1 August 5, 2018 ELEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST BACK TO SCHOOL SUNDAY Through Exodus in an hour. The story of Israel s escape from Egypt is the chief narrative of the Old Testament. From slavery to liberation, God s hand is upon the people of Israel. We will celebrate God s power to set us free from all that confines us and holds us back. We will sing great songs of the faith, hear powerful music from our choir, brass, and praise band, and celebrate God s mighty acts of deliverance. You can prepare for this Sunday by reading the Book of Exodus in advance. Please make August 12 a priority for your presence, and invite someone to join you. We know we will have a great crowd, so please try to bring your whole family in one car and make room for guests by using our non-preferred parking on Oakleigh Court, the barbecue lot, cemetery lot, or Oak Grove Elementary School.

Sermon Upside Down: Dr. Ethridge Servant-King Holy Communion A Service of Word and Table II UMH 12 The sacrament of communion is a sign and means of receiving God's grace. Therefore communion, like grace itself, is available to all people without regard to age, church membership status, relationship to Oak Grove, or denominational affiliation. The table belongs to God, so all are welcome. There is a mobile station for worshipers who prefer to be served in their seats. If you prefer gluten-free elements, please go to the station to the left of the pulpit. You are always welcome to choose any station by simply walking to the station of your choice. Once you receive the bread, please dip it in the grape juice in the chalice. In our tradition worshipers do not drink from the chalice. After receiving communion you may kneel at the chancel to pray or return to your seat. Church Council News The Church Council met July 23 for its regularly scheduled meeting. Mission The church celebrated the multitude of mission experiences taking place at Oak Grove and around the world. Oak Grove remains a leader in the denomination for mission and service. Finance The finance report has been good to date, and we are in a better financial position at this point than we have been in the previous three years. Stewardship Madge Watson presented this year s plan for stewardship which will include two letters and three s. The theme Give God Five asks people who are already giving to the operating budget to increase their giving by 5%. For those not already giving to the church, the stewardship campaign will ask for $10 a week about $500 a year. Letters will begin to go out at the end of September. Parlor The Building Committee updated the Council on progress with construction. In addition, the building committee reminded the Council that Parlor renovations are not included in Phase 2 construction. When the church pledged $3.8 million toward the $5 million goal, the scope of phase 2 was reduced, and Parlor renovations were eliminated. In addition, there is no clear defined use for the Parlor. Since the construction of Grand Hall, the Parlor has been used only a handful of times. The Council agreed to seek input from the congregation on potential uses for the space. Sunday Schedule The task force appointed by the Church Council to evaluate the Sunday morning schedule and recommend ways to 1) promote more families in worship together, 2) encourage more families to participate in Christian education, and 3) remove the conflict between modern worship and Sunday School. The task force brought a working draft of a schedule that called for the modern service to move from 9:35 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Children and youth Sunday School would run from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Children s Church will be offered for 10:45 and 11:00 services. The Council affirmed the general direction of the task force. The task force will seek more input from congregation. Church Governance The task force evaluating the One Board model of church governance expects to bring its final report to the August meeting. The task will bring a recommendation including supporting documents. The task force meets August 5 and August 19. This task force also seeks more input from the congregation with the Church Council. Town Hall There will be a Town Hall meeting on Sunday, August 12, at 3 p.m. in Grand Hall to receive congregational input on potential uses for the parlor, potential changes to the Sunday morning schedule, and potential changes to the structure of church governance. Everyone is invited to come and share ideas. Broken Water Main The Council received a report on the broken water main. Information about this issue has been widely published in and church newsletter. The Church Council next meets August 27, 7 p.m. in the Board Room. All Church Council meetings are open to the congregation. There will be a Town Hall meeting on Sunday, August 12, at 3 p.m. in Grand Hall. The congregation is invited to bring input to conversations underway about Sunday morning schedule, changing to a new church governance structure, and ideas for how the parlor can best be used. No reservations are necessary.

What Do You Think? Several task forces seek input from the congregation on potential changes to the church governance structure, Sunday morning schedule, and potential uses for the parlor. Church governance Oak Grove is evaluating moving toward a One Board governance structure to increase efficiency and focus meetings more on mission, values, and purpose rather than exchanging reports. Persons wanting to share input on the One Board structure may send s to oneboard@ogumc.org. Sunday morning schedule changes are being considered to encourage families to worship together, increase participation in Sunday School, and remove the conflict between Modern Worship and Sunday School. You can your input to Sunday@ogumc.org. Since construction of Grand Hall, use of the Parlor has become minimal. When the church pledged $3.8 million toward the $5 million Phase 2 Building Project, renovation of the Parlor was removed from the scope of the project.
