2 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ BIDDING A FOND FAREWELL A change in plans is sending our Brother Michael Valdes to the Christian Brothers Residence at Iona Prep in New Rochelle (instead of to Bergen Catholic). Brother Michael has a special message for the parishioners of Saint Joseph and wishes to say... THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES My deepest gratitude for the years spent at Saint Joseph s. My life has been blessed by so many saintly people and enriched by your spiritual presence. Now I give thanks to God for your faith that has encouraged me. I give thanks to our God for you. I thank him for the joy we have had in his presence because of you. (1 Thess. 3-9) I want to complete my mission and finish the work that Jesus gave me to do, which is to declare the Good News about the grace of God. And now I know that none of you will ever see me again. (Acts 20:24-25) I remember you in my prayers and ask the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, to give you the Spirit, who will make you wise and reveal God to you, so that you will know him. 3 If you would like to do some reading this summer and are looking for possibilities, you may wish to consider: In the realm of Religion: Rodney Stark s Bearing False Witness: Debunking Centuries of Anti-Catholic History (Templeton Press, 2016). A distinguished scholar addresses charges often made against the Church (on the Crusades, the Inquisition, Galileo, Pius XII s actions in World War II, etc.) and shows that the reality can be surprisingly different from what most people think. Stark says, I am not a Roman Catholic, and I did not write this book in defense of the Church. I wrote it in defense of history. Russell Shaw s Catholics in America (Ignatius Press, 2016) examines many notables, among them St. Elizabeth Seton, Orestes Brownson, Al Smith, Dorothy Day and Flannery O Connor. Kenneth L. Woodward s Getting Religion: Faith, Culture, and Politics From the Age of Eisenhower to the Era of Obama (Convergent, 2016) explores how many of today s Americans reach adulthood by an autonomous path, little influenced by families, clergy, teachers and community organizations. Jamie Blosser s Positively Medieval: The Surprising Dynamic, Heroic Church of the Middle Ages (Our Sunday Visitor, 2016) acquaints readers with such important and vibrant figures as St. Clare, St. Thomas Becket, St. Joan of Arc and Charlemagne. Robert Ellsberg s Blessed Among Us: Day by Day With Saintly Witnesses (Liturgical Press, 2016) profiles two people each day of the year: saints and other significant believers. Aurora Griffin s How I Stayed Catholic at Harvard: 40 Tips for Faithful College Students (Ignatius Press, 2016) gives solid advice from a 2014 graduate who then went to Oxford as a Rhodes scholar and earned a degree in theology. Peter Kreeft says that the best way to keep [the Faith], at any college, is to read this book. Kevin Starr s Continental Ambitions: Roman Catholics in North America: The Colonial Experience (Ignatius Press, 2017) surveys the often underestimated or overlooked contributions Spanish, French and English Catholics made to the United States. Mike Aquilina s How the Choir Converted the World: Through Hymns, With Hymns, and In Hymns (Emmaus Road Publishing, 2017) shows us how early Church writers such as St. Ambrose and St. Ephrem used beautiful melodies and lyrics to make the Faith delightful to accept. Chaput s Strangers in a Strange Land: Living the Catholic Faith in a Post-Christian World (Henry Holt, 2017) discusses how today s American cultural context poses many difficult challenges to the Church. The author is the Archbishop of Philadelphia. Vicki Burbach s How to Read Your Way to Heaven (Sophia Institute Press, 2017) offers a plan for reading great Catholic books that can be reasonably completed within five years. Fiction SUMMER READING Robert Seethaler s A Whole Life (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2016) is a short novel about Andreas Egger, who spends eight years in a Soviet POW camp during and after World War I, then returns to the Austrian mountains, where, after the tragic death of his wife, he lives as a solitary pensioner, feeling like a remnant from some long buried time, a thorny weed still stretching up. Right before his death, at age 80, he uncharacteristically takes a trip on a postal bus to another mountain town not all that far away. Maribeth Boelts s A Bike Like Sergio s (Candlewick, 2016) is a children s book about Ruben, who wants a bicycle like the one his well-off friend has. When he picks up what turns out to be a $100 bill a lady dropped in a grocery store, he can now get his bike. Or can he? Ruben has to figure out his moral dilemma. Derek Walcott and Peter Doig s, Morning, Paramin (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2016) is a beautiful collaboration of the late Nobel laureate poet from St. Lucia and the highly regarded Scottish painter, now a resident of Trinidad. Vivek Shabhag s Ghachar Ghochar (Penguin, 2017) is a novella about an Indian family s rise from respectable poverty to business prosperity and the problems it brings. The title refers to an expression one of the character s wives uses when life gets caught in tangles. Tim Gautreaux s Signals (Knopf, 2017) is a collection of short stories, many of them on work, by one of America s most adept current-day writers. James Runcie s Sidney Chambers and the Dangers of Temptation (Bloomsbury, 2016) is a collection of mystery stories set in England of the s, and the basis for a British TV series seen here on PBS, in which the detective is an Anglican Priest. A colleague asks him at one point: If you are fighting evil, then you are taking steps to help the world become a better place. Take steps. The race is not always to the swift. Msgr. David Hubba

The purpose of the Hospitality/Welcome Ministry will be to identify an extended group of volunteers who will assist ushers in greeting parishioners at each weekend Mass, welcome newly registered parishioners and families, and also provide support for parish events alongside other parish ministries. 6 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ CATHOLIC WAR VETERANS CROSS OF PEACE FUNDRAISER TO HELP OUR VETERANS JUNE LOVE & RESPONSIBILITY: YOUNG ADULTS BUILDING HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS All young adults are invited to attend a life-changing four-week series based on St. John Paul II s Love and Responsibility. The talks and discussions will be grounded upon Edward Sri s Men, Women & The Mystery of Love. These evenings will shed light on the mysterious dynamics between men and women, and at the same time, challenge us to live out these relationships better. The series will conclude with a mass celebrated by Cardinal Tobin. Members of the Catholic War Veterans will be at the Masses on June for our Annual Cross of Peace Fundraiser to benefit veterans and the military services. Our members have been serving God's Church by their service to fellow veterans, the military, families and youth in our communities for over 65 years. This marks our 4th year at St. Joseph.
