2 DIOCESE OF HONOLULU 2017 LENTEN REGULATIONS FASTING In the dioceses in the United States, Catholics aged 18 through 59 are bound to fast on both Ash Wednesday (March 1st and Good Friday (April 14th ). To fast means to consume one full meal a day at most, although taking of other, smaller quantities of food at the other customary mealtimes is permitted. Food and drink between meals (excepting water and medicine ) is not permitted on fast days. ABSTINANCE FROM MEAT Catholics aged 14 and up are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday. To abstain means refraining from eating beef, veal, pork, or poultry at least. Although eggs and milk products are acceptable. The consumption of fish and shellfish is permitted, although the penitential character of abstinence should be kept in mind. LENTEN PRACTICES The faithful are encouraged during Lent to attend daily Mass, receive Holy Communion, participate in penance services, and receive sacramental absolution; to take part in public and private exercises of piety, give generously to works of religion and charity, perform acts of kindness toward the sick, aged, and the poor; to practice voluntary self-denial, especially regarding food, drink, and worldly amusements; to pray more fervently, particularly for the intentions of the Holy Father. Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, falls on March 1st. Ashes are to be blessed as a sign of our entry into a season of conversion, repentance, and reconciliation. Ashes are to be blessed by a bishop, priest, or deacon. Others may be associated with the clergy in the distribution of ashes.

4 Maintenance Update The Major Maintenance and Repair Fund (MMR) is the primary fund source for repairing the buildings and grounds at Holy Trinity Parish. As anyone who owns a house or condominium knows there are repairs and maintenance needs that at times seem never ending. This is true at Holy Trinity where most of our buildings are 40 years old or more. The last renovation to the Church was in In the last several months the Parish has accomplished major emergency roofing work on the Church and the garage building. The total for these projects exceeded thirty thousand dollars. Another major project is the replacement of the gym louvers. The existing wooden louvers have failed causing rain water to easily enter the gym and flood the floor. These louvers are being replaced with aluminum fixed louvers that will not allow rain in but at the same time provide better air flow. The first phase of the project on the Koko Head side of the building will cost about forty five thousand dollars. The project is scheduled to begin in late February and be completed in about six weeks. Once the Koko Head side of the building is completed we will start on the Ewa side of the gym. The price for the second phase will be forty five thousand dollars as well. 5 THIS SUNDAY February 26, 2017 Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading I : Isaiah 49: Reading II : 1 Corinthians 4; 1-5 Gospel : Matthew 6: Next Sunday March 5, 2017 First Sunday of Lent Reading 1: Genesis 2: 7-9: 3: 1-7 Reading II : Romans 5: 12, Gospel Matthew 4: 1-11 RITE OF ELECTION On Sunday, March 5, our 3 adult catechumens will go to St. Teresa Co-Cathedral to sign our parish Book of Election affirming their intention to come into communion with the Church by their belief in our doctrine and receive the blessing of our bishop. They join with all the catechumens on this island to participate in this step toward Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at Easter Vigil. Please continue to pray for them on their journey. FIRST COMMUNION CLASS First Communion class for those who are already registered and have been participating in the classes is this Sunday, February 26 at 10:30 am. The classes for both the children and parents will be held upstairs in the school. + = repose/in memory st= safe trip/ travel wa = wedding anniversary si special intention Burning of the Palms Feasting Before the Lenten Fast Please join us at the church on the evening of Tuesday, February 28. We will begin with Mass at 5:00pm followed by the burning of palms from last year s Palm Sunday. If a bonfire is not enough to light up our parish, we will have a potluck supper in the Gym afterwards to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Shrove or Fat Tuesday is the traditional name for the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. It is more commonly known as Mardi Gras, which is simply Fat Tuesday in French. It gets its name from the custom of marking the day with feasting before the fasting season of Lent begins. So please come and join us for Mardi Gras that evening. We ask that you bring a dish to share. We will be having sign up sheets to indicate what you may want to bring (a salad, a main dish or a dessert) on the weekend of Feb 18 th before and after Masses. Please come in the spirit of celebrating together. We plan on music, good food and fellowship. Besides praying together, a vibrant parish plays and celebrates together. LETS CELEBRATE!!!!! 6 STEWARDSHIP CORNER STEWARDSHIP AT HOLY TRINITY CHURCH Lesson 35 Love Thy Neighbor (Mt 22:35-37) We know the Gospel parable of Jesus answer to the Pharisees question which commandment is the greatest? Jesus replied, love your Lord with all your heart Then, Jesus continued, the second is love your neighbor as yourself. In Jesus time, belonging to a group was important. There were no networks, no police, fire or ambulance, no health insurance or social security. One belonged to a community, a town, or an extended family. You looked after one another. It is in this sense that Jesus defined love and what he meant by love our neighbor as yourself. Today, we call this concept Stewardship.
