1 July 15, 2018 EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Love Your Enemies It s Extremely Difficult Jesus and I get crossed up at times. There are things he said with which I struggle. Enemies is one of the topics where he and I have different views. I need enemies. It helps me maintain my oversimplified world of black and white. Either they are my friend or my enemy. But Jesus says I am to love my enemies. A teaching to tolerate the intolerable would be tolerable, but to love them seems extreme. I could probably find room in my heart to forgive them provided I get to define forgiveness in such a way that it does not expect too much of me or require a measurable level of discomfort. But Jesus says to love my enemies. If you are expecting a tidy resolution to the dilemma within the ~274 words on this page, you will be disappointed. The human need for enemies is too complex, and the radical notion of loving enemies can be insufferable. If Jesus would have moderated his views, it would be easier. If Jesus would have advocated for tolerance rather than love, for forgetting rather than forgiving, for civility rather than mercy, for fairness rather than grace, then it would be much easier to be a Christian. I can be tolerant and civil and fair, but to be loving, merciful, and grace-filled is much more difficult. Then again, Jesus was never one for moderation. He was extreme in his love. He was extreme in his grace. His crucifixion was extreme. His Resurrection was extreme. And his teaching to love our enemies is extreme. It is an extremely difficult teaching.
2 8:30 and 11 a.m. ORDER OF WORSHIP July 15, 2018 Eighth Sunday after Pentecost Gathering Music Adagio in D Minor Bach-Vivaldi Mr. Scott Morris, Guest Organist Welcome and Announcements (Please complete and pass the red friendship pad at this time) Dr. Glenn Ethridge *Hymn of Praise Love Divine, All Loves Excelling UMH 384 *Affirmation of Faith 1 Corinthians 15:1-6 and Colossians 1:15-20 Dr. Joseph McBrayer This is the good news which we have received, in which we stand, and by which we are saved: Christ died for our sins, was buried, was raised on the third day, and appeared first to the women, then to Peter and the Twelve, and then to many faithful witnesses. We believe Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One of God, the firstborn of all creation, the firstborn from the dead, in whom all things hold together, in whom the fullness of God was pleased to dwell by the power of the Spirit. Christ is the head of the body, the church, and by the blood of the cross reconciles all things to God. Amen. A Morning Prayer and The Lord s Prayer Dr. McBrayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Mission Moment Ms. Helen Roberts-Evans Missionary to Liberia Our Tithes & Offerings (8:30) How Firm a Foundation from American Folk Hymn Suite for Organ Michael Burkhardt (11:00) My Shepherd Will Supply My Need Ms. Susan Hodges, Soprano; Mr. Randy Thrower, Baritone My Shepherd will supply my need; Jehovah is His name. In pastures fresh He makes me feed beside the living stream. He brings my wandering spirit back when I forsake His ways, and leads me, for His mercy s sake, in paths of truth and grace. When I walk through the shades of death, Thy presence is my stay; A word of Thy supporting breath drives all my fears away. Thy hand, insight of all my foes, doth still my table spread; My cup with blessings overflows; Thine oil anoints my head. The sure provisions of my God attend me all my days; O may Thy house be mine abode, and all my work be praise! There would I find a settled rest while others go and come; No more a stranger or a guest, but like a child at home.

Sermon Upside Down: Dr. Ethridge Love-Enemies *Sending Hymn Beams of Heaven As I Go UMH 524 (Those who wish to join the church are invited to come forward.) Charles Tindley wrote Beams of Heaven As I Go in Born in Maryland 1851, his father was a slave, and his mother was free. His mother died young, and his aunt took him in to preserve his freedom. Tindley was largely self-taught. He moved to Philadelphia in 1875 and took correspondence courses toward becoming a Methodist minister while working as a church janitor. He served a series of small churches. In 1904, he returned to the church where he had served as janitor. Twenty years later the church moved to the eponymously named Tindley Temple, where membership grew to about 10,000. His hymns and sermons reflect the challenges of earthly life, a commitment to peace, and a deep faith in God s deliverance. *Benediction Dr. Ethridge *Postlude Festive Trumpet Tune David German *Congregation stand as able. UMH: United Methodist Hymnal / TFWS: The Faith We Sing Large print hymnals and bulletins and hearing assistance devices are available from an usher.
