1 August 6, 2017 Let s Turn Hunger into Hope NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Have you ever experienced a moment in your life where things just seemed a little bit clearer for no apparent reason? Maybe it s a sudden peace that washes over you in a difficult time, or maybe you notice a favorable coincidence that s too perfect to be truly random. Even if it s just for a second, we know in these moments that something greater than ourselves has touched our lives and afforded us the opportunity to take notice and make a lasting change for the better. I believe these moments are God-Moments, living examples of God s promise that He is always with us, constantly acting in our lives. In 2015, right here at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, I experienced a God-Moment of my own when my family participated in the church s inaugural Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack event. We didn t know quite what to expect when we arrived that morning, but there were dozens of tables set up throughout Fellowship Hall, loud music was blaring from a stereo, and people ages 5 to 105 were working together, laughing, wearing goofy hairnets, and having fun packing specifically formulated meals of rice, soy, vegetables, and vitamins to send to starving children around the world. Everything was so organized and efficient and when we finished our two-hour shift, the FMSC staff showed us a video of the actual impact the meals we had just packed would have on God s children around the globe! It was transformative, and I left that day with a full heart and a promise to find out more about FMSC. Here is what I discovered. First, the bad news. Each and every day, over 6,200 children die from undernutrition around the world, and those who do manage to survive experience stunted growth because if children don t receive proper nutrition during their first years of life, they often suffer long-lasting physical and cognitive damage. In fact, more children die each year from undernutrition than from AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined. It is difficult for us to contemplate the reality of starving children, given the abundance we enjoy in this great country, but it is a sad reality nonetheless. The need is very real. Now the good news! Last year alone, FMSC packed over 284 million meals, using over 1 million volunteers, enough to feed 779,074 children every day for a full year! FMSC offers volunteers ages 5 and up a unique opportunity to make a real and lasting difference in just two hours by hand-packing meals into bags which are then sealed, boxed, placed on pallets, and shipped to the neediest children around the world. FMSC is also extremely efficient, with 99.8% of all meals securely delivered to their intended recipients and over 90% of all monetary donations spent directly on feeding programs. God is good! MOBILEPACK SATURDAY, AUGUST 19 I urge you to give generously of your time and resources in support of Oak Grove s FMSC event on August 19. You will have a great time, potentially experience your own God-Moment, and leave knowing that you truly made a difference. John Burgess

4 OAK GROVE NEWS August 6, 2017 Back to School Sunday August 13 Vacation is over. The kids are in school. Traffic is back, and it s time to come home to Oak Grove. 8:30 9:35 11:00 Great Music, Preaching, and Worship Travel with the Prodigal Son as we journey through his life when enough wasn t enough. In his wild days he tried to find enough before he learned that home is all you ever need. Building Program Includes More Green Space When we built the new building, we lost most of our available grassy outdoor gathering areas. The next portion of the building program calls for creating a fenced green space on the lot where the former Kid s Clubhouse stood, just north of the church parking lot. Our youth are currently resigned to playing outdoor games on parking lot asphalt, and children have little space appropriate for outdoor play. By creating the new green space, we will have a safe area for children, youth, Scouts, and even churchwide picnics. The area will be fenced and include shaded green areas. Adjacent to the green space, we will add 25 parking spaces between the green space and the existing parking lot. This plan allows us to address the drainage problem we have in the area to redirect water into appropriate storm water areas. The new building plans will significantly improve our ministry to children, youth, and adults by increasing parking and creating safe green space. This space will be home to outdoor events for Scouts, youth, children, Oak Grove Christian School, church picnics, and community gatherings. It will be one of the favorite gathering places for children, youth, and adults. Covenant Group Event: Sunday, August 27 Thinking of joining a covenant group? Covenant groups are small groups that meet weekly, biweekly, or monthly to connect socially, pray for one another, and discuss a book of the Bible or other book together. Covenant groups are a great way to connect more often and grow in relationships with others at Oak Grove. The Find Your Connection Event will take place on August 27, before and after the 9:35 service in Fellowship Hall. Come by to get information and/or sign up to join an existing covenant group or new covenant group. Dusty Schaffner (dlschaffner@gmail.com) for more info, or just show up on the 27th. Hope to see you there! Pictorial Directory We are getting ready to create a new photo directory and we need you to help make it complete! Our directory will showcase our families, provide contact information, and become a useful resource to keep us connected. By participating, you will receive a printed and electronic version of the new directory. Sign up online ( for you and your family to have professional portraits made for the new directory. Our portrait dates are: September 5 9; Sept ; and Sept Wesley Heritage Trip to England April 2 12, 2018 Glenn Ethridge will be leading a trip to England April 2-12, There will be an informational meeting for people interested in learning more about the trip on Sunday, August 20, at 4 p.m. in Room 102. Anyone interested in learning about the trip is welcome. The trip is open to all happy travelers regardless of relationship with Oak Grove. The trip includes traditional tourist sites in addition to visits to important sites for John Wesley, Charles Wesley, and the Methodism. Accommodations are always at first class hotels, and transportation within England is by deluxe motor coach. Many of the meals are included, and the trip includes some free time in London. This trip is not as walking intensive as others, but all travelers must be mobile to enjoy the trip fully.

Update on Read-to-Feed Program The Library Committee wishes to thank the Christian Fellowship class for a $500 donation to Read-to-Feed. An anonymous member made the contribution on behalf of the class with the intent to challenge other Sunday School classes to match the contribution or to make a contribution of any size to the program. Donations of this size are not a new idea and are greatly appreciated. It turns out that for many years the Seekers class has collected quarters all year so they can make an annual $500 contribution to the program. Other classes also have been making contributions in varying amounts. We thank all classes for their continued support of this worthy cause. Children continue reading and will be collecting their pledges through August. Once all funds have been collected from the children and any others who choose to contribute, we will announce the total. It takes $5000 to buy an ark, a feat we have not accomplished in some time. Nevertheless, to our knowledge Oak Grove remains the biggest supporter of this program in the conference. 8 Your opportunity for small group Bible study in community is coming this fall! Disciple Bible study is still the #1 choice for in-depth Bible study. Disciple helps you search scripture in community as you find meaning for your life together with other disciples. Below are your choices for participating in Disciple this fall: Disciple 1: Becoming Disciples through Bible Study (pre-requisite for other Disciple studies) a 34-week overview of the entire Bible study gives the Old and New Testaments equal time, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as a revelation of God draws upon the work of scholars, the personal Bible reading and study of the participant, and dynamic group discussion to aid understanding of the Bible participant book: $44 Sundays, 5:30-7:30 p.m., starting September 10, Joy Trotti facilitating Tuesdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m., starting Sept. 12, Stephanie Byrne and Leslie McBee facilitating Disciple 1 x 2 meets every other week on Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m., starting September 13, Ruth Primm facilitating Disciple 2: Into the Word, Into the World a 32-week study proclaims the transforming power of Scripture while teaching Bible study skills that take participants deeper into the Scripture keeping Bible study related to witness is reinforced while participants are encouraged to practice spiritual disciplines arising out of Scripture for the purpose of changing habits and transforming lives Participant book: $44 Sundays, 5:30-7:30 p.m., starting September 11, Cliff Howard facilitating Disciple 3: Remember Who You Are a 32-week study of the major and minor Old Testament prophets, with the exception of Daniel, and the 13 Letters traditionally attributed to Paul. Testimonials from Disciple Bible Study Facilitators In my first Disciple class 25 years ago, we gave names and one statement about ourselves. I said, "I am Leslie Mcbee and I hate Bible Study." Raised as a Methodist, my own experience with Bible study had been excruciatingly boring. Ill prepared Sunday school teachers sometimes pushed personal agendas with no discussion, and study was anything but alive and challenging. Disciple Study is different. Experiencing the Bible as one message (with experts in language, history, and archaeology) I discovered a living document. My own journey now has a plan desperately needed in unsure times and circumstances. Study takes time... but what time do we "have?" I pray you feel called as an apprentice/ disciple, and will arrange your schedule for time to understand what God calls us to hear. Leslie McBee Disciple Bible Study is an important part of my life. I am busy with work travel and my share of three kids worth of activities but I have learned that every aspect of my life is better when I prioritize Bible study and daily reading. Getting to know a group of Christians through our common faith strengthens my own faith and hopefully helps strengthen theirs. The Bible is an amazing gift to all of us. It can be challenging, but it is also helpful to have a team of friends and the Disciple resources to help reach understanding. This will be my seventh straight year of Disciple and I plan to continue. Mark Byrne
