1 November 22, 2015 THANKSGIVING SUNDAY This year marks a new observance of the holiday season for us. Thanksgiving is forever changed. There is an empty chair at our table, and a vacancy in our heart. Grief tempts us to say We will not observe Thanksgiving this year. No one would blame us. We could withdraw into a respectful observance of grief. Our grief forces us to remember that thanksgiving and gratitude are spiritual disciplines we choose to undertake. Gratitude is not purely a spontaneous elation for deep grace, though that is how thanksgiving works at times. A teen receiving a car for the first time erupts into euphoric thanksgiving, a new state of gratitude for all things parents provide. This state often lasts hours if not days on the heels of a car purchase. At other times, thanksgiving is a discipline. It is a lens through which we choose to view the world, and one the scripture commends to us as a spiritually healthy way of life. During the course of Andrew s illness we chose to give thanks for the provision of God. Having framed our experience around God s provision, we found ourselves grateful even in difficult days. Between the day of Andrew s death and his memorial service, I found myself experiencing deep gratitude for the friendship, kindness, and support of people we love. Thanksgiving does not always come easy, but we choose to give thanks because we believe that every moment of life is a gift from God. We believe that the love we share in our family is special, and we cherish it. We choose to give thanks because we believe that life is good, despite this and other times of sadness. We believe that the final word of our existence is not death, but it is eternal life. Thanksgiving will be different for us, but we choose to give thanks for one another, for friends, for family, for memories, and for a promised future. Glenn, Cathy, Lee, and my mother will gather around the table, and we will offer thanksgiving to God, not because it is easy, but because we have chosen to live a life of gratitude.

10 2015 Barbecue Comments The 54th Annual BBQ was another huge success! We couldn t have asked for a better day to enjoy food, fellowship, and God s many blessings. The crew was a bit concerned how things would go, given the ongoing construction; however, as usual, the volunteers rallied, and the day went as smoothly as ever. The UMM raised in excess of $29,000 and looks forward to distributing those funds to a number of different causes, both inside our church and in the community at large. Certainly, many lives have been touched by the food, fellowship and fund raising that is the Oak Grove Barbeque. Many sincere thanks to the volunteers and staff for their service.
