The Fiscal Year 2019 Grand Annual Collection challenges us to raise $110,000 for the needs of our parish. Each Christmas and Easter the Archdiocese takes as its only collection one for our retired clergy fund, namely Clergy Benefit Trust which serves our retired priests who are in good standing who have served us so well. Our Grand Annual Collection has surpassed our anticipated goal of $110,00 and we have reached $113,850 thus far, 104 % of our goal! Due to the Christmas holiday and early print deadlines, our weekly financial reports will be delayed but will be updated in the weeks to come. The Eucharist:the Heartbeat of parish life. Adoration makes every day Christmas. Our Lord longs for this time with you. We as his disciples need this silent and sacred time. Adoration is on Thursdays beginning at 6:30-9pm in the upper church and on 3rd Sundays beginning at 1pm lower church. Did you know- We have a new inclement weather policy? We found it necessary to assure the safety of our priests, staff, and parishioners in the Winter months, that if Woburn Public Schools are delayed or cancelled, we will not be having morning Mass. We are excited to announce that St. Charles School will be holding a Career Day on Thursday, January 31 at 9am. This Career Day will be specifically for St. Charles students in grades 5-8. The purpose of this event is to expose SCS middle schoolers to various industries and career paths. We are currently seeking enthusiastic professionals from a broad range of industries who are eager to present. We are excited to hear from you! Thank you. 3 Solemnity of the Holy Family Indulgences for the Season of Christmas, which lasts until the Baptism of the Lord on January 13th this year is a festive time in the Church. We have some ways to become holier and help others do so. December 31st Publicly praying the Te Deum as an act thanksgiving on the last day of the year may earn a plenary indulgence. January 1st Publicly praying the Veni, Creator on the first day of the year may earn a plenary indulgence. Month of the Immaculate Conception Volunteers are needed in all ministries. All hands on deck! Especially needed are altar servers for all Masses and Extra-ordinary ministers of Holy Communion to bring the Eucharist to the nursing homes in our area as part of a team ministry. Everyone is most welcome to join the Spanish Community for their Tres Reyes Magos Celebration (Three Kings) next Sunday January 6 in the Parish Center. There is food and fun for all and the children will receive a gift from the Magi. In the Spanish tradition it is the 3 Kings or Magi, and not Santa Claus, who are the giver of gifts at the Epiphany on January 6th and this is the day for exchanging gifts and celebrating the adoration of our Lord. Pilgrimage is a word we use for describing how we journey towards God.In this world important places in the life of Christians and history have inspired us to walk the walk of others who have gone before us in the faith. Over the next year there will 2 terrific opportunities in our own city to participate with a group and go on a pilgrimage to a holy place. Fr John Capuci our Pastor has set his sites on leading us to Sicily. He is calling the pilgrimage Saints, Sinners, and Spaghetti and invites you to join with him next November 4 15, 2019 as he leads us in this holy and inspiring trip. Flyers with information and the trip registration forms are available at the back entrances. Fr Thomas Powers and Fr Matthias of St Anthony s & Barbara s Collaborative will also be leading a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France from June 30 July 9, Please mark your calendars for 2 very inspiring and holy opportunities. Training for Disciples in Mission is scheduled for Wednesday February 13, 2019 from 7-9pm in the Parish Center. Join us! Training for Disciples in Mission training in the Portuguese language is scheduled for Saturday February 16, 2019 in the Parish Center 9-5pm.Join us! Lenten Mission collaborated among the 3 parishes of Woburn March 31, April 1, and April 2. Save the dates! St Charles is committed to aiding our parishioners in their journey in becoming intentional disciples and in serving and growing their Church through accepting the mission and getting involved. There is no better way of doing this than offering solid catholic formation and opportunities for people to gather and share their parish and faith. Faith formation for adults will be offered throughout the year for our 3 language communities. As we further develop into the collaborative we are called to be, more opportunities will arise. Please take advantage of them and answer the call to get involved in your parish!

5 Why a Resolution? The definition of the word known by many to be used on New Year s Day, resolution, can make most of us very uncomfortable and agitated. As the above cartoon accentuates, it takes maybe alittle bit of soul searching to acknowledge that we need some changing. And, all of us do. Why do you think it is that most people feel the need to make a resolution when the new year approaches? Is it guilt from not being what we wanted to be the year before or is it a fresh start which we are afforded each new day anyway be our great and generous God? As Catholic s we realize the new year actually started on the 1st Sunday of Advent. Still, we live within the society of our world, so we should be ready for this challenge: So what am I going to do? Where do I need changing? Well for starters, we have a need for what we may not recognize and what we need the most- God. The need for silence and for God is given to us in our readings and psalms : My soul yearns and pines for the courts of the Lord ( psalm 84). Establishing a prayer time that is realistic everyday should be a priority. Is first thing in the morning easiest without interruptions? Then set that alarm clock 10 minutes earlier and make it a date. You will never regret the time you spend with God. As for other resolutions, ask for the graces. He will always give it. Fr John Capuci
