mission trip to the mainland of Honduras. 7 OAK GROVE NEWS November 6, 2016 UMM Barbecue Proceeds Meeting The United Methodist Men (UMM) will hold a budget meeting inviting church members and staff to make a presentation for funding from the Barbecue proceeds Sunday, November 20, at 12:15 p.m. in room 236. Written requests are also accepted and should be submitted to the UMM by Wednesday, November 16. We invite the entire church to participate, as they helped us earn the money. The UMM wishes to thank all who participated in this year s Barbecue. The Oak Grove United Methodist Men are excited to welcome Dr. Paige Joyner from Wreaths Across America, an organization that places wreaths on the graves of our American heroes every Christmas holiday season.
