1 November 12, 2017 LAITY SUNDAY Oak Grove is blessed to be led by an outstanding group of clergy. However, only a few people at Oak Grove are designated as clergy. Everyone else falls into the category of laypeople. Therefore, most of who we are and what we do as a church depends on the church laity that lift up prayers, fill the pews, pay the bills, do the good works, and spread the word. Each year Oak Grove celebrates Laity Sunday to recognize that it is the laypeople of the church that determine who we are as a people. This year we emphasize that God has created us and brought us together to do good works. Not so that we can be acceptable to God, but because God has created us for this purpose. In worship, we will highlight some of the ministry of our laity, but please keep in mind that we will only highlight a small slice of the service that goes on at Oak Grove. Good works include a wide variety of activities, including caring for those in need, leading in worship, teaching, visiting the sick and imprisoned, and praying for others. We all make mistakes in life, and doing good works will not make up for that for any of us, but God has always used imperfect people to bring about the kingdom of God. I hope you are encouraged by these examples, and inspired to find your own place in God s kingdom where you can carry out the good works that God has created in advance for you to do. Blessings, Gil Kersh, Lay Leader
