These are iconic words of Captain James Tiberias Kirk from movie Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, after Captain Kirk did unthinkable for fans of science fiction TV show and franchise Star Trek he destroyed USS Enterprise which was symbol of inspiration, home and optimism for characters and viewers of beloved program. Destroying Enterprise was like eating cornflakes without milk, or having cheese with no bread or wine; you just can t have Kirk, Spock and Bones without Enterprise! For those of us unfamiliar with pop culture references and shows like Star Trek, I am sure you can resonate with tragedy and heartbreak of being displaced from home, of being disillusioned when once inspired, and pessimistic where re was once optimism. To help guide us on our life s journey, stripped of our normal leadership as a church, we are taking a break from our annual summer survey of Psalms and spending some time with remnant of believers in Old Testament who were stripped of ir normal leadership and displaced from ir own Enterprise, Temple of Living God. This Summer, Grace will focus on books of Haggai and Zechariah that speak to a people who are called to rebuild Temple that was a symbol of inspiration to nations, home to God and his covenant people, and a sign of optimism that one day world would be made right again. After Kirk heartbreakingly stares at Enterprise burning up in atmosphere and asks, What have I done?, Bones replies, What you had to do, what you always do. Turn death into a fighting chance to live.. In Scripture, God allowed destruction of Temple in response to our sin, but through that death His people were reborn. In Christ, His Body, or Temple, (John 2: 19), was destroyed so that in his death we might live. This Summer as we read and reflect, may words of Haggai and Zechariah inspire us all towards true faith and obedience. Unless orwise noted, all Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Standard Version (ESV ), copyright 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. Used by permission. 3 REFLECTION QUOTES But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in marketplaces and calling to ir playmates, We played flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn. Jesus in Matw 11:1617 When you rolled up in Escalade Saw that truck you gave to valet Knew that it was game when you looked at me Pulling up your sleeve so I could see Rolley bling Saw you later in corner booth Raising up a toast so I would notice you But your heart's a mess Think you outta know Doesn't matter if you're balling out of control You think you gotta keep me iced (You don't) You think I'm gonna spend your cash (I won't) Even if you were broke My love don't cost a thing Think I wanna drive your Benz (I don't) If I wanna floss I got my own Even if you were broke My love don't cost a thing J. Lo, Love Don't Cost a Thing See lonely man re on corner What he's waiting for, I don't know But he waits every day now He's just waiting for something to show And nobody knows him, and nobody cares 'Cause re's no hidin' place There's no hidin' place For you Lookin' everywhere at no one He sees everything and nothing at all, oh When he shouts, nobody listens Where he leads, no one will go, oh Genesis, Man on Corner

4 Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for duration of worship service. SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP Adapted from Exodus 33:15; 3:59 Seated Standing Text in bold is read toger by entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout se pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in lobby to engage children in elements of our worship service. Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gared here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Wher we realize it or not, he is one calling us to himself today and every day. The Lord descended in cloud and stood with him re, and proclaimed name of Lord. And Lord passed before him and proclaimed, The Lord, Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear guilty, visiting iniquity of fars on children and children's children, to third and fourth generation. O LORD, go in midst of us! O LORD, go ahead of us! If your present will not go with us, do not send us forward in our everyday lives without you! Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus! 5 LECTIO SACRA Micah 6 Seated Hear what Lord says: Arise, plead your case before mountains, and let hills hear your voice. Hear, you mountains, indictment of Lord, and you enduring foundations of earth, for Lord has an indictment against his people, and he will contend with Israel. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thousands of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. O my people, what have I done to you? How have I wearied you? Answer me! For I brought you up from land of Egypt and redeemed you from house of slavery, and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. O my people, remember what Balak king of Moab devised, and what Balaam son of Beor answered him, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know righteous acts of Lord. With what shall I come before Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, fruit of my body for sin of my soul? He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? The voice of Lord cries to city and it is sound wisdom to fear your name: Hear of rod and of him who appointed it! Can I forget any longer treasures of wickedness in house of wicked, and scant measure that is accursed? Shall I acquit man with wicked scales and with a bag of deceitful weights? Your rich men are full of violence; your inhabitants speak lies, and ir tongue is deceitful in ir mouth. (Continued on next page). 2

6 Therefore I strike you with a grievous blow, making you desolate because of your sins. You shall eat, but not be satisfied, and re shall be hunger within you; you shall put away, but not preserve, and what you preserve I will give to sword. You shall sow, but not reap; you shall tread olives, but not anoint yourselves with oil; you shall tread grapes, but not drink wine. For you have kept statutes of Omri, and all works of house of Ahab; and you have walked in ir counsels, that I may make you a desolation, and your inhabitants a hissing; so you shall bear scorn of my people. This is Word of Lord! Thanks be to God! by Augustus Montague Toplady 1763 Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. 7 CONFESSION OF SIN Adapted from Zechariah 7:10 Standing O God, Your servant Zechariah said that people of God had diamondhard hearts, that refused to obey God s Word. Have mercy on us, O God, we confess that our hearts have been hardened toward your Law. We are slow to let our minds be framed by your Word. You called for us to render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one anor, and care for poor, immigrant, as well as orphans and widows. Have mercy on us, O God, we confess that our hands have been slow to work for peace of our neighbors, and that our lips have worked to hurt, divide, and frustrate. We admit our frustration that our prayers have gone unanswered. We resent that our good deeds and our religious observances have not spared us heartbreak, disappointments, and unanswered prayers. Have mercy on us, O God, that we have allowed our hearts to harden and our hands slow to obey because of our embittered hearts. Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God and each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. And yet, we wait for answered prayers and ask, should we weep and fast, and tough it out as we have done for so many years? Help us, O God, replace our diamondhard hearts, with hearts of gold. Replace lips that injure, with ones that heal. Replace our hands that are slow to serve with hands and feet ready and willing to help those in need. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.)

9 RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Isaiah 30 Ezekiel 11 Though our hearts have been hardened and we have at times refused to listen, God still stand ready to bring us back from exile, he says, The Lord waits to be gracious to you, and refore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him. Because of Jesus work to bring us back from our exile, for He says, I will give m one heart, and a new spirit I will put within m. 19 SERMON TEXT Zechariah 7:11 [1] In fourth year of King Darius, word of Lord came to Zechariah on fourth day of ninth month, which is Chislev. [2] Now people of Bel had sent Sharezer and Regemmelech and ir men to entreat favor of Lord, [3] saying to priests of house of Lord of hosts and prophets, Should I weep and abstain in fifth month, as I have done for so many years? [] Then word of Lord of hosts came to me: [5] Say to all people of land and priests, When you fasted and mourned in fifth month and in seventh, for se seventy years, was it for me that you fasted? [6] And when you eat and when you drink, do you not eat for yourselves and drink for yourselves? [7] Were not se words that Lord proclaimed by former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and prosperous, with her cities around her, and South and lowland were inhabited? [8] And word of Lord came to Zechariah, saying, [9] Thus says Lord of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one anor, [10] do not oppress widow, farless, sojourner, or poor, and let none of you devise evil against anor in your heart. [11] But y refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped ir ears that y might not hear. [12] They made ir hearts diamondhard lest y should hear law and words that Lord of hosts had sent by his Spirit through former prophets. Therefore great anger came from Lord of hosts. [13] As I called, and y would not hear, so y called, and I would not hear, says Lord of hosts, [1] and I scattered m with a whirlwind among all nations that y had not known. Thus land y left was desolate, so that no one went to and fro, and pleasant land was made desolate. 16
