2 Traditional Worship 8:15 am Sanctuary (upper level) GREETING Please fill out the registration pad and pass it down the aisle. When it gets to the end, please pass it back to the inside aisle, leaving open. Rev. Parker Benson PRELUDE SCRIPTURE READING Selected Psalms I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD. As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. My soul thirsts for you like a parched land. Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; Let all who take refuge in you be glad. 7 The Appalachian Trail Chaplaincy is a ministry of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church in which a chaplain is commissioned each year to hike the entire 2185 mile trail. The chaplain is there to offer spiritual strength, comfort, and encouragement to fellow hikers. 1st UMC s own Bert Emmerson, whose trail name is Wildcat, is the current Trail Chaplain. Bert is thru-hiking the Trail. Instead of taking the most popular South-to-North route, he chose to start in Maine and head south to Georgia. Since June, he has hiked through 6 states and started his 7th on Wednesday, September 16. When Bert was asked about why he wanted to serve as the Appalachian Trail Chaplain this year he said, I am looking forward to meeting the people and serving the church. I learned in 2004 (when he hiked the AT for the first time) that the most important thing about the Trail is the people both the hikers and the people in the communities along the Trail. In addition to that, I enjoy being out of doors in all kinds of weather that s where I feel closest to God. When Bert gets closer to Tennessee and in the Smoky Mountains, there will be opportunities for folks from 1st UMC to meet him for a meal or do a day hike. In the meantime, please continue to pray for Bert and his ministry to people along the Appalachian Trail. You can follow Bert s progress at: or (Click on 2015 AT in the blue menu on the left hand side)

8 Closing hymn for Traditional Services UPCOMING TRIPS Trip to Carver s Orchard in Cosby, TN Tuesday, September 29th - Leave the church at 9:00 am It s apple time in East Tennessee and what better place to enjoy the harvest than Carver s Orchard in the Smoky Mountains.
