1 March 26, 2017 FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT S P R I N G He said to them, Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while. For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. (Matt. 6:31) I can remember watching the church van leave for a youth retreat when I was in about the fourth or fifth grade, longing to be on it. My older sister was on it, and all of the youth riding away looked so happy and excited for whatever adventure was coming next. As a child, I could only imagine all the fun, laughter, and cool things that one could experience going on a retreat. I did not think much about what the word actually means. As I grew older and started going on retreats with the church, I began to understand what is the core of this kind of getaway: to connect with others and reconnect with God. This weekend, 15 families from Oak Grove are on retreat. We are hiking, praying, making s mores, listening to each other, and connecting with God through building relationships within our church community. Some have already been friends for years. Some have never met before this retreat. Some have children; others do not. There is something special about being in a different setting, away from the busy world and lives we live, and setting aside time to sit and talk, play, and rest. Jesus called his disciples to a time of rest because they did not even have enough time for proper meals. Many were coming and going, says the verse from Matthew 6. I can relate to that feeling, for in my own household, I feel like the three of us are quite often coming and going, passing at the doorway, rushing off in the morning with a half-report of what our calendars hold in store. We rely on time away together to rest and to reconnect with each other in simple ways. The church community must do this, too. Following Jesus is hard work. It is why the church exists: so that when we give our lives to Christ and discover how hard it is to keep his commandments, we can find strength and help to live as God desires. At the Church Retreat, we are learning about our spiritual types, what speaks to us and why, and how we can learn from each other. We are singing camp songs around the fire, and we will worship with you at a distance, welcoming all ages and spiritual types into one hour of song, prayer, and holy communion. We are answering Christ s call to us to come away and rest. In the culture of busy-ness in which we live, don t pass up any opportunity to rest in God s love and care for you. It will make you stronger, courageous, and centered on the most important thing you can know and receive: God s love for you and the world. Grace and peace to you, sisters and brothers, from the beautiful North Georgia mountains!

2 8:30 and 11 a.m. ORDER OF WORSHIP March 26, 2017 Fourth Sunday in Lent Gathering Music Jesus, Lover of My Soul arr. Raymond H. Haan Tune: Aberystwyth Welcome and Announcements (Please complete and pass the red friendship pad at this time.) Dr. Glenn Ethridge *Hymn of Praise How Firm a Foundation UMH 529 *Lighting the Lenten Candles We stand firm together in the truth of Christ, though the world rejects his truth and his love. On account of the name of Jesus, the world may hate us. His goodness sheds light on our sin, and we cannot accept his light. The prophets promised we would hate him, yet his works of mercy have reminded us that love is stronger than hate. We light this candle to illuminate the last words of Jesus. We stand together in the mercy of Christ; when the world has no love for us, his mercy will sustain us forever. Dr. Amy Morgan Call to Prayer Breathe on Me, Breath of God UMH 420 Breathe on me, Breath of God, fill me with life anew, that I may love what thou dost love, and do what thou wouldst do. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. 5 Oak Grove Memorials IN HONOR TO THE MEMORIAL FUND IN HONOR OF Blackie Scott Neese s 90th birthday by Jack & Rigby Duncan Screenagers Movie Sunday, March 26, 5:30 p.m., Grand Hall Parents and youth 5th grade and older are welcome to attend. The film lasts about one hour and will be followed by some discussion. Are you watching kids scroll through life with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time. In Screenagers, Delaney probes into the vulnerable corners of family life to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics, and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, Screenagers reveals how tech time impacts kids development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.
