1 July 30, 2017 EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST BUILDING UPDATE Generous Giving Means Lower Debt We launched the Deep Roots, New Growth campaign on faith because we had important needs for our youth and seniors. When we began the project we promised that the residual debt will not exceed $1.8 million. If people give generously, we believe we can reduce the residual debt by even more, and if giving matched what people gave in the first three year campaign, then we would be debt-free at the end of this campaign! Coxe Curry is working with us again to help us have a successful capital stewardship campaign. We invite and encourage broad participation and sacrificial giving. Addressing the needs of our membership is critical to the church and ultimately meets our ministry goals. Finishing our building program will improve spaces for our children, provide accessible entrances, resolve long standing critical maintenance issues, and provide improvements to sacred spaces!

8 Your opportunity for small group Bible study in community is coming this fall! Disciple Bible study is still the #1 choice for in-depth Bible study. Disciple helps you search scripture in community as you find meaning for your life together with other disciples. Below are your choices for participating in Disciple this fall: Disciple 1: Becoming Disciples through Bible Study (pre-requisite for other Disciple studies) a 34-week overview of the entire Bible study gives the Old and New Testaments equal time, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as a revelation of God draws upon the work of scholars, the personal Bible reading and study of the participant, and dynamic group discussion to aid understanding of the Bible participant book: $44 Sundays, 5:30-7:30 p.m., starting September 10, Joy Trotti facilitating Tuesdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m., starting Sept. 12, Stephanie Byrne and Leslie McBee facilitating Disciple 1 x 2 meets every other week on Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m., starting September 13, Ruth Primm facilitating Disciple 2: Into the Word, Into the World a 32-week study proclaims the transforming power of Scripture while teaching Bible study skills that take participants deeper into the Scripture keeping Bible study related to witness is reinforced while participants are encouraged to practice spiritual disciplines arising out of Scripture for the purpose of changing habits and transforming lives Participant book: $44 Sundays, 5:30-7:30 p.m., starting September 11, Cliff Howard facilitating Disciple 3: Remember Who You Are a 32-week study of the major and minor Old Testament prophets, with the exception of Daniel, and the 13 Letters traditionally attributed to Paul. Testimonials from Disciple Bible Study Facilitators In my first Disciple class 25 years ago, we gave names and one statement about ourselves. I said, "I am Leslie Mcbee and I hate Bible Study." Raised as a Methodist, my own experience with Bible study had been excruciatingly boring. Ill prepared Sunday school teachers sometimes pushed personal agendas with no discussion, and study was anything but alive and challenging. Disciple Study is different. Experiencing the Bible as one message (with experts in language, history, and archaeology) I discovered a living document. My own journey now has a plan desperately needed in unsure times and circumstances. Study takes time... but what time do we "have?" I pray you feel called as an apprentice/ disciple, and will arrange your schedule for time to understand what God calls us to hear. Leslie McBee Disciple Bible Study is an important part of my life. I am busy with work travel and my share of three kids worth of activities but I have learned that every aspect of my life is better when I prioritize Bible study and daily reading. Getting to know a group of Christians through our common faith strengthens my own faith and hopefully helps strengthen theirs. The Bible is an amazing gift to all of us. It can be challenging, but it is also helpful to have a team of friends and the Disciple resources to help reach understanding. This will be my seventh straight year of Disciple and I plan to continue. Mark Byrne
