1 October 5, 2014 WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY We Are in This Together Last Sunday in the sermon, I said that we are all in this together. This includes the church, the building program, life, the community, and most anything else you can conceive. We are in it together, and we need one another to be our best. On Sunday, we launch the public phase of our stewardship campaign for the ministry budget, A Firm Foundation, and our capital campaign for the new building, Deep Roots New Growth. During worship Sunday, we will show the campaign video, then we will announce the total pledged to our capital campaign to date. I promise that you will be inspired. The ministry budget campaign provides the foundation of our operations. Our ministry budget funds Sunday school, choirs, worship, staffing, maintenance, Bible studies and more. You will be asked to make a one-year financial commitment to our ministry budget, and you will have the opportunity to volunteer to serve in ministry in the church at Oak Grove. A Firm Foundation gives us a chance to live out our commitment to support the church with prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness. The capital stewardship campaign is special this year. We will give thanks for the building that we have inherited from prior generations, and we will build a new building as our gift to future generations. Your contribution to the capital campaign should be over and above your pledge to the ministry budget. Your pledge to Deep Roots New Growth can be paid in 2015, 2016, and We encourage you to pay early, as you are able, to help reduce interest expense. Appropriate to the theme of we are all in this together, Sunday is also World Communion Sunday. We are part of a world church spanning geography, culture, and socio-economics. We are the church of Jesus Christ, and throughout Sunday, October 5, Christians will receive communion in recognition of our unity under the Lordship of Christ. Since we are in this together, I hope you will be present in worship October 5, 12, and 19 as we move through these important and significant days in the life of our church. You will want to be a part of making history at Oak Grove. We need you, because your participation helps others. We need you, because your gifts, when added to the gifts of others, make our goals attainable. We need you, because your presence represents your supportive voice for the work God is doing at Oak Grove. Thank you for being the church, Oak Grove. Thank you for being visionary, compassionate, and forever committed to becoming and making disciples of Jesus Christ and serving the poor with compassion.

The table belongs to God, so all are welcome. There is a mobile station for worshipers who prefer to be served in their seats. If you prefer gluten-free elements, please go to the station to the left of the pulpit. You are always welcome to choose any station by simply walking to the station of your choice. Once you receive the bread, please dip it in the grape juice in the chalice. In our tradition worshipers do not drink from the chalice. 4 OAK GROVE NEWS October 5, 2014 Deep Roots New Growth Celebration Sunday One Service October 19, :30 a.m. Worship on Sunday, October 19 will be a grand celebration marking an important landmark in the life of the congregation. On that Sunday, we will celebrate Deep Roots New Growth (capital campaign) and A Firm Foundation (operating campaign) with a combined service of worship at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary. The day will culminate in the congregation offering its commitments of prayer, volunteer service, and pledges to the operating budget and capital campaign. In 2011, Oak Grove celebrated its 175th anniversary with a similar service. It was such a positive experience that we wanted to try it again for another landmark in the history of Oak Grove. Children start at 10:15 a.m. so that parents will have the ability to get to worship on time. Drop off and pickup young children in their age level classrooms (birth Pre-K). Twos, threes and Pre-K aged children will experience a live puppet performance during the morning. Drop off and pick up for older children (Kindergarten 5th grade) is in Heritage Hall (Gym). A professional juggler Quite a Catch is coming to perform and share a message about our faith, followed by hands-on learning stations. The youth grades 6 through 12 will meet in Fellowship Hall for breakfast at 10:30 a.m. then worship at 11:00 a.m. In the sanctuary, our combined worship service will feature Youth and Children s Choirs, Chancel Choir, Chamber Choir, instrumental ensemble and soloists. Oak Grove Building Prayer Dear Lord, I join with my church family in laying hands on our new church building, envisioning a sacred space where Your people will be praying together, studying Your word together, finding inspiration to minister to those in our community and around the world together, falling deeper in love with You together, and listening to Your call on our lives together. Above all else, we desire to glorify Your name in the Oak Grove Community. Let your light so shine through us that when others pass by our church, walk into our church, experience the people of our church, and see the good deeds of our church, Your name will be glorified. Multiply the gifts of Your people so that we may see the power of Your provision for this is a time of remembering our roots, growing in our faith, and visualizing future generations coming to know You as Savior. In Christ s name, Amen. Mark your calendars and plan to attend on Sunday, October 19. There will be no pastries in the parlor on October 19. Library News Congratulations Oak Grove As many of you know, the Oak Grove UMC library has been supporting Heifer International with the Read to Feed summer reading program for many years. We were recently notified by our local Heifer International liaison, "Year after year, your church donates animals to families in need around the world, creating lasting and positive change for those who need it most. Your church is the largest cumulatively giving faith community in the Atlanta area. You should be so proud of the number of families you've helped with your generosity, and please know that we are deeply grateful!" The amount that Oak Grove has given Heifer International to date totals over $42,000. In conjunction with a celebration of the 70th anniversary of Heifer International, we were presented with an award at the Carter Center recognizing our years of support for the organization. This is such a special honor for our library and our church, and we thank all of you for your support of this program. We look forward to continuing our summer reading program and our support of Heifer International with the Read to Feed program.
