1 January 29, 2017 FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY The Church s Ministry The church struggles at times to remember that it is the public face of the life and witness of Jesus Christ. On a practical level we worship, and we teach the faith. These are important aspects of our ministry, but they do not reflect the totality of the ministry of Jesus. In fact, one of the largest parts of Jesus ministry was his prophetic ministry. In Jesus s prophetic ministry, he confronted the self-righteous, the politically powerful, the religiously powerful, and he embraced the socially ostracized, the poor, the sick, and the disenfranchised. This was no small part of who Jesus was and how he spent his time. The prophetic ministry of the church can be difficult, and historically the church shies away from its prophetic witness because it can be controversial. When women wanted the right to vote, many in the church opposed the women s suffrage movement, so churches fell silent rather than advocate for full equality for women. Parts of the church were silent or even complicit during this nation s civil rights crisis, because not everyone in the church agreed. In both cases, we can see in hindsight that the moral voice of the church was compromised. In the stories of Jesus we find Jesus among ritually unclean, the publicly despised, and the forgotten. When he encounters the well-connected folks of his day, his words are harsh white-washed tombs and brood of vipers. Jesus s ministry was consistent with the witness of the old testament prophets who also advocated for fair treatment of all, especially the poor and powerless. Like Jesus, the prophets were often despised because of their words. The moral voice of the church centers on compassion and care for people. Like Jesus, we embrace the least, the lost, and the lonely. The church is one of the few places in our society where the moral voice has priority. Our job is not to manage governmental affairs or promote commerce or economic development. Citizens elect a government to manage these essential political affairs, and in our country we just went through another peaceful change of power in government, no small event in the context of world history. Church and governmental powers are appropriately separated. The government will make rules, and the church will use its moral voice to advocate for care and compassion of people. We raise our voice to affirm the sacred worth of all human beings, the fair treatment of all of God s children, and respect of human rights. It was what Jesus did, and it is what we, as the church, are called to do.

2 8:30 and 11 a.m. ORDER OF WORSHIP January 29, 2017 Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany Gathering Music O Christ, the Healer arr. J. S. Bach Welcome and Announcements (Please complete and pass the red friendship pad at this time.) Dr. Glenn Ethridge Call to Worship Matthew 8:18-22 Rev. Susan Allen Grady *Hymn of Praise Great is Thy Faithfulness UMH 140 *The World Methodist Social Affirmation UMH 886 Rev. Allen Grady We believe in God, creator of the world and of all people; and in Jesus Christ, incarnate among us, who died and rose again; and in the Holy Spirit, present with us to guide, strengthen, and comfort. We believe; God, help our unbelief. We rejoice in every sign of God s kingdom: in the upholding of human dignity and community; in every expression of love, justice, and reconciliation; in each act of self-giving on behalf of others; in the abundance of God s gifts entrusted to us that all may have enough; in all responsible use of the earth s resources. Glory be to God on high; and on earth, peace. We confess our sin, individual and collective, by silence or action: through the violation of human dignity based on race, class, age, sex, nation, or faith; through the exploitation of people because of greed and indifference; through the misuse of power in personal, communal, national, and international life; through the search for security by those military and economic forces that threaten human existence; through the abuse of technology which endangers the earth and all life upon it. Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy. We commit ourselves individually and as a community to the way of Christ: to take up the cross; to seek abundant life for all humanity; to struggle for peace with justice and freedom; to risk ourselves in faith, hope, and love, praying that God s kingdom may come. Thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. Amen. A Morning Prayer and The Lord s Prayer Rev. Allen Grady Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Sacrament of Holy Baptism (11:00) Dr. Ethridge Declan Stewart Marshall Whittington, son of Megan and Josh Whittington Rev. Andrea McGinty Rice Congregational Pledge With God s help, we will so order our lives after the example of Christ, that Declan, surrounded by steadfast love, may be established in the faith, and confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to life eternal. God Claims You TFWS 2249 Declan, Declan, God claims you, God helps you, protects you, and loves you, too. We this day do all agree a child of God you ll always be. 4 OAK GROVE NEWS January 29, 2017 Souper Bowl of Caring February 5 Hunger Walk 2017 Oak Grove is participating in the Hunger Walk on March 5. Your walk registration fee and/or donations help support the Toco Hills Community Alliance. The Toco Hills Community Alliance provides food and utility assistance to qualifying individuals living in 15 zip codes within the Atlanta area. One of the beautiful traditions of Oak Grove UMC is helping those who are in need. This year s collection will go to help with the feeding of the refugees in Clarkston through our C4C (Caring for Clarkston) ministries. We will have Confirmands standing at the entrances at 8:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 11 a.m. holding large soup pots. All you have to do is put money in the soup pots to help those in need. Please make checks payable to OGUMC, and write Souper Bowl on the memo line. Our goal this year is to raise $5,000. If each of the organizations supporting THCA raise that much, that would take care of expenses for a year! We would love to have you join our team on the walk, but if you cannot make it to the walk, we would love your support with a donation to the team. For each donation made, we will put a walking "footprint" with your family's name along the hallway outside of the parlor. If you would like to make a donation online, you can go to our Hunger Walk team page ( for the link.) If you have any questions, please contact Carrie Davis (carrieedavis@gmail.com or ).
