1 October 4, 2015 World Communion Sunday WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY World Communion Sunday brings the Christian world together around the body of Christ. On this day, we celebrate Christian unity amidst diversity. We do not claim that we are all of one mind in all matters because we are not. However, there is one thing that matters: Jesus Christ is Lord. On that we agree, and around the table of remembrance and grace we gather on Sunday. In the US this year, World Communion Sunday comes on the heels of the visit of the Pope. He drew large crowds and connected with people. Though the Pope has no direct impact on Protestant churches, most protestants appreciate his witness. We could celebrate as he moved through major US cities. He represents the Body of Christ, as do we. During Sunday s worship at Oak Grove, representative flags from around the world will be in our sanctuary as a reminder that in Jesus Christ we are all one. In the words of the great hymn, In Christ there is no east or west, in Him no north or south. Join us Sunday to hear our combined choirs amidst wonderful visuals as we celebrate the grace of Christ and proclaim Christian unity.

2 8:30 and 11 a.m. ORDER OF WORSHIP October 4, 2015 World Communion Sunday (In preparation for worship, please silence all cell phones.) Gathering Music Communion Hymn arr. Dr. Glenn Ethridge Procession of Choirs (11:00 ) I Will Go Up to the Altar of God Michael Joncas Angel, Cherub, Celebrate, Music Maker and Chancel Choirs Congregation, last chorus: I will go up to the altar of God, To the God who gives me life; I will go up to the altar of God, To the God of my delight! *Hymn of Praise Christ for the World We Sing UMH 568 *Affirmation of Faith from the United Church of Canada Dr. Amy Morgan We are not alone, we live in God s world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the church: to celebrate God s presence, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen. A Morning Prayer and The Lord s Prayer Rev. Susan Allen Grady Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Sermon The Common Throne of God Dr. Ethridge Menu for October 7, 2015 Roast Beef, Baked Potato Casserole, Green Beans, Rolls, Salad Bar, German Chocolate Cake Name: Sacrament of Holy Communion A Service of Word and Table II UMH 12 The sacrament of communion is a sign and means of receiving God's grace. Therefore communion, like grace itself, is available to all people without regard to age, church membership status, relationship to Oak Grove, or denominational affiliation. The table belongs to God, so all are welcome. There is a mobile station for worshipers who prefer to be served in their seats. If you prefer gluten-free elements, please go to the station to the left of the pulpit. You are always welcome to choose any station by simply walking to the station of your choice. Once you receive the bread, please dip it in the grape juice in the chalice. In our tradition worshipers do not drink from the chalice. After receiving communion, you may kneel at the chancel to pray or return to your seat. *Sending Hymn We ve a Story to Tell to the Nations UMH 569 (Those who wish to join the church are invited to come forward.)
