1 August 20, 2017 Give Three a Month Welcome back from summer vacation! As you make your plans for fall, remember your faith commitment, as expressed at Oak Grove. I would like to ask that during this fall, you make participation in worship a priority for you and your family. I hope you will be in worship at least three Sundays every month this Fall. No doubt this will require you to make some sacrifices, and I hope you will make Sunday participation at Oak Grove a priority in your discipleship. ELEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Building Program Update: Portico Renovation We are about to sign a contract to begin renovation of the Portico. The portico serves as the main entrance to Oak Grove, and the renovated space will create an accessible entry and give more room for socializing. The wooden doors will be replaced with glass doors to increase safety and security. The doors will open automatically, increasing accessibility for those in wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers. As you enter the Portico, the area to the right, previously occupied by the library, will have a staffed welcome desk with overhead monitors listing room assignments, events, and information. As you move toward the new wing, there will be a room on the right serving as a staging area for food service in the Grand Hall. The staging area will include a sink, a residential dishwasher, counter space, coffee pots, refrigeration, and electrical capacity for warming trays to be stored. This area will not have any cooking capabilities. In addition to the visible work, the HVAC system will be replaced to match the new high efficiency units throughout the education buildings. The heating system will be integrated in such a way that we can replace the sanctuary boiler, which has reached the end of its useful life expectancy. The capitals atop the columns on the front entrance to the sanctuary will be replaced as they are damaged. This project is being connected to the portico for cost efficiency and because it is difficult to find a construction company willing to accept the column capital project by itself. This is an exciting time to be at Oak Grove. I hope to see you in worship, at least three times a month, throughout the fall.

4 OAK GROVE NEWS August 20, 2017 Invite Someone to Oak Grove In the last 10 years, we have received 100 new members a year! Stop. Read that again! Praise the Lord. God is at work at Oak Grove. The key to new people coming to Oak Grove is your invitation. Casually mention Oak Grove in conversation once per week, then invite people to share in mission (Feed My Starving Children), in Bible study (Disciple and Christian Believer), and in worship. People are open to the sincere invitation of people they know and trust. Also, your presence is part of your witness, so be in worship at least three Sundays a month. God is at work at Oak Grove; get on board. Wesley Woods Offering Changes Lives Oak Grove is one of the most generous churches in the conference in its gifts to Wesley Woods. This year Oak Grove gave $12,530 to the Mother s Day Offering. On behalf of Martha Knight (actual resident who was excited to share her story), thank you. Ms. Knight lives in a HUD-subsidized apartment at Wesley Woods St. John Towers in Augusta. At home, she was falling regularly and had been hospitalized 11 times. She needed to move to a personal care home, but neither she nor her family could afford it. Her son-in-law suffered a massive stroke, and her daughter had to care for him. Who would care for Ms. Knight? Thanks to your gifts to the benevolence program, Wesley Woods St. John Towers took Ms. Knight into personal care. She has not had a single fall since arriving. Thank you for changing lives with your gift to Wesley Woods through the Mother s Day offering. Join our Lay Ministry Team! Lay Ministers visit and call people who are dealing with difficult life situations such as illness or grief. We are currently looking for some more people who are passionate about showing God s care. We are in particular need of males. Training is provided and visits can be made to accommodate any schedule. Contact Amy Morgan (amorgan@ogumc.org) for more information. 8 Your opportunity for small group Bible study in community is coming this fall! Disciple Bible study is still the #1 choice for in-depth Bible study. Disciple helps you search scripture in community as you find meaning for your life together with other disciples. Below are your choices for participating in Disciple this fall: Disciple 1: Becoming Disciples through Bible Study (pre-requisite for other Disciple studies) a 34-week overview of the entire Bible study gives the Old and New Testaments equal time, emphasizing the wholeness of the Bible as a revelation of God draws upon the work of scholars, the personal Bible reading and study of the participant, and dynamic group discussion to aid understanding of the Bible participant book: $44 Sundays, 5:30-7:30 p.m., starting September 10, Joy Trotti facilitating Tuesdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m., starting Sept. 12, Stephanie Byrne and Leslie McBee facilitating Disciple 1 x 2 meets every other week on Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m., starting September 13, Ruth Primm facilitating Disciple 2: Into the Word, Into the World a 32-week study proclaims the transforming power of Scripture while teaching Bible study skills that take participants deeper into the Scripture keeping Bible study related to witness is reinforced while participants are encouraged to practice spiritual disciplines arising out of Scripture for the purpose of changing habits and transforming lives Participant book: $44 Sundays, 5:30-7:30 p.m., starting September 10, Cliff Howard facilitating Disciple 3: Remember Who You Are a 32-week study of the major and minor Old Testament prophets, with the exception of Daniel, and the 13 Letters traditionally attributed to Paul. Testimonials from Disciple Bible Study Facilitators In my first Disciple class 25 years ago, we gave names and one statement about ourselves. I said, "I am Leslie Mcbee and I hate Bible Study." Raised as a Methodist, my own experience with Bible study had been excruciatingly boring. Ill prepared Sunday school teachers sometimes pushed personal agendas with no discussion, and study was anything but alive and challenging. Disciple Study is different. Experiencing the Bible as one message (with experts in language, history, and archaeology) I discovered a living document. My own journey now has a plan desperately needed in unsure times and circumstances. Study takes time... but what time do we "have?" I pray you feel called as an apprentice/ disciple, and will arrange your schedule for time to understand what God calls us to hear. Leslie McBee Disciple Bible Study is an important part of my life. I am busy with work travel and my share of three kids worth of activities but I have learned that every aspect of my life is better when I prioritize Bible study and daily reading. Getting to know a group of Christians through our common faith strengthens my own faith and hopefully helps strengthen theirs. The Bible is an amazing gift to all of us. It can be challenging, but it is also helpful to have a team of friends and the Disciple resources to help reach understanding. This will be my seventh straight year of Disciple and I plan to continue. Mark Byrne
