Bugs Bunny Have I made wrong choice? We all know what it feels like to ask yourself this question. Wher you re secondguessing a job you took, a relationship you find yourself in middle of, or what you ordered for lunch, you know sensation of having sinking feeling that you might have made a mistake. Being a disciple of Jesus is no different. The Gospel of Luke was written to a man named Theophilus. We don't know a lot of details about Theophilus, but he appears to be a Christian who is having second thoughts about life of discipleship he has embarked upon. This is how Luke addresses him in book s beginning: [I ve written this for you], Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning things you have been taught. Apparently, Theophilus is questioning his decision to become a Christian. Living in a culture that is marked by ruthless power politics, a relatively weak and often hidden church, and an almost incessant questioning and dismissal of Christian faith, it is easy to envision Theophilus asking questions like: Is this Jesus story really true? Is God really faithful to his promises? What does true discipleship look like? Luke went to great lengths researching and crafting his gospel to answer questions like se. He wrote it so that people like Theophilus, and us, might have confidence that God is at work in world and in our lives through Jesus Christ. To be a disciple of Jesus is to be on right path path of salvation, which to Luke and his original audience meant healing or wholeness. So, wher you re a new Christian, a seasoned saint, or someone investigating Jesus for first time, Luke is a great book for you to dive into. Let us worship.

3 REFLECTION QUOTES There is a fundamental distinction between saying we question Bible and Bible questions us. It is common, in congregations, to hear of subjects like Using Bible in Small Groups. But we do not use Bible; if we attempt to do so, it will slip away from us, leaving something opaque and very much less dynamic in its place. Contrary to story line in many spiritual journals, biblical narrative does not tell of our journey towards God; it is or way around. The right approach is not What questions do I have to ask of Bible? but What questions does Bible have to ask of me? God does not wait for Adam to start looking for him; it is God who comes looking with question, Adam, where are you? first words spoken to fallen humanity. God says to Job, Gird up your loins like a man; I will question you, and you will answer me. God is one who says, I will show you great and mighty things, which you do not know. (Jeremiah 33:3) Fleming Rutledge, The Crucifixion I was re when y crucified my Lord I held scabbard when soldier drew his sword. I threw dice when y pierced his side But I've seen love conquer great divide. When love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame. Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down But I did what I did before love came to town. U2, When Love Comes to Town, from album Rattle Hum [In our Sabbath practices] our negative ceasing to possess must be accompanied by a positive choosing to be generous. Not only do we give up consumerism and accumulation and exploitation of our society, but we also release ourselves from burdens by sharing our material and spiritual possessions food from our tables, flowers from our gardens, music in our souls. 4 Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for duration of worship service. Text in bold is read toger by entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout se pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in lobby to engage children in elements of our worship service. Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gared here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Wher we realize it or not, he is one calling us to himself today and every day. David Gungor, Ian Cron, and John Arndt 2015 The Brilliance FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY PRELUDE Bror The song text below is given for reflection When I look into face Of my enemy I see my bror, I see my bror. Forgiveness is garment of our courage; power to make peace we long to know. Open up our eyes to see wounds that bind all of humankind. May our shuttered hearts greet dawn of life with charity and love. CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 112:15 (NIV) Seated Standing Praise Lord. Blessed are those who fear Lord, who find great delight in his commands. Their children will be mighty in land; generation of upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in ir houses, and ir righteousness endures forever. Even in darkness light dawns for upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous. Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct ir affairs with justice. 1

6 Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thousands of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. LECTIO SACRA Isaiah 58:612 (NIV) Is not this kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose chains of injustice and untie cords of yoke, to set oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with hungry and to provide poor wanderer with shelter when you see naked, to clo m, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; n your righteousness will go before you, and glory of Lord will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. Seated If you do away with yoke of oppression, with pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of hungry and satisfy needs of oppressed, n your light will rise in darkness, and your night will become like noonday. The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sunscorched land and will strengn your frame. You will be like a wellwatered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Your people will rebuild ancient ruins and will raise up ageold foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings." This is Word of Lord. Thanks be to God! Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. INTERLUDE 3

7 CONFESSION OF SIN Standing Our Lord and our Far, you are tremendously gracious with us. You give freely, abundantly, and openhandedly to us, your beloved children. Forgive us for times when we do not believe this and live like orphans. Forgive us when we cling to our possessions and reputations. Forgive us when we oppress ors to advance ourselves. Heal our blindness to our own corruption and greed. Heal our blindness to oppressive political, educational, and economic structures, systems, and practices which we often take part in without seeing yoke y place upon ors. Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God and each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. Gracious Far, enlarge our hearts to become more like yours. May we share freely, abundantly and openhandedly with ors. May we be people who do justice and practice righteousness. May we be generous to ors in this congregation and this city. Remake us into your image, O Lord. (You are invited to confess your sins silently) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Romans 8 Brors and sisters, hear good news! There is refore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For we are sure that neir death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. May peace of Christ be with you! And also with you!

9 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 112 (NIV) Praise Lord. Blessed are those who fear Lord, who find great delight in his commands. Praying through Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, re will be pauses for reflection. Surely righteous will never be shaken; y will be remembered forever. They will have no fear of bad news; ir hearts are steadfast, trusting in Lord. Their hearts are secure, y will have no fear; in end y will look in triumph on ir foes. They have freely scattered ir gifts to poor, ir righteousness endures forever; ir horn will be lifted high in honor. The wicked will see and be vexed, y will gnash ir teeth and waste away; longings of wicked will come to nothing. 6

May those gared here continue to be richly blessed by proclamation of your Son s healing word. (Please pray silently for church.) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Righteous Lord, fill us with your Spirit amidst difficult and challenging problems in our city and nation: gentrification, homelesness, lack of affordable housing, mental illness, mass incarceration, racial justice, loneliness, immigration, unborn. Grant us your Spirit of wisdom, compassion, and justice. Lead us, people of this congregation, to live lives of kindness, kindness, and sacrificial love. May we be your agents of justice and healing on earth. Let your light shine through us, our Lord! (Please pray silently for church.) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Compassionate and healing Far, our world is broken, and we are broken. Let your justice roll down like waters, and your righteousness like an everflowing stream. Women s Retreat 2017 March As children we often imagine life to be a series of one graduation after anor sort of a straight line up leading to more and more happiness and fulfillment. There is often very little preparation for navigating unexpected twists and turns that life takes, and we can find ourselves confused and uncertain about how to make sense of it all. The story of God is filled with women just like us who had hopes and dreams and found mselves in midst of a story much bigger than (and very different from) ir own plans. During our women s retreat this year we will talk about some of common seasons we travel through as women and what it looks like to stay engaged with our own hearts and with heart of God. We will also hear from three women who are in different seasons of life about unique challenges and gifts of ir season as well as ways y have encountered God s love and invitation to m. You won t want to miss this amazing time toger! To register, visit Adult Christian Formation Series 10:30 AM To many of us, Bible can be daunting and seemingly impossible to understand. Or, for ors, we can become so familiar with story of God that it becomes somewhat disconnected from reality of our daytoday lives. God s story is a compelling description of reality of our human existence, and it is has everything to do with our life here and now. During this 10week class, Understanding and Living God s Story: Connecting our Head and Heart, John Haralson and Debbie Smith will retell big story of God and connect story to practical issues and questions we face as we live or six days of week. This will be a great class for people who are new to faith as well as those who have been a Christian all ir life! Looking To Join A Community Group? 19 SERMON TEXT Luke 3:117 [1] In fifteenth year of reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his bror Philip tetrarch of region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, [2] during high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, word of God came to John son of Zechariah in wilderness. [3] And he went into all region around Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins. [] As it is written in book of words of Isaiah prophet, The voice of one crying in wilderness: Prepare way of Lord, make his paths straight. [5] Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and crooked shall become straight, and rough places shall become level ways, [6] and all flesh shall see salvation of God. [7] He said refore to crowds that came out to be baptized by him, You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from wrath to come? [8] Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our far. For I tell you, God is able from se stones to raise up children for Abraham. [9] Even now axe is laid to root of trees. Every tree refore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into fire. [10] And crowds asked him, What n shall we do? [11] And he answered m, Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise. [12] Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, Teacher, what shall we do? [13] And he said to m, Collect no more than you are authorized to do. [1] Soldiers also asked him, And we, what shall we do? And he said to m, Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages. [15] As people were in expectation, and all were questioning in ir hearts concerning John, wher he might be Christ, [16] John answered m all, saying, I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with Holy Spirit and fire. [17] His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gar wheat into his barn, but chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. 16
