1 July 19, 2015 EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Vacationing To... During the summer months a common question I hear is, Where are you going for your vacation this summer? People are always surprised by my answer because our vacation destination is a bit unusual. Our destination last week was not the mountains or the beach. We didn t go to some exotic city or faraway place. We vacationed about 35 minutes east of here between Conyers and Covington at Salem Camp Meeting. At Camp Meeting I stayed in a small, roughly built cabin with plywood floors. I spent several hours each day sitting on hard wooden benches in a space with no air conditioning. Rather than eating out, we cooked our own meals and washed all the dishes by hand. Truly, by anyone s standards, this doesn t sound like the description of an ideal vacation. But for me it is. Don t get me wrong; I love vacations away as much as anyone. For most of us, when we think of vacation we envision a vacation from from responsibilities, from tasks, from the usual routine, and from our normal places. My vacation last week was not so much a vacation from as a vacation to. It was a vacation to friends who have become family for me. It was a vacation to worship, Bible Study, prayer and spiritual renewal. It was a vacation to family time without the distractions of technology. This time each year feeds my soul and refreshes my spirit in a way that a trip to the beach or the mountains (as wonderful as those are) cannot. We still have several weeks of summer left. What do you have planned? Are you going on a trip? Will you take a vacation from everything? I want to encourage you to also take a vacation to as well. You don t have to travel far away simply spend some extra time this summer in prayer, in Bible reading, and in worship. Carve out some time with family to do old fashioned things like making homemade ice cream and playing board games. Take time to capture the moments and memories that make life so precious. I m very thankful to be a part of the 187 year tradition that is Salem Camp Meeting, and for the vacation to faith, friends and family. I look forward to our tradition of worshipping together on Sunday!

4 OAK GROVE NEWS July 19, 2015 Called Charge Conference July 27, 2015 The Conference will begin at 7 p.m. in the church parlor to approve the final building and financing plans. Oak Grove Barbecue Has a New Date this Year Saturday, October 24 The 54th Annual Oak Grove United Methodist Men s Barbecue will be held on Saturday, October 24. Please put this date on your calendar now so that you can plan your fall activities around this important church-wide time of food, fun, music, and fellowship. Also note that this is a change from the traditional third Saturday to the fourth Saturday in October. This year the United Methodist Men are able to provide financial assistance to 31 different mission causes here at Oak Grove, in the community, and in the mission field from proceeds at the Barbecue last year. All of these projects are made possible as you buy and sell tickets and volunteer to work at this special event. Lunch Bunch Featuring the Georgia Voice for Seniors Chuck Ware Other Outstanding Senior Adults will also be introduced. Tuesday August 4, :30 a.m. Fellowship Hall Oak Grove UMC Charles Chuck Ware, 85, is a familiar face at the Georgia Capitol during the legislative session. He has lobbied for senior programs more than 20 years. He was honored as the Distinguished Older Georgian Award by the Georgia Council on Aging during Senior Week at the Capitol, Lunch Bunch reservations ($8) are required in advance and can be made in the church office or in an Oak Grove UMC Sunday School Class. January Honduras Mission Trip Our 2015 mission trip to the mainland of Honduras was such a success that we are going back again January 23-30, Now is the time to begin praying about being a part of this team, and saving money for the journey. The mainland team works alongside local residents to complete light construction projects and offer a Vacation Bible School experience for children. The cost for the trip will be $1900, but those who have sky miles may be able to cut their cost significantly by buying tickets with sky miles. 5 Covenant Groups are small groups of 8-10 people who meet in homes throughout the school year for study, discipleship, and fellowship. Groups are comprised of either women, men, couples, or mixed groups and will meet at varying times throughout the week. For questions, contact Rev. Susan Allen Grady or Jessica Bandy Scott Bazemore Covenant Group Member covenant groups Will Start Back in August Leading and participating in a Covenant Group has been a special experience for me. It all started when I selfishly wanted to be in a Bible study with friends and neighbors and had been searching for such a group. After prayerful consideration, I felt that maybe God wanted me to be the catalyst rather than waiting for someone to ask me to join a group. Funny thing how sometimes God wants us to be the answer to our own prayers. After volunteering to lead a group, I started inviting friends and neighbors in person and through but trying not to be a pest. It seemed like other men wanted to be in a group with friends and neighbors just like me and we were able to establish a group. We opened it up to others inside OGUMC and outside of OGUMC which gave all of us an opportunity to make new friends. Because my group is all men we decided to meet weekly since some people travel for work and missing one week won't throw you off too much. We also decided to study the Bible and cover one chapter per week which is not too much to cover. Consistency over time has allowed the group to cover four books of the New Testament along with Mere Christianity and The Case for Christ. Through this experience my own Bible knowledge has grown and my faith has been strengthened and friendships expanded. Register and Donate NOW! Isaiah 30:21 Year-Round Wednesday Communion Each Wednesday evening a Communion service takes place in the Parlor at 5 p.m. This 30-minute service includes music, scripture reading, a short sermon, and Holy Communion. This service continues throughout the summer and all year long. Reservations are required for nursery care. Contact Tricia Fazio (tfazio@ogumc.org) by Monday prior to the Wednesday you will need nursery care during Wednesday Communion. Do you speak Spanish? Are you interested in teaching English as a second language? Do you want to work with the Montclair Elementary School children? Over the past two years our church has supported Montclair Elementary School by providing Blessing Bags every week and through teacher appreciation events sponsored by our UMW. We have also had various drives to support the needs of the families of Montclair. In the fall, we will begin a Friday after school program sharing stories from the Bible and teaching the children about who Jesus Christ is in our lives. Although the children speak English, only 2% of their parents can speak or understand English. We are looking for people that can carry on conversations in Spanish for an open house at the school on August 5. We are also looking for anyone who is interested in teaching English as a second language (ESL) to the parents of Montclair students and for people who would like to work with the children once a month in the after school program. Our plan is to have four teams for the after school program, each team serving one Friday per month.
