1 June 24, 2018 FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST New Hope UMW School in Liberia Almost ten years ago, the Oak Grove United Methodist Women (OGUMW) responded to a plea from Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, then president of Liberia, to help her country by building schools. Liberia had been devastated by years of civil wars, and Sirleaf asked, in an article she wrote for a magazine published for Methodist women, Where is the church? Our UMW said, We are the church, and did its due diligence for several months before putting the idea of building an elementary school in Liberia before the full board for a vote. The vote, taken by secret ballot, was unanimous. Planning, fund raising, and mission teams began to come together and over a period of about 18 months, our UMW, backed by the entire generous congregation at Oak Grove UMC, built an elementary school in the outskirts of Monrovia, Liberia s capitol city. We made a five-year covenant agreement with the Liberian UMW (which had been praying for the funds to build the school) to support the school. As this school year ended, we have fulfilled our covenant. As part of the covenant, the Liberian UMW agreed that the school would institute tuition fees and become self-supporting. They have done this and more. The school has expanded from grades K-6, has added grades 7, 8 and 9, and has added a three room classroom for the younger classes. The Monrovia District UMW is currently working on building an auditorium. Thirteen ninth graders took the national exam last month. God has done amazing things through our steps in faith. Oak Grove UMC, your gifts, your faith, your prayers, and your personal involvement on mission trips to Liberia have made faith-based education possible for hundreds of children. Education of the Liberian children is necessary for the country s continued recovery from its past and for the children to escape poverty. This inspirational service will include wonderful anthems from our choir, readings from important documents on the church, and prophetic voices from across the centuries calling our country to live out its creed. In addition, we will have Fellowship at 10 a.m. in Grand Hall with coffee and breakfast foods. We encourage you to come early and enjoy the fellowship before worship. The completion of the upper level of the building will bring some changes in the location of offices and Sunday School classrooms. The changes will begin to take place in July. Sandee Edmondson, our receptionist, will move to the Portico Welcome Center to greet guests as they enter our building. Amy, Diane, Dale, Glenn, Joseph, and Rachel will move upstairs to the new office suite under construction! The Oak Grove Christian School will move its offices into the soon-to-be-renovated existing church offices, using the greeting area, the office behind the greeting area, Dale s office, and Joseph s office. The office occupied by Diane will become the acolyte room. The office occupied by Amy will become a worship storage room. The current Senior Pastor s office will become a church conference room for groups of 6 or fewer. The current acolyte room will become a vestry (robing room) for clergy and communion servers. Several adult Sunday School classes will relocate to new rooms, too. The Christian Fellowship, Discoverers, and Renn classes will move to the new wing. Sunday Download will move to the first floor of the children s wing. New Hope and Go Forth will stay in their current location, near their children. The new upper level also includes a larger prayer room and a boardroom for meetings of 20 or fewer people. The classrooms vacated by adult classes on the children s wings will receive new flooring and paint and become home to children s rooms for the church. The current office space of Oak Grove Children s School will be divided between facilities management storage (ceiling tiles, carpet tiles, light bulbs, etc.) in the director s office and storage for United Methodist Men in the front office of the Christian School. The print room will move to the new office work area, and the current room used for printing will become a children s Sunday School resource room. Offices of church employees will be in transition July 2-3, and 5-6. Movers will be assisting with relocating the offices. The office will remain open, though in transition. Christian Fellowship, Renn, and Discoverers will move to their new classrooms on July 8. Sunday Download will move on July 15. The Oak Grove Christian School will move into its new office space on July 16. The building committee reports that its next projects will include renovation of the sacristy, acolyte room, and children s classrooms. These projects are scheduled for completion by the end of Thank you to our building committee for its excellent management of the building program. It will be an awesome weekend full of powerful worship, off the wall activities, new friendships, games and fellowship. 57th Annual Oak Grove Barbecue: Saturday, October 20 The 57th annual Oak Grove United Methodist Men s Barbecue will be held on Saturday, October 20. Please put this date on your calendar now so you can plan your fall activities around this important church-wide time of food, fun, music, and fellowship. Last year, 4,785 meals were served and $29, was raised for church and mission projects at the 56th annual UMM Barbecue. This year we will have day-long music, including old time Bluegrass and Gospel outside in the tent on the Grand Lawn. The bake sale, craft sale, and book sale will again be a feature of this exciting day. Please tell your friends and neighbors who look forward each year to participating as we bring the community together. Tickets and volunteer information will be available in September. Salem Camp Meeting On Monday, July 16, Oak Grove will be taking a group to participate in Salem Camp Meeting. We will enjoy open air worship with great preaching and favorite hymns followed by a delicious southern cooking lunch served family style. Salem is located between Conyers and Covington, GA, and we will provide bus transportation to the event. Please register with Sandee Edmondson in the church office ( ). Everyone will need to complete the Medical/Permission form to ride the bus. The cost for the trip is $12, which covers lunch. For more information contact Amy Morgan (amorgan@ogumc.org).

This is one of Oak Grove s annual mission projects, and it benefits Heifer International, an organization dedicated to ending hunger by providing animals to people around the world, training them, and passing on the benefit to others. Your child obtains sponsors for their reading and the money goes toward providing needy people with the means to support themselves and their communities. Come by today, and let's get started on summer reading! Invite Someone to Oak Grove In the last 10 years, we have received 100 new members a year! Stop. Read that again! Praise the Lord. God is at work at Oak Grove. The key to new people coming to Oak Grove is your invitation. Casually mention Oak Grove in conversation once per week, then invite people to share in mission, in Bible study, and in worship. People are open to the sincere invitation of others they know and trust. Also, your presence is part of your witness, so be in worship at least three Sundays a month. This summer, the Nurture Committee is looking for volunteers to cook meals for church members in times of illness or grief. As part of Smart Lunch, Smart Kid, we want to make sure that children in our community have the food they need. For 8 more days this summer we will meet in Fellowship Hall at 10:30 a.m. to enjoy fellowship, refreshments, and a devotional. We will then make sandwiches and assemble 600 sack lunches. To sign up to make sandwiches and assemble lunches, simply choose from the dates above, add your name to the sign-up sheets in the Portico, or sign up via the church website ( You may also sign up by calling Sandee Edmondson in the church office ( ). Smart Lunch, Smart Kid is a great intergenerational service opportunity for individuals, families with children, and other groups. Oak Grove Senior Adult Ministry invites you to enjoy a Patriotic Celebration Concert For the 38th year, the RUMC Sanctuary choir and the 52-member Atlanta Wind Symphony will join forces to raise this inspiring musical tribute to our great nation, honoring her heritage of freedom, and the men and women who serve in the Armed Forces. Everyone is invited, although we do not recommend the concert for very young children. Tickets will be available in the church office beginning Monday, June 11. An Oak Grove bus will take passengers to the event for $3.00 per person. We depart from the church at 1:30 p.m., or you may wish to carpool with friends. Please remember to complete your medical form in advance of the event and indicate your mode of transportation. Buses will return to Oak Grove at approximately 5:30 p.m. Tickets are limited, so don t delay in registering.
