We remember how Jesus gathered a group of friends, his disciples, around him as he engaged in his ministry. From the beginnings of the Bible, our faith has been one that is practiced in community. And so it is appropriate that we come together, in worship, as the Oak Grove family of faith, to celebrate the coming babe and to experience the wonder that is Christmas. As we light the fourth candle of Advent and near the end of our waiting, we watch in anticipation for how God will be at work in our midst. A great way to share with people in need is through the Oak Grove Advent Offering. Our Advent Offering provides a large portion of the funding for the mission ministry of Oak Grove, which includes everything from Smart Lunch, Smart Kid sandwich lunches in the summer to providing financial assistance and food through the Toco Hills Community Alliance. Your giving makes a real difference in the lives of others! Please use the special Advent offering envelope that was mailed or pick one up at church. Nursery provided for the 3 and 5 p.m. services. Scouts BSA Girls Troop Forming at Oak Grove The Oak Grove Scouting ministry is expanding in 2019 with the addition of Scouts BSA Girls Troop 177. Troop 177 is open to girls ages There will be an informational meeting about the new girls troop at Oak Grove on Tuesday, December 16, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. in Grand Hall. Please note that Troop 177 is for girls only and will function cooperatively but separately from Boy Scout Troop 77. Both are chartered through Oak Grove United Methodist Church and function under the church governance through the Troop Committee. Scouts BSA Girls Troop 177 is open to anyone in the community. We invite girls with a pioneer spirit and a desire to experience the excitement of BSA Scouting to join! A heartfelt thank you to Lindsey Luepke, Bryna Wiggins, Jenny Chambers, Cindy Miller, Gil Kersh, Amy and Dan Morgan, the staff, and all who helped to make Oak Grove a beautiful place during this Advent and Christmas season. Children must be one year by September 1, Caring for Clarkston Meet in the Youth Lobby on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 9 a.m. Now is a Great time to donate stocks This is a great time to pay your church pledge or make gifts to the Building Program through gifts of stock. For people who itemize, there can be significant tax benefits. You receive credit for the current value of the stock regardless of your cost basis. If you choose to make a stock gift to Oak Grove, please notify Pam Reynolds (preynold@ogumc.org). Some brokerage houses do not tell the church the name of the donor. Talk to your tax advisor about the advantages to you of giving stock! Donating Items to Oak Grove for Missions Oak Grove is a tremendously generous congregation. Our serving ministry appreciates all the items you donate to our many collections for missions. The cabinets outside of Fellowship Hall provide a location to donate to missions on an ongoing basis. When donating items, please check to see which items the organizations are currently collecting. Oak Grove is no longer collecting household items or clothing unless there is a specific request for particular items. A list of helpful items is located inside the cabinet door of each collection Midweek Meal Price Increase for 2019 Beginning in January the Midweek meal prices are being increased by $1.00. While the Food Services staff has diligently worked for the past six years to keep the prices within budget, the rising cost of food prices does necessitate an increase in our prices. Beginning with the first Midweek on January 9, the meal prices will be: Adult meal: $9 Youth meal: $8 ages Child meal: $7 ages 3-11 Children under 3: Free Family bundle rate: Two adults and two or more children 11 years of age and under ($25) or One adult and two or more children 11 years of age or under ($18). 9:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Our Time Together will include: Activities for Good Health A Delicious Brunch The Program, based on Joan Chittister s book The Gift of Years with guest presenters: Rev. Hurricane Recovery Training The recovery process for the fall hurricanes in South Georgia, South Carolina, and the panhandle of Florida continues. The devastation is immense and many do not have the physical or financial resources to recover on their own. The United Methodist Church is sending teams regularly. If you would like to train to be part of the relief effort for these and future storms, sign up for one of the Atlanta area training dates at Interest in training continues at a high level. Tickets are FREE and available on the Portico Welcome Desk Donations received that day to Theatre Works will be used to Support our Drama Ministry Auditions for Annie Midweek Communion Wednesdays at 5 p.m. 30 minute communion service in Grand Hall Nursery available with reservation by the prior Monday at noon (nursery@ogumc.org). Theatre Works, in cooperation with OGUMC, will present Annie March 7 9. We are looking for girls ages 6 12 who love to sing, dance and act. We also need to fill some adult roles. All roles require some singing. Rehearsals begin after the new year, and will be held 2 3 evenings/week for no more than 2 hours and Saturday mornings at the church. Winter Retreat for 5th graders Dr. Mary-Elizabeth Ellard A Sorrowful War Monday, January 14 6:15 p.m. Fellowship Hall As we ring in 2019, we start the year off with a very special guest speaker, Dr. Mary-Elizabeth Ellard. Dr. Ellard is a practicing veterinarian who works with numerous animal welfare organizations, provides both surgical and medical services, teaches at the University of Florida's shelter medicine, and rescues God's creatures in need. She is also a historian with a special interest in horses and mules during wartime, specifically the American Civil War. She serves as a Trustee and Vice President of the Georgia Battlefields Association and on the Executive Committee of the Atlanta Civil War Round Table. She also leads historic tours in Atlanta. Reservations are required by noon, Thursday, January 10, and can be made online(ogumc.org), by phone ( ), or on sign-up sheets. When: Saturday, January 26 to Sunday, January 27, 2019 The menu is ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, garden salad, yeast rolls, banana pudding, and beverage. The cost is $8.00. Location: Camp Glisson, Dahlonega, GA a faith and sexuality education program for children currently in the 5th grade Purpose: To give children in fifth grade an opportunity to explore their faith foundation before transitioning from children s ministry to youth ministry. Goals: Participants will leave the 24-hour experience with a sense of community, confidence that they are not alone as they $45 registration covers lunch, snacks, encounter the unknowns before them, supplies, class workbooks, etc. practical tools to strengthen their faith, and Pre-registration is required online (ogumc.org). fun memories of beautiful Camp Glisson!
