8 The Spread of Christianity In the west, no single empire arose in Rome. Germanic groups established many small kingdoms. In the late 500s, a group of monks led by Augustine of Canterbury arrived in an area called Kent Many people were converted and Christianity spread throughout England

9 The Spread of Christianity The Franks were a powerful Germanic kingdom (present day France) Their leader, Clovis, promised to become Christian if his troops won a particular battle Franks became a major power in Western Europe

10 The Power of the Church The church and state had a very close connection Authority was based on the Church For example, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne (a Frank) as emperor The church used excommunication and interdict to control the kings They also created a system called canon law to regulate people s conduct

11 Why Christianity? During the Middle Ages, life was very difficult The church provided stability and security in times of frequent wars Shared belief in the church bonds the people of Medieval Europe together The Middle Ages are seen as the Age of Faith

12 Turn and Talk Why might the church remain a powerful institution even though Western Rome fell? ANS: The church held power over kings with the threat of excommunication and provided a bond for the people of medieval England due to shared beliefs.

14 Christianity in the Byzantine Empire Constantine, a Roman emperor, moved the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire to Byzantium and created a new center for Christian authority

15 Christianity in the Byzantine Empire The political division of Rome, along with cultural and language differences leads to a split in the church The result of the split is two separate branches of Christianity: Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy.

17 Christianity in the Byzantine Empire Justinian, a Byzantine emperor, constructed the Hagia Sophia to show the close relationship between the church and state. Cyril and Methodius create a new alphabet, called the Cyrillic language, to promote religion the Slavs (a group of people living in the Byzantine Empire).
