1 August 21, 2016 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Welcome to Church! Take this brief quiz to find out how well you are at welcoming new people to Oak Grove. When I see new people at church, I o a. avert my eyes so they don t think I m staring at them. o b. elbow the person next to me and point out the newcomers, so that person will acknowledge the new people. o c. nod and smile to show the people that I recognize their presence. o d. make a bee-line for them during the service or just after to say hello, find out their names, and introduce them to others. When people I don t know sit next to me on a bench or pew, I o a. scoot away from them a little so we have more space between us. o b. smile and say, Hi, then go back to what I m doing. o c. shake hands, introduce myself, and ask about them. o d. everything in c, plus introduce them to others sitting nearby. When others look lost at church, I o a. step into the nearest restroom or classroom, hoping they don t look to me for help. o b. grab a greeter or pastor and encourage him/her to help the people. o c. go up to them and point them in the right direction. o d. offer to escort the people where they need to go. I hope you answered d on every question! It is hard to show up at a new church, so I hope we are in the habit of rewarding the efforts of our first time guests by intentionally greeting them, introducing ourselves, and helping them find their way around our building. This will be especially important when our new building is open as we navigate new room numbers as well as the shifting of Sunday school classes in both buildings. But more than that, I invite you to adopt a new way of being in worship on Sunday mornings. Practice noticing the people around you. Is there a face you don t know? If so, approach that person and introduce yourself saying, Hi, I m [your name]. Would you remind me of your name? You will be surprised how welcoming this kind of greeting can be. You will find many new opportunities to offer hospitality to a new person, who has put forth great effort to be at church. And don t forget to wear your nametag! (If you do not yet have a laminated Oak Grove name tag, please see Dale Smith in the church office.) In Matthew 10:40, Jesus says, whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. It is our tradition and our calling to welcome one another with Christian grace and love. I look forward to the opportunity to welcome new faces into the community of Christ here at Oak Grove! Will you join me?

Ten tickets will be mailed to each Oak Grove household after Labor Day. Watch for this mailing which will contain information about the Barbecue and how you can help ensure its success. Circle this date on your calendar and tell your friends and neighbors to mark their calendars also. The Barbecue is a great day for the community as well as the church. Over 25 church, community, and mission causes benefit. Volunteer sign up will be available in mid September for the nearly 500 workers needed to make the Barbecue a success. Additional information will be available in the coming weeks. Barbecue questions may be directed either to Chairman Wallace Moreman ( ) or Clayton Webster ( ). UMW Crafts Sale and Bazaar Our annual Craft Sale will be coming October 15, to our UMM Barbecue. We hope that many of our talented church members are planning ahead and working on crafts which will be sold at the barbecue. All proceeds go to local missions. Our Needles and Prayers group is already busy working on beautiful knitted items. We welcome all kinds of arts and crafts and appreciate our talented members sharing their beautiful creations. We also welcome vintage jewelry, and gift items which are in good condition. If you have some items that you would like for us to pick up before October 15, we will be happy to do so. Please call either: Barbara Adams ( ), Dale Miller ( ), or Barbara Woolard ( ). Thank you in advance for participating in this wonderful outreach project of our church. Your UMW Craft Sale Committee No Book Sale this Year The Library Committee hoped to reinstate our Book Sale at this year's barbecue but now must announce that there will be no Book Sale again this year. Please donate any books you have to other worthwhile causes. God willing, the Book Sale will return next year! Thank You Oak Grove! The Yates Family wants to thank all of you for the support given to us for the six Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) dogs that we have raised over the last 10 years. We have recently turned Higbee in to the facility in Orlando for advanced training. We hope he graduates to be a Service/Assistance Dog. The other CCI dogs we trained in the OGUMC community have been placed, two as hearing dogs, one with a man who has autism, and one with a stroke victim. We are now taking a break from raising another pup. Thank you all for being supportive in our quest to raise a well-rounded, church going pup, who knows to crawl under the pews and fall asleep until Glenn gives the benediction. The Atlanta Chapter of Canine Companions for Independence is hosting a fundraiser, DogFest Walk n Roll, which is a wheelchair-accessible one mile family and dog-friendly walk event. DogFest will be held at Atlantic Station, September 10, 2016, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The goal is to raise $50,000 to pay for one dog. Oak Grove has donated $200 to the Sandy Yates Team through The Blessing. For more information go to cci.org/dogfestatlanta. Blessings, Sandy, Randy, Scott, Corey and Rusty Yates Mission Celebration We had a great summer mission with the Nett Church. We collected $8730 toward the mission ministry of the church, which exceeded our goal of $5000. We had over 40 people who volunteered as we assisted with the Summer Games event and the carnival for the mobile home community. We were able to distribute backpacks and book supplies to the children and teens who came to the carnival. Thank you Oak Grove for your heart for missions and for helping this new church make a great start! Collecting Children s Books As you are preparing for the new school year, please consider donating your used children s books. The Oak Grove Services Ministry is collecting children s books now for our enrichment focus as part of the Smart Lunch Smart Kid mission. 7 OAK GROVE NEWS August 21, 2016 Membership Rewards Becoming a member of Oak Grove is very rewarding! Your life will be enhanced, even transformed in several ways, when you decide to make a faith commitment to Oak Grove: Small group experiences: whether it is in a Covenant Group, Sunday school class, or Disciple Bible study, your faith will be deepened by being in a small group. Why is it different when you are a member? Your sense of commitment to the others in your group is deeper. You have opportunities to build those relationships through all the other ways you become involved at Oak Grove when you are a member. The small group experience becomes a window to a deeper relationship with Christ and with others when you make the commitment to become a member of the church. Serving others: when you are a member, you want to be here more often! And when you are here, you find out about all kinds of ways to serve the community and the world through Oak Grove. Whether it is through school supply drives, the Mobile Soup Kitchen, Needles and Prayer, Communion teams, international service trips, or one of the other ways we serve here, you will find that serving with other members of the church helps your connection to each other and to Christ grow much deeper. Having a place to belong: a place at the table on Wednesday nights during Midweek, or a seat next to a new friend in worship on Sunday morning might be what you are looking for. Oak Grove is such a great place to get connected and to find the place where your spirit, your family, and YOU belong. Joining is easy! Talk to one of our pastors about how to join, or come forward on Sunday morning at the end of the worship service and let us know you want to join. We are happy to receive you as you transfer from another church, reaffirm your faith, or make a first time faith commitment. We would also love to talk with you about baptism or anything else that will help you begin your spiritual journey with this church family. We look forward to talking with you.
