1 November 9, 2014 LAITY SUNDAY Laity Sunday Disciples Called to Action Today is Laity Sunday, a day the United Methodist Church sets aside each year to celebrate and recognize the work and ministry of all Christians. Laity Sunday is a special day that invites lay people of all ages to pause and consider again their own unique call to disciple in carrying out the mission to make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The first recorded observance of Laity Sunday was in the Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1929 called "Laymen s Day." In the 1972 edition of the The Book of Discipline, Laymen s Day was renamed to the genderneutral Laity Sunday. On Laity Sunday, lay people help plan and participate in the worship services. I believe Laity Sunday is also a day for the congregation to give thanks to the clergy and staff, and at Oak Grove UMC, we are incredibly blessed to have a phenomenal team of gifted clergy and a dedicated caring staff. The theme for this year s Laity Sunday is Disciples Called to Action through Invitation, Discipleship and Service. This theme reflects the three areas of emphases at Oak Grove UMC, where all three work together as a continuous, never-ending loop. As we are invited to enter into discipleship and called into service as Christ s hands and feet in the world, we are then led to invite others to experience the saving grace of Jesus Christ and a life called to discipleship and service. Through this circle, we disciple by sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ! Together, we find community with one another and experience the presence of the Holy Spirit as we worship and fellowship as the body of Christ. The worship service today is designed around these three areas, highlighting the life-changing ministries within each area and a call to action to each of us to consider how God is calling us to a deeper relationship and to a life of service and compassion for others. My prayer for today is this: may our hearts be strangely warmed as the Holy Spirit moves in each of us and all together as the body of Christ to be the city on a hill so that our light may shine and glorify God! May God s grace and peace be with you always. Cathy Huffines Lay Leader

5 Representatives of the Building Committee have been meeting with architects, engineers and builders trying to define a timeline for construction of the new building. Our positive experience with fundraising has allowed us to consider breaking ground earlier than previously discussed, provided we can get appropriate permitting from DeKalb County. Central to the permitting process is storm water retention. Preliminary indications from our architects and engineers suggest that Oak Grove may need to vacate the existing youth building sooner than expected to address temporary and permanent storm water retention. Representatives of the Building Committee have already met with leaders of the youth ministry to notify them of the situation so they can look at their options. Our youth ministry team is working on a contingency plan for the youth ministry if we must demolish the youth building earlier than expected. The Building Committee has worked hard to maintain transparency throughout the process through articles, town hall meetings and . The committee knows to expect the unexpected, and it will keep you informed of significant changes. Mr. Ed Kallal, Chair of the Building Committee OAK GROVE Building Update Dr. Glenn Ethridge, Senior Pastor United Methodist Men Barbecue Proceeds Meeting: Sunday, Nov. 23, 12:15 p.m. The United Methodist Men (UMM) will host a meeting on Sunday, November 23, at 12:15 p.m. in room 217 to discuss allocation of the proceeds from the recent UMM barbecue. All church members and staff are invited to make presentations. Written requests will also be accepted and should be submitted to the UMM by Monday, November 17. The UMM invites the entire church to participate, as you all helped raise this money by buying and selling tickets, in addition to donating your time and energy working at the event. The UMM would like to thank everyone who participated in this year's barbecue, an event of service and fellowship. Short-term Study Opportunity, November 9! The Christian Fellowship Class invites anyone interested in a one-week study on the Great Flood to join us Sunday morning, November 9. The session will review recent oceanographic and archeological evidence of a catastrophic flood circa 5,500 BCE in the late ice-age Black Sea basin, roughly corresponding to the Hebrew and Samarian stories of a great flood. The Sunday morning session begins at 9:45 a.m. in room 212. Advent Study Starting November 30 This year s Advent Study is on the book, Incarnation: The Surprising Overlap of Heaven and Earth by Bishop William H. Willimon. Incarnation asks us to explore what it means for God to come close to us in the person of Jesus. Classes will meet on Sundays, November 30 through December 21 from 2 to 3 p.m. in room 217. Participants will purchase their own copies of the book. To sign up, contact Rev. Susan Allen Grady (sallengrady@ogumc.org, , ext. 212).
