2 First Sunday of advent December 2, 2018 Dear Friends, A Reflection Wish you all a grace filled Advent! In the modern world we live in, the Advent season may have just disappeared, because it has no commercial value. As a result, when we look around, we see a huge leap from Thanksgiving to Christmas without the Advent season. However, in the spiritual journey of a Christian, the season of Advent is very important. That is the reason; we have four weeks of Advent that ends on Christmas Eve, when we really begin the Christmas Season. Advent begins on Sunday that falls between November 27th and December 3rd each year The English word advent is borrowed from the Medieval Latin word adventus. It means arrival, appearance, or new beginnings. Therefore, we talk about the advent of an important event, invention, or situation with reference to the fact of it starting or coming into existence. Advent Season for all Christians is a time for new beginnings. It cannot be just a repeat of the past. It calls us to begin something radically new for our spiritual growth and for the welcoming of Christ. The wonderful news is that this weekend is the Church s version of Happy New Year. Advent marks the beginning of a new Liturgical year a perfect time to examine our conscience, our habits, our actions and our passions. Are they ordered toward God and a closer relationship to Jesus? If not now might be the time to make a set of Advent Resolutions to get back on track. Advent resolutions for the new liturgical year instead of the traditional January resolutions that would be something new. Wising you all a blessed Advent, Fr. 4 Faith Formation Corner T R E A S U R E S F R O M O U R TRADITION Occasionally, someone raises a surprised complaint that while Christmas arrives on Santa s sleigh at the Macy s parade on Thanksgiving Day, the Church doesn t catch on too fast. They may even say that Advent is a new-fangled idea. Not so. To trace its beginnings, we have to go back to the fourth or fifth century in France (then Gaul), when Epiphany was the favored day, next to Easter, for baptism. The old pagan structures of Rome were collapsing then, and many people sought to be baptized. Since adults always prepared for baptism by fasting, folks counted back a few weeks for a kind of retreat. Before too long, bishops were advising everyone to attend church frequently beginning on December 17. Soon, artists were imagining ways of expressing the Advent mystery, and in Italy this gave rise to beautiful mosaics of empty thrones awaiting the arrival of the Lord of all creation. Advent as we know it develops on two separate tracks: the first having to do with our spiritual preparation for celebrating the Christmas feast, and the second having to do with the way this is organized and expressed in the liturgical readings and prayers every day of the season. --James Field VILLAGE HOUSE UPDATE! Our rotating interfaith shelter for medically-fragile women will be hosted right in our neighborhood, from Nov 7-Dec 5 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, and Dec 5- Jan 2 at St. Pauls. Both congregations are quite small, so while they are so generous to share their space, they need our help as volunteers. As such, St. Martin of Tours has committed to fill all of the volunteer positions (at a minimum!) on Nov 29, Dec 8, Dec 17, and Dec 26. Please consult your heart and your calendar and help fill in all of the dates at and select St. Mark's or St. Paul's. Thank you for your support! RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Have you ever considered becoming Catholic? If so, RCIA Inquiry continues! On December 6 th we ll be discussing the Church as Community and Eschatology Last Things. RCIA inquiry provides a safe space with others that are exploring whether the Catholic Church may be a place to call home? We meet weekly in the Parish Office and all are welcome!
