2 HOLY REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH, COLLEGE PARK, MD Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of Our Lord The first light of Easter dawn had begun to creep over the horizon. The steadfast women from Friday's gory events are returning again to the body of their Lord. "Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?" How quickly we return to mundane concerns and how thoroughly God wants to surprise us! Imagine the utter shock upon seeing the stone rolled away, the tomb empty, and a stranger clothed in light proclaiming the impossible. "You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here." He is risen indeed and the world will never be the same. We know from other Gospel passages that Mary Magdalene made haste to the disciples to proclaim the Good News. We know that Peter and John rushed to the tomb to see for themselves. We know that the wonder and awe of the Resurrection permeated the lives of the apostles until their own dying day. Can we comprehend the utterly world-changing nature of this surprise? The historical reanimation of a dead man is of no real value to us. But we know that Easter Sunday is so much more. By the Resurrection of Jesus, life has triumphed over death for us all. The gates of heaven are opened and the treasury of graces is poured out upon the here and now. This Resurrection Day, let us draw near, amazed yet unafraid, to the risen Christ. Let us recall the words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, "Jesus is not a character from the past. He lives, and he walks before us as one who is alive, he calls us to follow him, the living one, and in this way to discover for ourselves the path of life" (Easter Vigil, April 15, 2006). 3 EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD School of Religion School of Religion will not be in session this Sunday, April 1st due to Easter Sunday. School of Religion will be in session next Sunday, April 8th. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Berard in the parish office or via at 2018 Annual Jubilarian Mass Cardinal Donald Wuerl will celebrate the Annual Jubilarian Mass honoring couples married 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, and 51+ years on Sunday, June 17th at 2:00 p.m. at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Please call the Parish Office or use the sign up forms at the entrances of the church to register. All names for the Jubilarian Mass should be submitted by no later than Friday, April 6th. Chaplet of the Divine Mercy Divine Mercy Sunday will be celebrated on Sunday, April 8th. Holy Redeemer Parish will pray the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy together directly following the 10:00 a.m. Mass in the church. Celebrating God's Merciful Love In the Jubilee Year 2000, Pope John Paul II proclaimed that from that year forward the Second Sunday of Easter would be celebrated as Divine Mercy Sunday. This was proclaimed at the Canonization Mass of St. Faustina Kowalska, who worked throughout her life to make all aware of the merciful love of God. St. Faustina ( ) was born and raised in Poland. Following a vocation to religious life, she was accepted by the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. As a member of the Congregation, she worked as a cook, gardener, and porter. In her spiritual life, her contemplation on the Mercy of God led her to develop a childlike trust in God and deep love for her neighbor. In her years in the convent, St. Faustina heard a call from God to make God s mercy known to the world so that the world may more fully receive God s healing grace. St. Faustina promoted the Chaplet of Divine Mercy which consists of the recitation of prayers to the Eternal Father with the use of the rosary for the sake of Christ s sorrowful passion. Holy Redeemer Parish Spaghetti Dinner On Friday, April 13th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Holy Redeemer School will be hosting a Spaghetti Dinner Night in the Four Seasons Room. The cost is $5/person, and includes spaghetti, a side salad, garlic bread, dessert, and soft drinks. This event is open to EVERYONE. Please come and enjoy a fun, community night out! Quo Vadis Hiking Trip On Sunday, April 15th, all high school aged men who are interested in learning more about the priesthood are invited to go on a Quo Vadis hiking trip in Montgomery County. The day will include Mass, lunch, Eucharistic Adoration, dinner, and the opportunity to spend time with priests, seminarians, and other high school aged men who are open to the priesthood. Bus transportation is available from throughout the archdiocese. HRS Vegas Night & Silent Auction Please consider joining us for our annual Vegas Night and Silent Auction scheduled for Friday, April 27th at 7:00 p.m. This is an adult only event that is open to the public. Tickets will be available for purchase after all Saturday and Sunday masses, April 7th through 22nd. CASH RAFFLE In conjunction with the Vegas Night, the HSA Auction Committee has added a raffle to with cash prizes of $1,500, $1,000 and $500. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase after all Saturday and Sunday masses, April 7th through 22nd. All proceeds from the Vegas Night/Silent Auction and the cash raffle go towards enhancing our curriculum through guest authors, clubs, assemblies, field trips and the performing arts.
