1 September 17, th Annual Oak Grove United Methodist Men Saturday, October 21, :00 am 6:00 pm FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST As I looked on the internet about what has happened over the last 56 years since the Oak Grove Barbecue began, my attention seemed to be drawn to the advances in technology that have occurred: the ATM machine, cell phones, personal computers, and GPS. It is remarkable what the human mind can conceive and bring to reality. All these things have made our lives easier, more accessible, and more efficient. And yet 56 years later we still have suffering, we still have a great need for food banks, rescue missions, and refugee centers to provide basic necessities to those in need. Our basic God-given skills are the ones that truly enhance the lives of those around us. Whether it s the strength to flip 300 hams, stir 520 gallons of stew, or being able to stand on your feet for hours serving in a take-out line, THAT makes a difference in the lives which need it most. The greatest Inventor of all gave us the technology we need, all bundled up in skin, to make us effective in His way. Come be a part of the 500 or so volunteers who will make a difference in the world using the unique technology God gave each of us to support missions such as C4C, Toco Hills Community Food Bank, our own United Methodist Youth Fellowship programs, and 20+ other missions. Be on the lookout for your tickets in the mail and for the sign-up so that you can get involved. If you need additional tickets, please stop by the church or contact Clayton Webster ( ). When we began the project, we promised that the residual debt would not exceed $1.8 million. If people give generously, we believe we can reduce the residual debt by even more. If giving matched what people gave in the first three year campaign, then we would be debt-free at the end of this campaign! Coxe Curry is working with us again to help us have a successful capital stewardship campaign. We invite and encourage broad participation and sacrificial giving. Addressing the needs of our membership is critical to the church and ultimately meets our ministry goals. Finishing our building program will improve spaces for our children, provide accessible entrances, resolve long standing critical maintenance issues, and provide improvements to sacred spaces! September 24, 2017 On Sunday, September 24, we will observe Warm-up Sunday at Oak Grove. Health experts report that even a small drop in body temperature results in reduced heart rate, loss of coordination, and confusion. Adults cannot work effectively and children find it difficult to learn. For most, a warm coat solves the problem. But for many people in our community, a warm winter coat is a budget extra. You are invited to donate new or gently used warm clothing or blankets in good condition to help alleviate this need. The items of clothing can include coats, jackets, sweaters, gloves, caps, scarves, etc. These may be brought to the church on Sunday, September 24, and placed in one of the bins before worship services. For those who cannot be in worship on September 24, a bin is available in the portico commons where items can be left in advance. Deliver Flowers We are looking for a few people to deliver flowers left from Sunday worship to individuals and care facilities. This is an easy way to brighten someone s day. Drama Ministry Auditions September 17, 2 p.m. We will audition for our November production of A Sanders Family Christmas on Sunday, September 17, at 2 p.m. This show is the sequel to Smoke on the Mountain and contains lots of wonderful Christmas gospel music. In addition to reading from the script, please come prepared to sing a verse of your favorite gospel-type hymn. Rehearsals will begin September 26, and run Tuesday/Thursday evenings and most Saturday mornings. Performance dates are November 16, 17, and 18. All are welcome and encouraged to audition.
