1 April 29, 2018 FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER This past week Joellyn Thompson, a relatively new member of Oak Grove, shared the following story with me. I love this story because someone not only invited her to church, but multiple people helped her find her place and helped her get involved. Cathy Ethridge had been inviting us for two years straight and we kept giving every excuse known to man (lazy... hee hee). Then my husband Aaron was deployed for 3 months fall of 2016 and I got super lonely. That s when Christine Brazeal (my daughter Kinsley s teacher at Coralwood School and my dear friend) insisted that I come and sit with her in worship and put Kinsley in Sunday school. On my first Sunday, Rhiannon Brusco introduced herself to me while picking up her daughter Lucia from Sunday School, and encouraged me to start Kinsley in choir on Wednesday afternoons. We also scheduled play dates with our girls and are still good friends. And now here we are! Loving every minute of Oak Grove UMC! Inviting people to Oak Grove is a great first step, but helping a new person feel welcome and at home is an essential follow-up to the invitation. When you invite someone, I encourage you to do just what Christine did in the story above, stay with the person and help them find their way around. Introduce the person you invited to others and explore with them ways they can get involved in the life of the church. For all of us, being aware that every week there are new people searching to find their place can be helpful. As you walk through the halls, watch for people who seem uncertain and offer to help them find their way. If you see someone sitting alone in worship or at Midweek, walk over and introduce yourself. Sit with the person and engage in conversation. Oak Grove is a wonderful church full of warm, welcoming people. As we become even more attentive to welcoming new people and helping them find ways to become involved in friendships and ministries, we will have an even greater impact in our community.

Many thanks for the outpouring of support for our fifth annual church-wide diaper drive, sponsored by the Service Ministries Committee. We collected many packages of diapers/pull-ups (25% increase over last year) and approximately 100 packages of baby wipes to benefit the United Methodist Children's Home and Caring for Clarkston (C4C). The 30 volunteers made quick work of sorting the contributions!

5 Sunday, April 29, 2018 in Youth Hall Sunday School 9:30-10:30 a.m. Youth Fellowship 5:30-7:30 p.m. Oak Grove Hires New Assistant Youth Director SPR is excited to announce that Megan Biegel has been hired as our Associate Youth Director to work with Bryan. She will begin her ministry with Oak Grove on Wednesday, May 16. Megan grew up off the Georgia coast in Kingsland, Georgia, is a Georgia Bulldog fan, and enjoys crafting, painting, as well as graphic design. She has served effectively as a youth minister in a couple of United Methodist churches, most recently Canton First United Methodist Church in Canton, Georgia. Megan will be a great addition to our Youth Ministry team; she brings passion for God and youth. She is gifted at teaching and building relationships with students. Oak Grove 2018 Memorial Scholarship Awards Applications for the 2018 Oak Grove Memorial Scholarship are currently being accepted in the church office. OAK GROVE Dan Reeves Monday, May 14, 2018, 6:15 p.m. Make your reservations early as we enjoy another Steak Out on May 14, with special guest speaker, Dan Reeves, Head Coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 1997 to In 1998, Coach Reeves led the Falcons to their first NFC Championship and to our first Super Bowl appearance. During his career, he managed 6 NFC Championships, 3 AFC Championships, and won 2 Super Bowls, either as a coach or a player. Dan was inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Fame in 2006 for his performance as quarterback for the Gamecocks. We will see a different perspective of this giant in sports, as he shares his love for Christ and others through service to his neighbor through volunteerism. You will be treated to live music, a lovely afternoon tea, and a fun fashion show. All proceeds raised from this event will benefit the 2018 Mission to Haiti sponsored by United Methodist Women. This year's focus will be nurturing the Haitian women and children, providing medical services, and constructing a security fence for the facilities. This is the special Mother s Day weekend treat that you won't want to miss! Invite your mother, grandmother, best friend, daughter, aunt, or neighbor to a special time of friends and fun as you enjoy a Saturday tea party and fashion show together!
