1 June 12, 2016 FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Making Disciples, Transforming the World The mission statement of the United Methodist Church is to "make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world." I like that we have a mission that is the same no matter where in the world United Methodists come together. I like that it is action-oriented: making disciples, transforming the world. One of the most effective ways that the United Methodist Church has done this for the past 29 years is through Disciple Bible Study. Disciple's tag line is also action-oriented: "Search scripture..find community." I have told the story several times of the young woman who joined the church I where I was pastor in Austell, Georgia, and a few weeks later joined Disciple 1: Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study. About halfway through the year together, she told our group: "I've never been in a Bible study like this before. You don't tell me what I'm supposed to think about scripture. You help me form my own opinions." It was a moment of transformation for the young graduate student in bio-medical engineering from Georgia Tech. She was asked to be transformed, to become a disciple of Jesus Christ, and to join in a true, real, deeply committed community of believers whose lives were all being changed just by spending a couple of hours together every week for 9 months. Watching her grow, watching the others in the group grow because of her was a transformative experience for me, too. It solidified my commitment to Disciple Bible Study. If you are a graduate of Disciple, you know what I am talking about. Your life has been transformed. You really have become a Disciple of Jesus Christ through Bible study. Today we celebrate those who have completed a year of Disciple Bible Study. The 40 people we recognize today have met weekly with other Disciples to search and study scripture, and in doing so they have found community. There are people in our congregation and countless others who have discovered life-long friendships through Disciple or who have discerned a call to ordained ministry. It is not for the faint of heart or commitment; it IS for those who are interested in becoming Disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Is that you? Have you been looking for an in-depth Bible study? Have you been looking for a way to know God more fully and to study God's work with others in a way that will change your life? Look no further; this is it. New Disciple classes will form this fall. If you'd like to know more, I would love to talk with you about this life-changing experience. Congratulations, Disciple graduates! I look forward to seeing the ways that you get out there and transform the world as Disciples of Jesus Christ.

Building Program Makes Loan Draw Oak Grove made its first draw against the construction loan in May The congregation has been remarkably generous in giving to the Building Program, and those pledging have been making their gifts early. This has allowed the church to complete a major portion of the construction project with no debt. Thank you for your faithful giving. The Georgia United Methodist Foundation is Oak Grove s source of loan funds. This sister organization of Oak Grove offered us a low rate, exceptional terms, and enormous flexibility. The Georgia United Methodist Foundation loans money to churches, donates scholarship funds to United Methodist students attending United Methodist colleges, manages investment funds for United Methodist churches, including Oak Grove, and provides opportunities for individuals to invest. You can invest in a certificate. The current rate is 2% for a three year term. January Honduras Mission Trip Plan now to participate in the January mission trip to Honduras. Participants will do light construction and a day of VBS activities. Dates for the trip are January 21 28, The cost will be approximately $1600 per person.
