Jeremiah 31:33 SAVED BY GOD S LOVE Because the people broke the old covenant, God promised a new covenant, not in the blood of oxen and other animals, but in the blood of the Son, Jesus Christ. This new covenant, foreseen from afar by Jeremiah and the prophets, was not to be engraved on stone, or written on paper, but carved on our hearts, so that we might know God intimately. Not by keeping many laws are we to be saved, but by the love of God, living and real in our hearts through the sacrifice of Christ. Our Eucharist is the pledge of that indwelling of Christ, and of our response of praise and thanksgiving to God for the mercy, love, and kindness shown to us in forgiving our sins and cleansing our hearts of everything evil. 4 Fifth Sunday of Lent Page 4 THE LIFTING UP OF JESUS" IS THE ASSURANCE OF OUR OWN EXALTATION AND GLORIFICATION! We are moving ahead quickly this Lent as we approach Holy Week. This week we have a wonderful opportunity to examine our hearts and to find in the midst of everything that our hearts carry, God`s law written in love. God spoke through the prophet Isaiah, and said, "I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer will they have need to teach their friends and relatives how to know the Lord. All, from least to greatest, shall know me, says the Lord, for I will forgive their evildoing and remember their sin no more." Lent`s Fifth Sunday`s readings present us with a challenge: Just as Jesus became the "Promised Messiah of Glory" and the "Conquering Son of Man" by offering His life for others, we, too, must possess Heaven by dying to self and spending our lives in self-giving, sacrificial service. The readings focus on the upcoming death of Jesus, which is interpreted not only as a priestly sacrifice, but also as the moment of His "exaltation" and "glorification". Jesus accepts the cross as his "hour", meaning the stepping-stone to his passion, death, Resurrection and exaltation. He further considers his "hour" as the way of glorifying His Heavenly Father and of being glorified by His Father. It is also the way by which He draws all people into the saving action of God. Finally, the "lifting up" of Jesus is the assurance of our own exaltation and glorification, provided we accept our crosses. We know that the world owes everything to people who have spent their time and talents for God and their fellow human beings. Mother Teresa for instance, gave up her comfortable teaching career and, with just 17 cents in her pocket, began her challenging life for the "poorest of the poor" in the crowded streets of Calcutta. Thus, she became, in the words of the Secretary General of the UN, "the most powerful woman in the world." We see similar cases in the history of great saints, scientists and benefactors of mankind in all walks of life. A life spent for others will be glorified in this world and in Heaven. Peace! Fr. Jeremías 31:33 SALVADOS POR EL AMOR DE DIOS Después de que los israelitas quebrantaron la antigua alianza, Dios prometió una nueva alianza, no con la sangre de bueyes y otros animales sino con la sangre del Hijo, Jesucristo. Esta nueva alianza, que Jeremías y los profetas habían anticipado, no sería grabada en piedra ni escrita en papel, sino que se escribiría en el corazón, para que pudiéramos conocer a Dios íntimamente. La salvación no está en obedecer muchos preceptos, sino en el amor de Dios, que está vivo y es real en nuestro corazón gracias al sacrificio de Cristo. Nuestra Eucaristía es la promesa del Cristo que vive dentro nuestro y de nuestra respuesta de alabanza y agradecimiento a Dios por su misericordia, amor y bondad al perdonar nuestros pecados y limpiarnos el corazón de todo mal. Dios extiende esta invitación a la intimidad al ofrecernos la oportunidad de que nuestro sufrimiento se transforme en el amor perfecto del Salvador, que siempre nos amó. Copyright J. S. Enfrentado con la miseria humana, el cristiano puede responder con resignación Yo no soy nadie, qué puedo hacer yo? Nada. o puede responder con obras de caridad ayudando uno por uno a los pobres y necesitados. Esta virtud, es el pilar más importante de la conversión. Porque en ella imitamos a Jesucristo que vino no a condenar al mundo sino a salvarlo. Sin la caridad nuestros ayunos son dietas y nuestras oraciones son palabras necias. La caridad es una virtud cristiana, porque Dios es el mejor ejemplo de lo que es la caridad. La caridad no es limosna, es amor y justicia, es salud y salvación; es cumplir con el mandamiento de amarnos los unos a los otros en un mundo donde la mayoría son pobres y desamparados. La caridad es dar al necesitado algo que uno aun necesite, es obrar por cambios sociales que promuevan la dignidad humana y el bienestar económico de todos.
